I try to save, but I don't regularly as my savings fluctuate wildly per month based on what is going on in my live (and in my children’s lives).

Even if I try something always comes up (traffic fines, accidents, house repairs... unexpected expenses...) to undermine the effort.

The bank has been automatically squirrelling away €50 a month into my a savings account for years. Originally it was to pay my taxes as they don't do PAYE in France, but I'm mostly exempt and can simply cough up whenever I do need to pay something. It's there to be dipped into if ever I run into any kind of trouble. I have never needed it but it affords peace of mind.

Since income fluctuates from month to month in freelancing, the "fat months" must contribute toward potential "lean months".

Though a lot less than I should if I bought less usless and unnecessary stuff and if I made more food at home instead of buying it from restaurants.

I spent an obscene amount of money (US$13,000) on veterinary bills in 2015, which really set me back -- and the dog didn't survive.
