The audio should be quite loud - in fact on my end as listener it is almost too loud. There is an audio icon on the left of the video screen - ensure that is turned all the way up. Likewise check your computer speakers or headset volume.

As this is a live panel, there is no pre-recorded low bandwidth option. The full recording of the session will be available on this same page in 24-48 hours.

It was not only very useful and very well presented but also gave me some new ideas on how to explain to my students 'concept based terminology' in termbases, in a very simple and clear manner. Hi Mirko,

memoQ's aligner is good but not perfect, but the big thing about LiveDocs is that it's not a TM. Traditionally a TM is built from the alignment, and you align everything, you go through all segments. Now this is what you should not do with memoQ. Just get the two files into a LiveDocs corpus, and when you see a match where the source does not correspond to the target, right click on the match, select Show document, and then fix the alignment on the spot. Also, make sure you realign after you have fixed a few links, because that can improve the alignment dramatically (it does not override human decisions).

So just make the adjustments as issues come, and don't worry about the rest. There is no need to pre-align anything - that, we believe, is a waste of time unless you are translating a document that's almost identical to a previous one (you can use Statistics to quantify the overlap between the alignment source and the translatable source).

Unless I'm missing something, alignment through LiveDocs didn't seem so different from alignment with other tools (say, for instance, the old s42align from SDLX) to me, after all, and in all the files I've aligned so far with it, I still needed to go through each one manually after alignment, since several segments were not matched correctly (or not matched at all) or were joined together when they shouldn't have.

I guess this is unavoidable, all things considered, but saying that you don't have to worry about alignment at all, since MemoQ does it all automatically (without fail), seemed a little 'far fetched'' to me... (unless things have dramatically improved with the upcoming MQ 2013, of course)

You will be watching along as the instructor/trainer demonstrates features and functions. Nevím jak jiné instituce EU, ale Evropská komise cenu nestanovuje. Cena je součástí nabídky externího dodavatele (jednotlivce či agentury), když se hlásí do tendru. Je to jedno z mnoha kritérií, které se v rámci tendru posuzují.

Hi Tanja...thanks for letting us know that the video access post event was not working for you. The access settings appear to have a bug in the code that is preventing you from seeing the videos after the event. You should be able to (irrespective of ProZ.com membership status).

I will work on sorting that out for you ASAP and then let you know via this forum thread.

It would appear that non-paying members of Proz who were signed up for the event and were not able to attend at the time cannot view the videos after all as this is the message you recieve: "This event has already been held. To gain access to this content, become a ProZ.com member."

IMHO, many bilingual people will never get what it takes to be translators and this is perfectly fine.

I believe that only proper training and/or mentoring or internships and guided practice can turn someone into a translator :-)

To quote the introduction to the event:

The text in italics makes this event appear as if it were indeed organised by Proz.com and as if it were indeed Proz.com's opinion that freelance translators must build a "multiple stream business". At least that's what I would think based on this introduction. Apparently I'm wrong but still that's the impression not only I got from this text.

Hi all,

Siegfried's comment reminded me of my days as a university student: I was studying English to become a teacher but I always particularly enjoyed translation. However some of my teachers discouraged me from becoming a translator, claiming that you could not make a living from translation, and that it was only worth doing as long as you had another, better-paid job...

I became a translator anyway 5 or 6 years later, and I'm really glad I did! I have now been a freelance translator for almost 3 years, I'm loving it and I think it's a crying shame that some people (especially teachers!) try to discourage students from doing what they love!

ps: this is not actually related to the topic of the conference, but I just wanted to share this after reading the previous comments!

Hi Drew,
I am quite astonished that my entry was not deleted yet. You should know by now that I am actually somebody who believes in the value of ProZ. But fact is that the web is much larger than ProZ and its for a and if you (ProZ) would care more about what happens at other places in the web (such as Facebook groups, LinkedIn and blogs, you would have realized that this topic and the statements made by Joy Mo did not really trigger a very positive response. And the statement "1,200+ ProZ.com community users have registered to attend...." is something I won't comment on.

Don't worry, I'll register for the event, I am always interested to hear why translators are "living at the client’s mercy". Just this segment drives me mad. If this would be really the case, we should tell all students to stop studying translations asap and to learn a decent job like flipping Burgers.

Siegfried, nowhere does it say that "ProZ.com no longer believes that translators can survive just by translating" - this is simply incorrect, and a disservice to follow up readers as they may assume that your opinion is fact.

The comments you have quoted are from the income diversification virtual event organizer Joy Mo. She has diversified her income and now is showing others how she has done it, and why she has found it valuable for her business. The event is free, and if you do not need or care to hear about means to diversify your income, you are certainly free to skip this event.

1,200+ ProZ.com community users have registered to attend. It would be reasonable to assume that they are interested in learning from Joy Mo ways in which they may be able to diversify their income.
