Source text - English “Example is not the main thing in life—it is the only thing.” Through that sentence, the famous medical missionary and author, Albert Schweitzer, stated clearly the importance and power of example. How many of us reading this, have been influenced by the powerful life of some pastor, elder or other Christian that we saw early in our lives. If I mention “a faithful pastor,” whose image crops up in your mind? If I mention “a faithful Christian,” who do you think of?
Schweitzer’s statement is an overstatement, of course. Many other things are involved in a faithful life, but they themselves are all combined into the example someone sets.
“Mentoring” and “formation” may sound like new concepts, but they’re not. It seems from the very way God has created us this has been in His mind. He made humans in His image. We are to follow His example, and to imitate His character. In the incarnation of Christ, God came in the flesh in a way that we could understand and relate to Him, and, as Peter said, “leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps,” (I Peter 2:21).
We also get to participate in this ministry of setting and following examples. God has created humans to be born and to mature in the company of other humans in the family. We are not self-generated, nor do we instantly appear as mature people. God planned for loving parents to be part of the way humans would grow.
This is also the way God has intended to make Himself known in this fallen world. In the Old Testament God called forth Abraham and his descendants to be a holy, special, distinct people in the world. They were to be special so that the world would have a picture of a society which mirrored the character of God—embodying His concerns and values. When God told His people in Leviticus 19 that they were to “Be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy,” He was not speaking merely to an individual, to Moses or Aaron or Joshua. He was certainly speaking to them, but we see in Lev. 19:1 that God specifically instructed Moses to say this to the entire assembly of Israel. The laws which He then gave them had much to do with relationships, equity, justice and social interactions. He demonstrates that as these people cared for each other—for the lost and the least, for the stranger and the young—they would show something of the character of their just and merciful Creator.
Israel’s failure in this modelling ministry to others is one of God’s chief charges against the nation in the Old Testament. So in Ezekiel 5, Israel’s role becomes one of instructing the nations by negative example. The LORD says to Israel, “This is Jerusalem, which I have set in the center of the nations, with countries all around her. . . . I will make you a ruin and a reproach among the nations around you, in the sight of all who pass by. You will be a reproach and a taunt, a warning and an object of horror to the nations around you when I inflict punishment on you in anger and in wrath and with stinging rebuke. I the Lord have spoken,” (5:5, 14-15). Again and again in Ezekiel, God says that He does what He does to the nation of Israel for His own name’s sake, that is, for the truth about Him to be known among the peoples of the world.
This corporate witness to Himself is what God has also intended through the church in the New Testament. In John 13, Jesus said that the world was to know that we are His disciples by the Christ-like love that we have for one another. Paul wrote to the Ephesian church, “you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light,” (Eph. 5:8).
In our lives as Christians, individually, and in multiplied effect in our lives together as churches, we hold out God’s light of hope in this dark and despairing world. By our lives as Christians we are teaching each other, and the surrounding world about God. If we love each other, we show something of what it is like to love God. And, on the other hand “anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen,” (I John 4:20). In our holiness, we show the holiness of God. We are called to give people hope that there is another way of living, than the lives of selfish frustration that our fallen natures and the world around conspire to encourage us to follow.
Fellow pastors and elders, what are our churches teaching the watching world about God? Are we teaching them that God is limited to our race? Are we teaching them that He tolerates sin and unfaithfulness, self-absorbed lives of pettiness and quarrelling? How seriously have we led our people to take the great task and privilege that we have of being the public showcase, the store-window, the advertisement for, the web-page of God’s character to His Creation?
What a tremendous privilege He has given us, and how little we seem to consider it. We think that if we get more people in our church, that somehow negates our responsibility to those who are already named as members. But what testimony is every one of those providing right now? How many of their bad witnesses must you labor to overcome in order for people to see the good witness that God is providing through those who are truly converted, and are showing it.
The whole exercise of church discipline is not finally about vindication or vengence. Those are matters for God, not forgiven sinners like ourselves (Deuteronomy 32:35; Romans 12:19)! But we do have a concern to present a good witness to others of what God is like. We are to be exemplary in our lives and conduct. Have you noticed that in his pastoral epistles, Paul seems particularly concerned about the reputation that an elder would have with those outside the church? While there may be a number of reasons for this, one must certainly be the elder’s representative role of the church to the world. This, then, is also what the church as a whole is to be like. That is why Paul was so enraged in I Corinthians 5. And have you noticed exactly who Paul yells at? He didn’t scold the man who was in the sinful sexual liason; rather he sharply rebuked the church which would tolerate such sin among it’s members! We know the sad truth that some of our number will show themselves to be lost in sin, even though they’ve made a good profession at first. We trust that at least some of them will live to repent and come back. But we do not ever expect the church corporately to default on its responsibility to well-represent God by standing for holiness and against sin. It was this issue—very much like the sin of idolatrous Israel in the Old Testament—that was the focus of Paul’s sharp rebuke of the Corinthian church.
Friends, what would the apostle Paul say of your church and mine? How much non-attendance do we tolerate in the name of love? How many adulterous relationships or unbiblical divorces do we allow to pass uncommented on in our churches, yet that scream out to the world, saying “we are no different than they are”? How many divisive people do we allow to rend the church over tiny issues, or how many false gospels do we allow to be taught?
Dear brothers, if you are reading this as a pastor, an elder, a leader, teacher or fellow-member in a church, think of the great responsibility that we have. Consider how we can bear witness to God best—is it by ignoring sin in our midst, or by working to restore gently those who are caught in sin, as Paul instructs in Galatians 6:1? Which better reflects the God we worship? Does God’s mercy ever obscure His holiness in His word? What about in His church? What is our stewardship in this matter?
Give heed to what example you set for the world around you. God has a great plan for His people and for His world; He calls us to show that by our words and our lives. Are you doing that? May God help each one of us to be faithful in this great calling.
Translation - Italian “L’esempio non è la cosa principale nella vita - è l’unica cosa.” Con questa frase il famoso medico missionario e autore Albert Schweitzer ha espresso chiaramente l’importanza e il potere dell’esempio. Quanti di noi che stanno leggendo questo sono stati influenzati dall’intensa vita di qualche parroco, anziano o altro Cristiano che abbiamo conosciuto in precedenza nelle nostre vite. Se accenno a “un pastore fedele” l’immagine di chi si presenta alla vostra mente? E se cito “un Cristiano fedele” a chi pensate?
