Pow-wow in Santiago
The third Santiago pow-wow took place in August, and in spite of the fact that it�s still winter in this part of the world, we were fortunate enough to have a sunny and unseasonably-warm day. We met at Ricardo Mart�nez and Judy Rojas� house, which was more than spacious enough for our purposes, and we enjoyed a delicious meal of what Ricardo, our host and chef, called �Peruvian-style Chinese food�.
About half of the 16 attendees already knew each other, many from previous pow-wows, and so there was no need for formal introductions or activities � the conversation was as varied as it was spontaneous. Who ever said that translators are solitary creatures that don�t know how to socialize? To give you an idea of the atmosphere, just consider that two of the participants came in from out-of-town just for the pow-wow, and that the last of us left at 8 pm � seven hours after things got underway.
It turned out that almost all of us are guest members of ProZ, and this led us to wonder if it�s worthwhile to pay to become platinum members. As our host happened to be one, he answered by pointing out that in 2001 he invoiced US$50,000 from ProZ jobs. This, of course, made many of us start thinking about spending the US$120 that it costs to upgrade.
We also talked about the translation market, rates, whether or not Chile is in an economic crisis, the precarious situation of neighboring countries, and globalization in general. Some of our colleagues expressed their desire to create a truly active professional association for translators that could look after our interests and help ensure the quality of the translations provided to clients. This is due to the fact that although in some other countries it would be unthinkable, in Chile translation is not a regulated profession. As at previous pow-wows, we also spoke of CAT tools such as D�j� vu and Trados, sharing our experiences regarding their usefulness, costs and benefits.
Special mention should be made of the fabulous lunch we were treated to, which was replete with different Chinese dishes prepared by our host, with some help from his Peruvian maid. Thanks, Ricardo, for the abundant and delicious delicacies, your generosity in picking up the tab, and that special world-class chef touch that you dazzled us with. While waiting for everyone to arrive, we munched on spring rolls and the various beverages people brought with them. All the dishes were well-received (which is a polite way of saying that we cleaned our plates, as well as the pans and trays the food was served in), though judging from the spontaneous tableside comments, the �chaufa� rice was the all-around favorite, with shrimp and other ingredients only to be found in specialty stores.
As always, we were left wanting more (not that we left hungry, mind you!) and wanting to get together again, and so we decided that November would be a good time for our next meeting. With Chile�s independence day celebrations coming up, Christmas and New Year�s will be here in no time at all, so before we know it we�ll be at the next pow-wow. See you soon!

Powwow en Santiago
El tercer powwow chileno se desarroll� con una importante cuota de suerte, porque, aunque el ocho de agosto es pleno invierno en este lado del mundo, el d�a estuvo soleado y la temperatura fue bastante agradable. Por esa raz�n, la casa de los anfitriones, Ricardo Mart�nez y Judy Rojas, result� ser muy adecuada para la ocasi�n, con un patio inmenso que aprovechamos al m�ximo mientras disfrut�bamos de una deliciosa comida china �a la peruana�, como aclar� en su momento el anfitri�n y chef.
M�s o menos la mitad de los 16 asistentes ya se conoc�a de los dos encuentros anteriores o por razones personales. Tal vez por esa familiaridad, no se sigui� ninguna pauta tem�tica predeterminada y los t�picos fueron variados y espont�neos, en especial por la locuacidad de todos los comensales� �Qui�n dijo que los traductores trabajamos muy en solitario y no sabemos socializar? Para que tengan una idea de c�mo estuvo el ambiente, algunos datos muy reveladores: dos personas viajaron desde sus respectivas ciudades s�lo para la ocasi�n, los �ltimos participantes se retiraron alrededor de las 20 horas y eso que la reuni�n parti� en forma puntual, a la una de la tarde�
En nuestros di�logos descubrimos que casi todos los presentes participan en ProZ con Guest member status, lo cual nos llev� a un tema que provoc� gran inter�s: �es rentable ser Platinum member?. Como el anfitri�n es un Platinum member, el mismo tom� la iniciativa para contestar y contarnos que en el a�o 2001 factur� USD $ 50.000 por trabajos generados en ProZ. Como es l�gico, esa respuesta dej� a muchos d�ndole vueltas a la idea de desembolsar los 120 d�lares que cuesta el upgrade.
Tambi�n hablamos de c�mo anda el mercado en estos d�as, de cu�nto cobrar, de si hay o no crisis en el pa�s y de c�mo nos afecta, en particular, la an�mica situaci�n econ�mica de los pa�ses vecinos y, en general, la globalizaci�n. Algunos colegas plantearon su deseo de crear un Colegio de Traductores en verdad activo, que pueda velar por los intereses de los traductores y por la calidad del trabajo que se ofrece a los clientes, pues, aunque en otros lugares parezca incre�ble, en Chile la traducci�n no es una profesi�n regulada. Adem�s, al igual que en las ocasiones anteriores, hab�a un gran inter�s por saber m�s acerca de programas como Trados o D�j� Vu, de la utilidad que prestan al traductor y de la relaci�n costo-beneficio.
Menci�n aparte merece el almuerzo en s�, que fue todo un acontecimiento, con comida china preparada por las manos del anfitri�n, con algo de ayuda de su nana peruana. Gracias, Ricardo, por los abundantes y deliciosos platillos, por tu generosidad al costear los gastos y por ese toque de chef internacional con que fuimos atendidos. Mientras iban llegando los asistentes, disfrutamos de un picadillo con arrollados primavera y de las distintas bebidas aportadas por los invitados. Todas las preparaciones tuvieron gran aceptaci�n (un eufemismo para decir que dejamos las fuentes y bandejas vac�as), pero por los comentarios espont�neos, el gran favorito fue el arroz chaufa, el cual ten�a camarones y todos los ingredientes que s�lo ofrecen las tiendas especializadas.
Como siempre, nos quedamos con la sensaci�n de gusto a poco (�no por falta de comida!) y con muchas ganas de volver a reunirnos. De hecho, quedamos de acuerdo en que noviembre ser�a una buena fecha. Ahora bien, ya se aproximan las celebraciones de nuestra independencia nacional y parece que despu�s cada 18 de septiembre, la Navidad y las fiestas de fin de a�o llegan de golpe, como si fueran a la semana siguiente. Entonces, como el tiempo vuela, creo que nos veremos �en unos pocos d�as�.
