Collaboration - potential for higher-quality translation May 10, 2008

Hola ojos de salado,

I do agree that we need a little more patience and to trust ourselves when translating.

But I believe more strongly that collaborating with other translators often leads to a higher quality translation. By bouncing ideas off each other, one can arrive at that one word/phrase that seems to fit best.

Of course, there is a fine line between consulting with others and abusing their help. We need to take ownership of our own translations.

Of course, there is a fine line between consulting with others and abusing their help. We need to take ownership of our own translations. But I think, out of fairness to the client, we should be open to asking for SOME help to arrive at a potentially higher-quality translation for a client.

As a recent university graduate and someone still gaining specialization, I would rely more on fellow translators than professional translators with years' experience. I do still think, though, that no matter our experience or ability, we can often provide the highest-quality translations by collaborating with others. Just my two cents' worth! Glad to have read your article!

Cordialmente,
Miriam
