Assalamou alaykoum wa rahamatou Allahi wa barakatouh dear fellow translators,
I usually translate by word. One client wants to pay me by pages.
My question is : There are how much words in a normal Arabic page?
I usually translate fatwa, Islamic jurisprudence, stories of the Prophet (SAWS) and the Companions, ect.
I translate from Arabic into French and from English into French.

There is the same number of words in an Arabic page than in an English one?
I am surprise about it because the letters are a lot smaller.

For Arabic source texts to be translate into another language, how much do you receive per page?
I use to be pay per words, so I am confuse...
Should i reject that offer and ask to be pay by words instead?

As-salamu 'alaykum, Oum Ayoub,
I think the only thing you can really do is ask to see a sample of the work and determine the average number of words per page, as it may vary from one text to another. Also, some clients may try to squeeze more words into a page to make things cheaper. Personally, I have seen pages ranging anywhere from 250 to 700 words.

I cannot count the words, we cannot do it for PDF documents, but it was very dense.
For sure, more than 250 words.
That is why I asked for advice here.

If I calculate the middle between 250 words and 700 words, the middle is 475 words, I think.
In the link sent to me, the two pages given as example were 400 and 500 words, so the middle is 450 words.
Can we say that 450 words would be an average for Arabic pages ?
This is almost double than English...
They offer me to pay the equivalent of 250 words per pages, I think it is underestimated.

If you don't have a converter use any free website online. If the source file is a scan, use OCR.

Oum Ayoub, If you found that the average was 450 words for the text you were provided with, you should state this to the client. It would not be fair for the client to treat the pages as standard pages of 250 words in this case.

Be honest with your client and explain to him all this dilemma. Stick to your mentioned average and be fair to yourself.
If this work is meant to be yours, you will surely take it. If not, so thank Allah the Almighty for all his doings.