L’affermazione di Schweitzer è sicuramente un’esagerazione. Ci sono tante altre cose che una vita di fede comporta, le quali confluiscono nell’esempio che qualcuno dà.
“Affiancamento” e “formazione” potrebbero suonare come concetti nuovi ma non lo sono. Proprio dal modo in cui Dio ci ha creato sembra che questo fosse già nella Sua mente. Fece gli uomini a Sua immagine. Noi dobbiamo seguire il Suo esempio e imitare il Suo personaggio. Nell’incarnazione di Cristo, Dio si fece carne in modo che noi potessimo capirlo e rapportaci a Lui e, come disse Pietro: “ lasciandovi un esempio, onde seguiate le Sue orme”, (Pietro 1,2-21).
Anche noi partecipiamo al ministero del dare e seguire gli esempi. Dio ha creato gli esseri umani per nascere e maturare in compagnia di altri esseri umani in famiglia. Noi non siamo auto-generati e neppure appaiamo immediatamente come persone mature. Dio ha progettato che i genitori amorevoli siano parte del cammino di crescita degli esseri umani.
Questo è anche il modo in cui Dio ha voluto farsi conoscere in questo mondo effimero. Nel Vecchio Testamento Dio fece nascere Abramo e i suoi discendenti perché fossero un popolo sacro, speciale e distinto nel mondo. Essi dovevano essere speciali così che il mondo avrebbe avuto il disegno di una società che rispecchiasse il personaggio di Dio – incarnando i Suoi interessi e valori. Quando Dio disse al Suo popolo nel Levitico19 che loro dovevano “ Siate santi, perché io, l’Eterno,Iddio vostro, sono santo”, Lui non stava parlando semplicemente ad un individuo solo come Mosè, Aronne o Giosuè. Egli stava sicuramente parlando a loro, ma vediamo nel Levitico 19,1 che Dio ordinò precisamente a Mosè di dire tutto ciò all’intera assemblea d’Israele. Le leggi che Egli diede loro riguardavano molto le relazioni, l’uguaglianza, la giustizia e le interazioni sociali. Egli voleva dimostrare che, avendo cura gli uni degli altri - per il perduto e l’ultimo, per lo straniero e il giovane – queste genti avrebbero mostrato qualcosa del carattere del loro giusto e misericordioso Creatore.
Il fallimento di Israele nell’espletare questo magistero di esempio agli altri popoli è una delle accuse principali di Dio contro la nazione nell’Antico Testamento. Quindi in Ezechiele 5, il ruolo di Israele diventa quello di colei che istruisce le nazioni dando un cattivo esempio. Il Signore dice a Israele: “Ecco Gerusalemme!Io l’avevo posta in mezzo alle nazioni e agli altri paesi che la circondavano … E farò di te, sotto gli occhi di tutti i passanti, una desolazione, il vituperio delle nazioni che ti circondano. E il tuo obbrobrio e la tua ignominia saranno un ammaestramento e un oggetto di stupore per le nazioni che ti circondano, quand’io avrò eseguito su di te i miei giudizi con ira, con furore, con indignati castighi son io l’Eterno, che parlo” (5:5,14-15). Più volte in Ezechiele Dio asserisce che Egli fa ciò che fa alla nazione di Israele per salvare il Suo nome, ossia perché la verità su di Lui sia conosciuta tra le genti di tutto il mondo.
Questa comune testimonianza a Se stesso è ciò che Dio ha anche voluto dire attraverso la chiesa nel Nuovo Testamento. In Giovanni 13, Gesù disse che il mondo doveva sapere che noi siamo i Suoi discepoli attraverso l’amore cristiano che abbiamo gli uni per gli altri. Paolo scrisse alla chiesa Efesina: ” perché già eravate tenebre, ma ora siete luce nel Signore. Conducetevi come figliuoli di luce.”( Efesini 5:8).
Nelle nostre vite come Cristiani, singolarmente, e in effetto multiplo nelle nostre vite insieme come chiese, noi porgiamo la luce della speranza di Dio in questo duro e disperato mondo. Dalle nostre vite come Cristiani noi stiamo insegnando Dio a noi stessi e al mondo circostante . Se noi ci amiamo gli uni con gli altri mostriamo cosa vuol dire amare Dio. E, d’altra parte: ” chi non ama il suo fratello che ha veduto, non può amar Dio che non ha veduto.” ( Giovanni 1, 4-20). Nella nostra santità, noi mostriamo la santità di Dio. Noi siamo chiamati a dare alla gente speranza che esista un modo di vivere diverso dalle vite di frustrazione egoistica che le nostre nature decidue e il mondo intorno cospirano per incoraggiarci a seguire.
Membri preti e anziani, che cosa stanno insegnando le nostre chiese riguardo a Dio al mondo che osserva? Gli stiamo insegnando che Dio è limitato alla nostra razza? Gli stiamo insegnando che Egli tollera il peccato e l’infedeltà, vite egocentriche di meschinerie e litigi. Quanto seriamente abbiamo guidato il nostro popolo a prendersi il grande compito e privilegio che abbiamo di essere la bacheca pubblica, la vetrina, la pubblicità, la pagina web del personaggio di Dio a Sua Creazione?
Che fantastico privilegio che Lui ci ha dato e quanto poco sembriamo apprezzarlo. Noi pensiamo che avere più persone nella nostra chiesa neghi in qualche modo la nostra responsabilità nei riguardi di chi è già nominato come membro. Ma che testimonianza sta dando adesso ognuno di loro? Quante delle loro cattive testimonianze bisogna sforzarsi di sconfiggere cosicché la gente veda la buona testimonianza che Dio ci sta dando attraverso coloro i quali sono davvero convertiti e lo stanno dimostrando.
L’intero esercizio della disciplina ecclesiastica non riguarda infine giustificazione e vendetta. Quelli sono problemi di Dio, non di peccatori perdonati come noi (Deuteronomio 32,25; Romani 12,19)! Noi però abbiamo l’interesse di presentare una buona testimonianza agli altri di cosa sia Dio. Noi dobbiamo essere di esempio nelle nostre vite e condotte. Avete notato che nelle sue epistole pastorali Paolo sembra particolarmente preoccupato per la reputazione che un anziano avrebbe con quelli all’infuori dalla chiesa? Sebbene possano esserci svariate ragioni per questo, una deve sicuramente essere il ruolo rappresentativo dell’anziano della chiesa nel mondo. Questo dunque è anche ciò che la chiesa come insieme deve essere. Ecco perché Paolo era così incollerito in Corinzi 1,5. E avete notato a chi sta urlando esattamente Paolo? Egli non rimproverò l’uomo che era in un legame sessuale peccaminoso; egli piuttosto criticò severamente la chiesa che tollerava tali peccati tra i suoi membri! Noi conosciamo la triste verità che alcuni dei nostri numeri si mostreranno perduti nel peccato, anche se all’inizio hanno svolto una buona professione. Speriamo che ameno alcuni di loro vivranno per pentirsi e ritornare. Non possiamo però aspettarci che la Chiesa come collettività non paghi le sue responsabilità di rappresentare autenticamente Dio stando dalla parte della santità e contro il peccato. Questo era il problema – simile al peccato dell’Israele idolatra nel Vecchio Testamento- sul quale si focalizzava la critica severa di Paolo alla chiesa Corinzia.
Amici, cosa direbbe l’apostolo Paolo della vostra e della mia chiesa? Quanta non-presenza tolleriamo nel nome di Dio? Quante relazioni adultere o divorzi antiscritturali permettiamo che passino inosservati nelle nostre chiese, che ancora urlano al mondo dicendo “noi non siamo diversi da loro”? A quante persone che creano divisioni permettiamo di lacerare la chiesa su piccole questioni, o quanti falsi vangeli permettiamo che vengano insegnati?
Cari fratelli, se state leggendo quest’articolo come parroci, anziani, guide, insegnanti o membri di una chiesa, pensate alla grande responsabilità che noi abbiamo. Considerate come possiamo meglio portare la testimonianza di Dio- ignorando il peccato tra di noi, o lavorando per ripristinare delicatamente coloro i quali sono colti nel peccato, come ci insegna Paolo in Galati 6:1? Quale riflette al meglio il Dio che noi adoriamo? La misericordia di Dio si oscura mai nella Sua santità e nel Suo mondo? E nella Sua chiesa? Qual è la nostra tutela al riguardo?
Tenete conto dell’esempio che date al mondo intorno a voi. Dio ha un piano grande per la Sua gente e il Suo mondo; Egli ci chiama a dimostrarlo con le nostre parole e le nostre vite. Voi lo state facendo? Possa Dio aiutare ognuno di noi a essere fedele a questa grande chiamata.

della National Gallery
Alberto Cottignoli Raffaello o una brutta copia zeppa di errori anatomici?

Nell’estate 2010 la National Gallery di Londra allestiva una
mostra di 40 “falsi” acquistati a suo tempo e oggi riconosciuti
come tali. Il suo attuale direttore, Nicholas Penny, presentava
nella medesima mostra una copia della “Madonna dei
Garofani” attribuita a Raffaello Sanzio, allo scopo di dimostrare
che l’opera, a differenza della altre, era autentica e quindi da assegnare
senza alcun dubbio al pittore di Urbino. La mostra aveva
un chiaro senso polemico nei confronti dello storico dell’arte
James H. Beck, massimo esperto di arte del Rinascimento italiano
e già professore di questa materia alla Columbia University
di New York, che aveva sostenuto il contrario in un suo saggio
uscito postumo (in italiano: Da Duccio a Raffaello. La pratica di
attribuzione allo sbando, Padova, Editoriale Programma, 2010).
Nicholas Penny, quando non era ancora direttore della Galleria,
era stato il massimo sostenitore dell’acquisto dell’opera e
si faceva forte del consenso (ma sarebbe più corretto dire del
silenzio assenso, almeno in massima parte) offerto da una trentina
di esperti selezionati tra i maggiori rappresentanti della Storia
dell’Arte a livello mondiale. A questi Beck opponeva non solo
la sua profonda conoscenza del presunto autore ma anche un’osservazione
di fondo: ammesso che qualunque artista possa avere
alti e bassi, può egli dimenticare o trascurare estemporaneamente
le regole e le conoscenze che fanno parte della sua
esperienza di base?
Devo ricordare che Beck aveva esordito come pittore e ragionava
anche per consapevolezza diretta. Qui cercherò di approfondire
il tema e, avvalendomi appunto della mia personale
attività di pittore, verificherò la correttezza di quanto sostenuto
dal direttore Nicholas Penny nonché dagli esperti da lui consultati.
Il fatto è rilevante dal momento che lo squallido dipinto
(di questo si tratta e lo dimostreremo) è stato poi effettivamente
acquistato dalla National Gallery per l’impressionante
cifra di 65 milioni di dollari, il più alto prezzo mai pagato al mondo
per centimetro quadro (la tavola misura 28,8 per 22,9 cm:
approssimativamente come un formato di carta A4). Scrive dunque
Beck riferendosi alla Northumberland Madonna della National
Gallery, che è appunto una delle 55 copie a noi note della
“Madonna dei Garofani”:
“...per rendere credibile l’attribuzione, si dovrà partire dalla dimostrazione
che la Northumberland Madonna prevale per concezione
ed esecuzione su tutte le altre...”
Aggiungerò per maggiore precisione che, se la Madonna di Londra
è l’originale, qualsiasi immagine a essa associabile deve derivare
da quella o da una copia o incisione di quella e quindi, come
asserisce Beck, nessuna di tali copie potrà essere presumibilmente
superiore al modello, visto che questo sarebbe opera di uno dei
massimi artisti del panorama mondiale di tutti i tempi, mentre
è risaputo che le copie venivano quasi sempre prodotte da mestieranti
spesso privi di cognizioni pittoriche.
Vero è altresì che Raffaello possedeva conoscenze anatomiche
perfette e una capacità di applicarle ai suoi dipinti assolutamente
insuperabile o, se mai, solamente eguagliabile. In particolare
– e vedremo perché – sottolineo che tutti i dipinti prodotti da
Raffaello (quelli sulla cui paternità non esistono dubbi) mostrano
una capacità ed una delicatezza nel trattare mani e piedi che potremmo
definire più “divina” che umana. Aggiungo infine che,
almeno fino allo scorcio dell’Ottocento, mani e piedi dipinti rappresentavano
non solo la base delle analisi degli intenditori per
stabilire l’abilità del pittore ma anche lo strumento critico fondamentale
per riconoscerlo.
Che cosa accadrebbe se fosse dimostrabile che l’esemplare della
“Madonna dei Garofani” di Londra, attribuito a Raffaello, è
zeppo di errori anatomici, soprattutto riguardo a mani e piedi
(tutti, da quelli del Bambino a quelli della Vergine) ed esistesse
invece almeno un’altra copia (tra le cinquantacinque note)
in cui tali errori assolutamente non esistono?
Semplicissimo: questa sarebbe la prova assoluta e non controvertibile
che il dipinto della National Gallery non è opera di
Raffaello e che trattasi anche di opera di scadentissima qualità,
priva perfino di valore commerciale (non superiore agli 8-
9.000 dollari, volendone accettare l’antichità, oppure tendente
a “0” nel caso fosse dimostrata l’ipotesi di Beck che ne individua
il probabile esecutore nel giro di Vincenzo Camuccini e la
data a inizio ’800).
Bene: noi possiamo arrivare ancora più in là e non solo dimostreremo
che la “Madonna dei Garofani” è zeppa di errori anatomici
grossolani (non c’è parte del corpo visibile dei due personaggi
che si salvi) ma daremo la prova dell’esistenza di questi
errori anche a chi di anatomia pittorica non ha conoscenze, in
quanto mostreremo come esista una copia nella quale tutti, dico
tutti questi errori (almeno 20) sono completamente assenti.
A questo punto di nuovo ci chiediamo: sarà possibile che Raffello
commetta un’infinità di gravi errori anatomici e che un copista
sia in grado di correggerli tutti?
Saremmo alla follia. Perciò, se quanto premesso fosse vero, la
Madonna della National Gallery non sarebbe che una volgare
copia mal fatta e la copia utilizzata per smascherarla sarebbe semplicemente
una copia ben fatta dell’originale andato perduto oppure,
tutt’al più, spetterebbe a quest’ultima il titolo di originale
(ed è, infatti, infinitamente più bella, tanto da essere l’unica
copia attribuita ad un pittore degno di tal nome e cioè al Sassoferrato):
non certo all’infelice dipinto della National Gallery.
Ma passiamo alla dimostrazione e precisiamo anzitutto a quale
altra copia facciamo riferimento per smascherare gli orrori
(perché di “orrori” si tratta) del dipinto della National Gallery:
trattasi della “Madonna dei Garofani” in possesso dell’Institute
of Arts di Detroit. A nessun altro dipinto faremo riferimento
– non ne esiste la necessità logica – e ogni comparazione atta
a risolvere il caso verrà fatta solo tra Detroit e Londra.
Gli errori presenti nella copia della National Gallery

1) Un primo errore colossale lo rinveniamo nella mano sinistra
di Maria (fig. A, partic. 1): pur essendo le ultime due falangi
delle dita non piegate quasi per nulla e quindi essendo le
loro dimensioni prive di falsature prospettiche, l’ultima falange
del medio e dell’anulare sono lunghe come la seconda
falange mentre nella realtà l’ultima falange è estremamente
più corta della seconda. Basterebbe questo ad escludere
la paternità di Raffaello, divino pittore di qualsivoglia
posizione delle mani (e questa tra l’altro è una posizione molto
facile da dipingere). Normalmente in questa posizione, cioè
con la seconda falange perfettamente estesa, la terza falange
tende naturalmente a piegarsi verso il palmo della mano
e quindi ad assumere dimensioni quasi nulle dal punto di vista
prospettico: altro che dimensioni identiche!
2) Incredibile è poi la lunghezza di tutte le dita della mano sinistra
di Maria (fig. A, partic. 2): la parte di dita che vediamo rappresenterebbe
già di per sé la lunghezza giusta per le intere
dita, tuttavia nel dipinto manca invece un’intera falange (la prima),
nascosta dalla prospettiva! Ho provveduto, dopo aver ingrandito
il particolare della mano, a ricostruire le reali dimensioni
delle dita, aggiungendo la falange mancante ed il risultato
che si può vedere è raccapricciante (fig. C): le dita rischiano
di essere lunghe il doppio di come dovrebbero.

3) Di nuovo assurda è la posizione dell’indice. In questa postura
il punto di attacco dell’indice alla mano (fig. A partic. 3) è di
poco più avanzato dell’articolazione del pollice per cui la prima
falange dovrebbe essere, per arrivare in quel punto, di
lunghezza quasi doppia del naturale.
Riassumendo, chi dipinse questa mano non solo non possedeva
nessuna conoscenza dei rapporti strutturali e dimensionali delle
mani, ma nemmeno delle posture delle stesse. Trattasi chiaramente
di persona incapace che malamente copiò la mano del
modello originale (o comunque di quello che stava seguendo).
Per dimostrare la mal copiatura vediamo invece chi ha copiato
bene, andando al dipinto di Detroit:

1) qui le ultime falangi di medio ed anulare risultano delle dimensioni
esatte (fig. B) in quanto le seconde falangi sono
quasi perpendicolari al piano del quadro e quindi enormemente
ridotte nelle dimensioni.
2) la lunghezza delle dita, come si può vedere dal mio disegno
ricostruttivo (fig. D), risulta in questo caso, anatomicamente
perfetta.

3) l’attaccatura dell’indice è anch’essa, in questo caso, anatomicamente
perfetta (fig. B).
Basta in ogni caso uno sguardo anche superficiale
per rendersi conto che dimensioni e postura
della mano sinistra di Londra sono sbagliate
mentre quelle della mano di Detroit
sono esatte. In più: volendo ricreare la postura
della mano sinistra di Maria nella realtà (non
è possibile, ma immaginiamo di poterlo fare),
l’unico modo per far sì che le ultime due falangi
di medio, anulare e mignolo rimangano stese
e senza alterazioni prospettiche come nel quadro
di Londra, è quello di poggiare le punte delle
dita sulla parte più rigonfia del palmo più vicina
al polso. Bene, se noi facciamo una cosa
del genere (a parte che otteniamo una postura
che solo un malformato può utilizzare per
stringere qualcosa, come Maria sta facendo), ci
accorgiamo che la punta del nostro pollice fuoriesce
(e non di poco) dalle nocche che uniscono
le seconde falangi alle prime (fuoriesce cioè dal
pugno chiuso) mentre nel dipinto la punta del
pollice è addirittura non fuori dal pugno, come
dovrebbe essere, ma in prossimità del centro
di quello (fig. A, part. 4).
Proviamo adesso a immaginare di fare lo stesso con la Madonna di Detroit: tiriamole cioè le punte di medio,anulare e mignolo sul rigonfiamento del palmo (fig. B), cioè più
a sinistra di dove si trovano, e ci rendiamo conto immediatamente
che la punta del pollice fuoriesce, come anatomia vuole,
dal pugno che così si è conformato.
Ancora non basta. Infatti incontriamo un tipico errore da copista.
La mano sinistra di Maria esce in modo anomalo dalla figura
del Bambino: sfido infatti qualsiasi pittore a ricostruire il
congiungimento di questa mano alla spalla. Essa è troppo avanzata
e troppo rettilinea e, per operare il congiungimento, occorrerebbero
un avambraccio oppure un braccio erroneamente
allungati o in posture assurdamente contorte. A capire
questo poco ci aiuta il dipinto di Detroit, che comunque palesa
un errore molto meno evidente. Dobbiamo perciò andare alla
Madonna Benois di Leonardo (cui sicuramente Raffaello fece
riferimento, fig. E), dove la mano è collocata in posizione giustamente
più arretrata e dove il pollice scorre inequivocabilmente
verso il basso, rendendo così la mano perfettamente ricollegabile
alla spalla da un punto di vista anatomico.

Notiamo altresì che la mano di Leonardo sottende perfettamente
a una postura del braccio sinistro atta a sostenere la schiena
del Bambino (addirittura la mano pare coinvolta in questa operazione).
Chiaramente immaginiamo il braccio sinistro della Vergine
poggiato in pressione sulla schiena del Bambino per sostenerlo
nonché un’ulteriore pressione della parte bassa del pugno
chiuso anche per contenere lo spostamento del corpo del
Bambino in avanti rispetto a Maria. La mano di Londra sottende
invece a una postura del braccio priva di senso: chi mai terrebbe
il proprio figlio in precario equilibrio sulle sue ginocchia senza
debitamente utilizzare il braccio sinistro per sostenerlo ma
tenendolo ridicolmente irrigidito dietro di lui, toccandolo appena,
con la mano rettilinea che invece di piegarsi sulle spalle di lui
a sostenerlo sembra unicamente propensa all’attività di reggere
un minuscolo mazzo di fiori?
Ma se il copista è un incapace, l’incapacità è un difetto che non
può non manifestarsi anche nella resa degli altri particolari del
quadro, soprattutto nelle altre mani e nei piedi in esso presenti.
Vediamo infatti che ciò puntualmente accade: la mano destra
del Bambino, che già Beck aveva detto “pare non stringere nulla”,
è stata dipinta con le nocche (trattasi delle nocche di congiungimento
delle dita al dorso) perfettamente e incredibilmente
allineate (fig. A, partic. 5). Ciò non può assolutamente accadere.
Le dita sono congiunte alla mano dalle nocche per posizioni sfalsate
che sottendono a un leggero semicerchio e le nocche di
medio e anulare devono per forza sporgere oltre a quelle di indice
e mignolo! Ma la catastrofe prosegue quando, con un buon
ingrandimento, andiamo a controllare tra indice e pollice (fig.
A, partic. 6), nel punto cioè in cui lo stelo (unico) dei garofani
deve essere stretto dal Bimbo. È ben facile accorgersi che le dita
non stringono alcunché, perché lo stelo si trova non tra le dita
ma dietro di loro.
Oltre a essere sbagliata, anche se le nocche fossero sfalsate e
lo stelo fra le dita, quella in oggetto sarebbe una postura estremamente
antiestetica e innaturale per tenere un unico stelo: in
questa operazione qualsiasi buon pittore coinvolgerebbe anche
il medio in pressione sullo stelo e varierebbe le aperture delle
dita onde creare una presa armonica ed elegante. Perché dunque,
ci chiediamo, le dita sono tutte unite e articolate nello stesso
modo? Non credo che il copista abbia sbagliato anche questo
(avrebbe esagerato): tale strana postura sembra trasferirsi
all’originale stesso ed essere una sua caratteristica. Ma perché
Raffaello avrebbe dipinto la mano in quella postura con tut-
te le dita affiancate e piegate allo stesso modo? Che cosa precisamente
è successo?
Di nuovo è il dipinto di Detroit a spiegarcelo: nell’originale, da
cui questo pittore copia bene, il Bimbo non stringe un solo stelo,
bensì tutto il gruppetto di steli e boccioli che più sopra si estendono
e che invece il copista di Londra ha fatto sparire. Ecco perché
la mano è così concepita. Perché non deve stringere tra indice
e pollice un’unica sottile entità, ma deve stringere all’interno
del palmo una massa ben più consistente e a questo serve
l’incavo all’interno della mano e a questa maggior massa cilindro-
conica si adattano necessariamente le dita che non possono
così che essere tutte affiancate e piegate allo stesso modo (postura,
a questo punto, non più incongruente ma necessaria).
L’assoluta sicurezza di tutto ciò ce la dà l’analisi dello sguardo
del Bimbo nel dipinto di Londra: dove mai sta guardando (fig.
A. partic. 7)? Beck lo definisce addirittura strabico, ed effettivamente
è vero, ma per di più egli guarda in una porzione di
spazio vuota che sta tra i garofani ed il volto di Maria. Perché
guarda nel vuoto? Che senso ha?
Basta controllare il dipinto di Detroit (fig. B) per capire com’era
concepito l’originale e per rendersi conto di come il dipinto di
Londra non possa che esserne una mala copia: il Bimbo guardava
intensamente (come ben copia il pittore di Detroit) i garofani,
garofani che si trovavano ben eretti verso l’alto al di sopra
del pugno del Bambino. Bene, non sapremo mai quanto in
alto si estendessero i garofani nell’originale, ma sicuramente
più in alto dei due, miseramente ripiegati, che invece vediamo
nella copia di Londra, ed è qui che si evidenzia la copiatura da
un originale diversamente concepito: il copista di Londra, pur
avendo eliminato l’elevazione verso l’alto dei garofani, ha però
mantenuto la direzione dello sguardo del Bambino verso il punto
in cui prima essi si trovavano.
Non è finita. Un altro disastro infatti si rileva nella mano destra
di Maria (fig. A, partic. 8): se controlliamo la lunghezza delle prime
falangi vediamo che quella dell’anulare è più lunga di quella
del medio e quella del mignolo è esageratamente più corta
di quella dell’anulare. Confrontiamo con la Madonna di Detroit
(fig. B): notiamo che la prima falange dell’anulare è correttamente
più corta di quella del medio, anche se qui è presente
un altro errore, rappresentato dalla prima falange del mignolo
che è erroneamente lunga come quella dell’anulare. Ma purtroppo
anche quello di Detroit è un copista e qualche errore lo
ha chiaramente fatto anche lui.
Passiamo adesso alla mano sinistra del Bimbo (fig. A, partic.
9): questa mano, che pare non avere nessuna funzione, si presenta
anch’essa con le dita vicine e piegate nello stesso
modo, cosa che produce un effetto estetico poco piacevole. Andiamo
perciò a controllare il dipinto di Detroit per vedere se ci
sono differenze.
Certo che ci sono! Non siamo di fronte ad errori enormi come i
precedenti ma vediamo che qui le punte delle dita tendono a convergere
tra di loro, postura che sottende al prepararsi ad afferrare
qualcosa di sottile (la mano infatti si sta muovendo verso lo stelo
basso dei garofani per afferrarlo come la mano destra del Bimbo
ha già fatto per la parte alta) e l’effetto estetico è migliore.
Bene, con le mani abbiamo finito e ce n’è per avere certezza che
il quadro è stato dipinto da persona completamente ignara dell’anatomia
e della postura delle mani. Ma siamo ben lontani dalla
fine: ci sono ancora da analizzare i piedi del Bambino.
Già Beck aveva notato l’oscena conformazione del piede destro
(fig. A, partic. 10), dalla pianta esasperatamente ricurva e dalla
parte superiore schiacciata, tanto da rendere tutto il piede assurdamente
contratto, nonché l’esagerato rigonfiamento del calcagno.
Io aggiungo che nel piede sinistro (fig. A, partic.11) abbiamo
la situazione diametralmente opposta, cioè la parte superiore
troppo gonfia, tanto da rendere lo spessore dell’intero
piede enorme e assolutamente innaturale. Ci troviamo insomma
di fronte a due piedi entrambi orrendi che, per giunta, sono l’uno
il contrario dell’altro, l’uno di spessore troppo sottile e l’altro
di spessore esageratamente grosso.
Andiamo allora a confrontarli con quelli del dipinto di Detroit
(fig. B). Vediamo che il piede destro è qui di spessore giusto,
la pianta curvata in maniera assolutamente naturale e il calcagno
è perfettamente normale. Vediamo anche come il piede sinistro
non abbia nessun gonfiore ma risulti nelle dimensioni
identico a quello destro.
Gia Beck aveva notato come nel dipinto di Londra (fig. A, partic.
12) le caviglie del Bimbo praticamente non esistessero, come
i piedi vi si innestassero in maniera innaturale e come mancasse
completamente ogni definizione del polpaccio nella gamba di
sinistra (fig. A, partic. 13). Andiamo a controllare nella copia di
Detroit (fig. B) e ci accorgiamo che gli innesti col piede, soprattutto
quello sinistro, sono più sottili ed armonici e che il polpaccio
sinistro è stato normalmente sagomato.
Ho voluto completare la disanima delle mani e dei piedi per restare
in argomento, ma avrei dovuto, per ordine di importan-
za parlare prima del braccio destro del Bambino. Ci troviamo
di fronte infatti, in questo caso, alla palese dimostrazione della
totale incapacità di questo “pittore” di dipingere le prospettive
anatomiche.
Osserviamo come il braccio destro del Bimbo (fig. A, partic. 14),
dalla spalla al gomito, sia ridicolmente corto (la cosa si apprezza
senza bisogno di analisi esplicative). Ciò rappresenta un errore
madornale in quanto è chiaro che il braccio e l’avambraccio
sono prospetticamente diretti verso il fiore e quindi parzialmente
diretti verso di noi. Bene, se l’intero arto fosse completamente
steso, avambraccio e braccio (che sono anatomicamente della
stessa lunghezza) ci apparirebbero accorciati (a causa della
prospettiva) ma della stessa misura. Se invece l’avambraccio
viene piegato verso di noi facendo un angolo col braccio (come
qui accade), esso deve accorciarsi ulteriormente e risultare quindi
più corto del braccio retrostante oppure, se la piegatura non
è eccessiva, almeno identico al braccio ma, sicuramente, non
più lungo.
Che cosa accade invece qui? Accade che l’avambraccio è molto
più lungo del braccio, e non di poco, perché risulta addirittura
il triplo del braccio! Siamo ben oltre qualsiasi forzatura.
La prova concreta di quest’ultimo errore di copiatura ce la dà
di nuovo il dipinto di Detroit (fig. B). Qui infatti le proporzioni
(e l’effetto ottico) sono quasi perfette in quanto l’avambraccio
risulta della stessa lunghezza del braccio.
Altro errore grossolano si rintraccia nel bicipite sinistro del Bambino
(fig. A, partic. 17), che è collocato esageratamente in basso
e termina addirittura sul collegamento con l’avambraccio.
L’assoluta ignoranza anatomica è poi confermata (se ce ne fosse
bisogno) dall’innesto del braccio sinistro del Bambino col
corpo (fig. A, partic. 18) : la linea di innesto termina in profondità
addirittura piegando verso l’alto, ignorandosi completamente
che l’innesto avviene col dorsale e quindi la linea
si inclina invece verso il basso, come giustamente dipinge il
copista di Detroit.
Guardiamo adesso il volto del Bimbo e ci accorgiamo (fig. A.
partic. 15) che la sua guancia destra è gonfia in modo esagerato
ed antiestetico; di nuovo andiamo a controllare sul dipinto
di Detroit (fig. B) e di nuovo ci accorgiamo che qui la guancia
è delle dimensioni giuste, molto più ridotte, e l’effetto visivo
è migliorato.
Passiamo poi più in alto e vediamo che l’arcata sopraccigliare
destra del Bimbo di Londra (fig. A, partic. 16) è eccessivamente
alta e rigonfia e di nuovo vediamo invece nel Bimbo di Detroit
(fig. A) che l’arcata è di dimensioni normali.
Se poi si vogliono comparare i due volti dal punto di vista formale,
quello di Londra ci appare come il volto di un piccolo pugile
suonato e dallo sguardo maligno, che cerca inutilmente l’avversario
che non è più in grado di vedere, mentre quello di Detroit
ci appare come uno splendido bambino dallo sguardo intenso
ed estremamente interessato ai garofani che stringe nella
mano. Del resto lo stesso volto di Maria non ha una buona
espressione.
Un errore incredibile si nota poi nell’ombra sotto il polpaccio
destro del Bimbo (fig. A, partic. 19): essa è molto più larga di
quella di Detroit e, quando impatta il cuscino nella parte sinistra,
invece di proseguire si interrompe e il cuscino sopra di essa
risulta addirittura, invece che in ombra, in piena luce. Tutto perfetto
invece nel dipinto di Detroit.
Ancora più inammissibile è l’errore dell’ombra del piede destro
del Bambino (fig. A, partic. 20): poiché la parte di pianta del piede
adiacente alle dita è illuminata, è ovvio che la luce non proviene
dall’alto ma da un punto piuttosto basso sulla sinistra che
non può dar luogo ad alcuna ombra del piede (semmai solo una
traccia vicino al polpaccio) sulla veste della Madonna. Nel dipinto
di Detroit infatti non esiste alcuna ombra in questo punto.
Con questo mi sembra che siamo ben oltre ogni forma di possibile
acclaramento e largamente fuori di ogni margine ammissibile
di opinabilità. Gli errori elencati sopra non sono pareri
o giudizi critici, sui quali è sempre lecito discutere: sono errori
e basta, sufficienti per far ripetere l’anno a uno studente di
liceo artistico. Ne consegue che l’esemplare della “Madonna dei
Garofani” acquistato per 65 milioni di dollari è la sciatta opera
di un copista incapace, non certo un Raffaello. Come seguace
delle teorie e dell’impegno di James Beck, nonché come
membro di ArtWatch Italia (l’associazione da lui fondata in difesa
delle opere d’arte, emanazione di ArtWatch International),
mi chiedo come sia stato possibile sperperare 65 milioni di dollari
di denaro pubblico in questo modo.
Ciò potrebbe riguardare solo il Governo inglese, anche se in maniera
non secondaria. Tuttavia c’è un punto che coinvolge direttamente
noi italiani e il Governo italiano. Raffaello è artista nostro,
che rappresenta ai massimi livelli la nostra cultura e la nostra
arte. Ritengo sia doveroso da parte dello Stato, e in particolare
da parte del Ministero dei Beni e delle Attività Culturali, tu-
telarne l’immagine. Potremo noi sopportare che per sempre, in
avvenire, i visitatori della National Gallery pensino che un nostro
connazionale, genio indiscusso del panorama pittorico internazionale,
abbia dipinto uno scarto di tal genere? E che magari altri
scarti analoghi, con le medesime procedure e in altre raccolte
museali altrettanto prestigiose, seguano la stessa sorte?
Ritengo assolutamente necessario richiedere che l’etichetta con
scritto “Opera di Raffaello”, apposta a fianco della “Madonna
dei Garofani” nella National Gallery, venga al più presto rimossa,
avanzandone richiesta al Governo inglese e impegnando in quest’azione
diplomatica almeno lo stesso vigore con cui difendiamo
il prosciutto di Parma.

Is it a real Raffaello or simply a rough copy full of anatomical flaws?

In the summer 2010 the London National Gallery mounted an exhibition of 40 fakes purchased at the time and today finally revealed as such. As part of the same exhibition the current director Nicholas Penny presented a copy of “La Madonna dei garofani” as done by Raffaello Sanzio in order to prove that work as the only authentic; and that it was to be assigned beyond doubt to the painter of Urbino. The exhibition was clearly polemical against the art historian James H.Beck (leading expert in Italian Renaissance art which he taught at the Columbia University of New York) who had upheld the opposite idea in one of his posthumously issued essays (original title “Da Duccio a Raffaello. La pratica di attribuzione allo sbando”, Padova, Editoriale Programma, 2010).
At the time when Nicholas Penny was not yet the director of the National Gallery, he had strongly supported the purchasing of that work and also was strengthened by the consent (be it an almost completely tacit consent),of 30 selected prominent connoisseurs of Art History in the world.
Beck raised against them not only showing his deep knowledge of the presumed painter but also carrying forward an underlying observation: supposing that any artist could face ups and downs, could he ever forget or extemporarily take no notice of the basics of his expertise?
I must remind you that Beck had begun as a painter so he argued by personal awareness.
Being a painter myself, I will hereby try to delve into this subject using my knowledge. As far as director Penny and his experts’ theories are concerned, I will verify them for accuracy.
The fact itself becomes relevant because the mediocre painting (I’ll prove it is nothing but that) had been purchased by the National Gallery for the impressive price of 65 million dollars; the most expensive amount ever paid in the world per square centimetre (being the board approximately the size of an A4 sheet of paper).
Referring to the National Gallery’s Northumberland Madonna, which is only one out of the 55 ascertained existing copies, Beck asserted:
“in order to make its attribution credible, it should be firstly demonstrated that the Northumberland Madonna is outstanding for its conception and execution among all the others.”
For further precision I would add that If the London’s Madonna is the original one, any images somewhat linked to it must result from it or from one of its copies or engravings. Therefore, according to Beck’s assumption, none of those copies can be better than the “master” because we should then assume that some other artist would have been better than Raffaello at that kind of painting, whereas it is well-known that copies were mostly realized by minor painters without any particular art knowledge.
Moreover Raphael had a perfect knowledge of anatomy and a capacity for applying them to his painting which is absolutely insuperable , perhaps only matchable match. In particular – we will see why-I underline that all the paintings by Raphael (those undoubtedly ascribed to him) show ability and a finesse in composing hands and feet that we could only describe as more divine than human. Lastly I would like to add that towards the end of the ninth century, hands and feet not only represented the starting point of the connoisseurs’ analysis to assess a painter’s ability but also the fundamental critical guide to recognize his work.
What if it were to be demonstrated that the copy attributed to Raphael in London is full of anatomical mistakes, mainly on hands and feet (both those of the Baby and the Virgin)? And what if it be demonstrated that there is another existing copy (among those 55) which does not absolutely have such flaws in it?
This would clearly be the incontrovertible evidence that National Gallery’s painting is not Raphael’s work but a shoddy copy, even with no commercial value. Its value would be between 8 or 9 thousand dollars assessing it as an antique or even 0 if Beck’s hypothesis of it being painted by one from Vincenzo Camuccini’s circle, dated early 1800s is correct.
Well, we can go even further by giving technical explanations so that even inexpert eyes can notice the glaring mistakes, making use of another copy in which all of them are bogus. Now once again we ask ourselves: is it possible that Raphael made so many flaws and that a copyist was able to correct them all? That would be insanity!
If ever true what we have just presumed, the National Gallery Madonna would be nothing but a gross and poorly made copy. So the copy we are going to use to give it away would represent a far better copy of the lost original. I think it could also be put in place of the fake painting because it shows a much more attentive execution made by Sassoferrato, a man worthy by far of recognition as a painter.
We better get straight to the point and demonstrate our theories comparing the National Gallery copy to the painting of the Institute of Arts in Detroit.
Mistakes in the National Gallery painting

1)The first massive error stands in Mary’s left hand (figure A, particular 1):the last two phalanxes of her fingers are only slightly bent. There is no perspective. The last phalanx of both middle finger and ring finger are as long as the second phalanx whereas in actual fact the last phalanx is extremely shorter than the second. This in itself would be enough to deny that Raphael’s hands touched the painting because we know how perfect he was in painting hands in several different positions. Normally when keeping the second phalanx stretched out, the third naturally tends to bend itself towards the palm.
2) It is impressive how long the fingers are on Mary’s right hand (figure A particular 2): the phalanxes we see are long enough to be entire fingers. However there is the first phalanx missing, probably hidden by the perspective! I magnified the hand and added the rest of the phalanx. The result is tremendous: fingers would be twice as long.

3) Continuing with the fingers, we now focus on the index (figure A particular 3): in this position the joint of the index is a little further than the thumb’s joint. This means that the first phalanx should be at least twice as long as its natural size to reach that point.
To sum up, who painted this hand not only had no knowledge of hands’ structural and dimensional proportion, but even more so had no sense of their posture. We are obviously dealing with a person who badly copied the hand from the original.
Now we are going to have a look at a better copy, the one held Detroit.

1) The last two phalanx of middle and ring fingers seem to have the right size (figure B) as the second phalanx are almost at right angles to the level of the picture and then enormously reduced.

3) The joint of the index is perfect, too
You can tell at a glance that both the size and posture of the left hand in London’s painting are wrong whereas those of the Detroit painting are exact. Furthermore we can try to recreate the posture of Maria’s left hand (it is not possible but imagine we could do it). Now the only way we can make the last two phalanx of middle, ring and little fingers remain stretched out and with no perspective alterations as seen on London’s painting, is to make the fingers’ tips rest upon the most bulging area of the palm, which is the one closest to the wrist. Well, if we did something like that (except obtaining the wrong posture) we would realize that our thumb would spill out of the knuckles joining second and first phalanx (in other words it would spill out of the fist) whereas in the painting the thumb’s tip is not even out of the fist but close to the middle of it (Figure A particular 4). Now let us try to imagine we did the same on Detroit’s Madonna we would at once realize that the thumb’s tip would naturally spill from the fist.
Furthermore we come across a typical copyist mistake. Maria’s left hand spills abnormally out of the Child’s body. If you then tried to move the hand nearer towards the shoulder you would need a bigger or absurdly twisted arm. The painting of Detroit is not enough to understand this flaw. However we can turn to Leonardo’s Benois Madonna (to which Raffaello made reference, figure E). Here the hand stands in a perfect position, rightly rearward and naturally connectable to the shoulder.

It is suddenly noticeable that the left hand participates in sustaining the Child’s back. Let us imagine the Virgin’s left arm supporting the pressing weight of the Child’s back as well as the strain exerted to hold back the Child. The hand in London’s painting implies that the posture is nonsense: whoever would hold a child on their knee without involving their arms and hands? However we can notice the incapacity of the copyist in painting the other hands and feet of the painting, too. The Child’s right hand was painted with perfectly aligned knuckles (knuckles joining fingers and hand)and that just cannot be real because the middle and ring fingers’ knuckles cannot but stick out if compared to the index and little finger. Beck had already said that the right hand “looks as if it is holding nothing”. However the worst is yet to come! Magnifying the area between the index and thumb (figure A particular 5-6) we notice that the Child is not holding the carnation’s stem because it is not between the fingers but behind them.
Apart from being wrong, the posture in analysis is extremely anti-aesthetic and unnatural: a good painter would draw the medium finger pressing on the stem and would change the fingers’ posture in order to create a more harmonic and elegant grip.
So why are the fingers so close and equally articulate? I do not believe the copyist got this one wrong, too. I think the wrong posture origins from the original. But why would Raphael have drawn the hand that way? What exactly happened?
Again Detroit’s painting explains it all. There we can see that the Child is not holding a single stem but a bunch of stems and buds that the London’s copyist made disappear. Then the posture is not incongruent anymore but it is clearly necessary because obviously the Child would never have held just one stem in such a large grip.
We can definitely be sure that London’s painting is a bad copy by analyzing the Child’s gaze (figure A particular 7): what is he looking at? Beck even defines him as “cross-eyed” and it is indeed true. He looks in an empty space between carnations and Mary’s face. So why is he staring into distance? What is the sense of it all? Studying the Detroit’s painting (figure B) we notice that the Child is intensely looking at the carnations which were upright above Child’s fist. We will never know up to where carnations extended in the original copy. Of course they were higher than those we can see in London’s painting because the copyist eliminated the elevation of carnations but kept the direction of the Child’s gaze towards where the carnations were in origin.
It doesn’t end there. Observing Mary’s right hand (figure A particular 8) we notice that all the first phalanxes are wrong because the one of the ring finger is longer than the medium one and that of the little finger is excessively shorter than the one of the ring finger. In Detroit’s copy the first ring finger’s phalanx is correctly shorter than the medium one. However the first phalanx of the little finger is incorrectly as long as the ring finger’s one. It has to be reminded that Detroit’s painter was himself a copyist and it is then clear that he made some mistakes, too.
Now we move on to the analysis of the Child’s left hand (figure A particular 9): it looks like it has no function and is ugly to see how the fingers are so close and equally bent. In Detroit’s painting the fingers’ tips tend to converge which means that they are about to grip something thin and the aesthetical result is far better (this hand is sure enough about to grasp the lower part of the carnations’ stem).
Our study regarding the hands is over but this is not the end yet. We still must consider the Child’s feet.
As Beck already noticed the right foot shows a horrible conformation (figure A particular 10) with its extremely curved sole and flat upper area that makes the foot appear as it was contracted as well as the exaggerated swelling of the heel. I would add that the left foot (figure A particular 11) looks as though it is completely different compared to the right one as the former shows a swollen upper area so that the foot itself looks perfectly unnatural. We are faced with hideous and opposing feet.
In Detroit’s painting (figure B) the right foot has a correct depth, its sole is naturally curved and its heel looks normal. The left foot has no swelling and looks identical in dimensions to the right one.
In London’s painting Beck had already noted that the Child has almost no ankles on which feet lean unnaturally and the left leg’s calf has no settlement at all (figure A particular 12-13). In Detroit’s painting we notice that the foot joint, above all the left one, is thinner and more harmonic and the left calf is naturally shaped. I carried on focusing on hands and feet just not to go off the point. However to follow an order of importance I should have started reviewing the right arm of the Child first because I firmly believe that is the glaring demonstration of the painter’s total inability in painting in anatomical perspectives.
Observe how the right arm (figure A particular 14), from shoulder to elbow, is absurdly short (this is easy to notice without any further detailed analysis). That represents a massive blunder because arm and forearm are perspectively stretched towards the flower and then partially towards us. Well, if the entire arm was completely stretched out forearm and arm (which have anatomically the same length) would appear as shortened (because of the perspective) but they would have the same size. However if the forearm slightly bent towards us creating a sort of corner in the arm, it would shorten even more and then look shorter than the arm behind it. Or, if the bending was not excessive, then the forearm would be the same length of the arm but of course not longer than that.
What happens here instead is that the forearm is far longer than the arm and it looks even three times the arm! We are far beyond any kind of twisting. Once again Detroit’s painting (figure B) confutes the originality of London’s painting by showing the almost perfect proportions and perspectives as arm and forearm have the same length.
Another gross flaw is traceable in the Child’s left biceps (figure A particular 17) which is far lower down and even terminates on the forearm joint. Highlighting the absolute anatomical lack of knowledge is the way the Child’s left arm joins his body (figure A particular 18): the joining line ends too deeply bending itself upward whereas the joint should occur with the back and subsequently the joining line would bend downward, as evident in Detroit’s painting.
Now looking at the Child’s face we notice (figure A particular 15) that his right cheek looks anti-aesthetically swollen whereas it looks to be of the right size in Detroit’s one.
In London’s painting the Child’s right superciliary arch (figure A particular 16) is excessively high and swollen compared to the normal one in Detroit’s (Figure B). To sum up, the Child’s face in London’s painting looks like that of a young fighter; punched and with that evil look still squinting to find the opponent he can no longer see. The look of the Detroit’s Child is extremely intense and completely absorbed by the carnations he is holding in his hands.
Another inadmissible mistake lies in the shadow just below the Child’s right calf (figure A particular 19) which is larger than Detroit’s one and terminates where it finds the pillow instead of continuing. The pillow should then appear shaded but instead it looks even brighter.
Last but not least unacceptable flaw is the shadow of the Child’s right foot (figure A particular 20): as the area of the foot that is adjacent to its toes is lightened, it is clear that the light doesn’t come from the top but from a far lower source on the left. Which means that there should be no foot shadow on the Virgin’s dress (there could in case be a shadow only near the calf). There is no shadow in Detroit’s painting, indeed.
We are then beyond any reasonable clarification and widely beyond any admissible doubt. The above-mentioned flaws are not mere opinions or criticisms about which one can argue; they are mistakes gross enough to make a high school student fail his exam. It follows that the copy of “The Madonna dei garofani” purchased at the price of 65 million dollars is just the slipshod work made by a failure copyist, not a Raffaello, of course. As a supporter of James Beck as well as member of ArtWatch Italia (association founded by Beck himself to protect art works, a branch of ArtWatch International), I wonder how could they waste 65 million dollars of public funds that way. One could even say that this is a British Government matter. However I believe this problem should implicate the Italian people and the Italian Government, too. Raffaello is an Italian artist who impeccably represents our culture and art. I firmly believe the State and above all the Ministry for cultural assets and activity should do whatever they can to protect those art works and Raffaello’s image. Could we ever stand the fact that many visitors from all over the world look at such a monstrosity thinking it was painted by our internationally renowned genius Raffaello? Or could we ever forgive ourselves for letting any other similar junk be part of prestigious museums?
Therefore I consider it necessary to request for the tag with “work of Raffaello” written on it to be removed as soon as possible. I make this request to the English Government committing myself in this diplomatic action in the same sense of belonging in which we all strongly safeguard our widely displayed Parma ham.

In 2017 I was commissioned by Hodder Education, a Hachette UK Company to become part of the author team of the Cambridge IGCSE Italian book which was subsequently published in 2019.
I obtained my Honours Degree 2:1 in Foreign Languages and Literatures in 2007.
I completed a PGCE in Modern Languages at Bath Spa University in 2015, which included two school placements and three assignments at Masters level. This enhanced both my knowledge of the education sector and my writing and research skills.
In 2011, I was commissioned by the Italian artist Alberto Cottignoli to translate an article which was subsequently published. The piece is called "National Gallery Madonna of the Pinks" and it was published by the cultural association "Jacopo Landoni", with the collaboration of Artwatch International, Columbia University, New York.
I have also undertaken translations on a voluntary basis for a religious website called "Gospel Translation".
In addition to my translation commitments, I worked part time as a secondary school teacher of Italian, Spanish and French in the UK, where I have lived since 2009. Teaching has highly improved my organisational skills and ability to meet very tight deadlines.
As well as fluency in both Italian and English, I have an in depth knowledge of the culture and lifestyles of both countries.
