Hello,
I am translating an excel file of a website in SDL 2009.
I am told to respect layout of text and this requires adding a few empty lines between other lines of text within the same segment.
The client needs a bilingual file.
How do I do this in SDL 2009 as pressing enter does not do the trick?

No source file = no target file.

By the way, the client should send you the source file, not just so that you can produce a target file, but also because it's very important to see the context of what your translating.

This is my first time working with Trados, so I'm at a loss. I was sent an XLIFF file and a TTX file - the customer said I could use either one, so I worked with the XLIFF document. Do I need something else in order to save the target file? I've already pressed F8, and the file comes up as having no errors. Is there something else I should do?

This is because it is still WAY overpriced...it's as if they don't care if anybody buys it or not. I can't for the life of me understand why they don't make this product more affordable and accessible to freelancers such as myself who are looking to expand. I had to do a lot of digging to come up with a price.

It gives error msg. Failed to save target content. "w" is an undeclared name space. Line 1, position 2.

It sounds simple, however I cannot see any "w" in line 1, position 2 when I have the window open and I am translating it.

In fact, it's possible but AFAIK undocumented and really primitive if compared to the previous license management system.

Open regedit and go to the hive
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\NalServ\Parameters
Create a new string value called [b]LoggingPath[/b]
Edit the string (enter the path for logging).
Of course, it's impossible to revoke a license manually but you'll be able at least view the logs...
Nonetheless, without some smart filtering, it will be hard to use for bigger teams.

AFAIK it works starting from the Licensing Toolkit 1.4.

Being a Marketing lad myself, I can't give you a full technical explanation, but from what I can find, the following might answer your question:

Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable SP1 MFC is a prerequisite piece of software that Studio installs as part of its set-up process. you can find a reference to it here:

(CTRL F and search for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable), you'll come across the reference on page 23.

Having looked through the Knowledge Base I notice there has been a security update to Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable SP1 MFC. You can find details here

Hi all
whenever I open my Trados Studio 2009 SP3 today I am asked to download a cumulative update, something about Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable SP1 MFC
However, checking the SDL Knowledge Base for more details, I can't find anything about this particular update, and I can't see any updates at all on today's date

Anyone knows anything about this? Is it safe to update? And is it any use at all?

David. I'll try reinstalling when time permits!

However, the whole MT program starts on booting up, not the Widget (my Autostart folder is empty!), so it is definitely not a widget-related problem (at least I don't think it is!). I'll let you know if a reinstall solves the problem!

Hi,

Firstly, MultiTerm works independently from the license, so no problems there with the uninstall.

However, it sounds as though you may have installed MultiTerm Widget. Part of the MT install is to have MulitTerm Widget as part of your start up. And this can cause delays in booting up.

Therefore review Start - All Programs – Start up. Locate any SDL Trados Studio 2011 related software such as MultiTerm Widget. Right click and select Remove

I am using Trados Studio 2011 Freelance on a computer with XP.

After a 'system out of memory error' I find I cannot reopen the file.

I get this error message: Unexpected error when detecting file type for file (file name). Sudden file end. The following elements not closed: internal-file, reference, header, file, xliff. Line 1453, position 1.

I tried redoing the file and using the Project TM which worked. I almost completed review and then it happened again. Any ideas what I can do?

Hello,

I have the exact same problem with Studio 9 with this error message "Beim Ermitteln der Dateiversion ist ein Fehler aufgetreten". The first time it happened I was in panic, because I was just about to finish a big project and I was not able to open the file.

Solution: Open the task manager and force the program to shut, reopen the program, and it works again. I know this is not the ideal solution, because it happens over and over again, but I don't know what else to do. I tried to get into contact with SDL, but they don't respond, and on their website, there is no technical support. In my opinion, this is unacceptable, as I paid a lot of money for this program...

So if one day, somebody has the solution, you are welcome to tell us! :)

for Confirming and moving to the next non-confirmed segment, and as Heinrich said Ctrl+Alt+Enter is the default for moving to the next segment (confirmed or not). Also as Heinrich suggested, from the Tools > Options > Keyboard Shortcut menu you can edit the various available Keyboard shortcuts.

No way.
Wait for Studio 3000 :)

BTW, if the licenses are leaking (i.e. they're not not returned properly, it happens), the most rapid workaround is to restart the license server.

Hello, I have a small but annoying problem. Since I installed Studio 2011 on my new computer (Core i7, Windows 7 64 bit), MultiTerm starts up on booting. MT is not in my Autostart, I have installed Autoruns but it cannot find MT either, and it is annoying because it delays booting. I suspect the only way to deal with this is to uninstall MT and reinstall it (but I'd be happy for any other tips!).

This takes me to my question - if I want to uninstall MT, must I return the licence first? As far as I can see there is no licence manager in MT, only in Studio, which I do not want to uninstall. Or can I happily uninstall then reinstall MT without worrying about the licence?

In Studio you can freely chose the key combination you like. Did you try Cntl+Alt+Enter? this should by default get you to the next segment and confirm the previous translation. There is also the command confirm and move to next untranslated segment, which I have as Alt+Down like in Wordfast.

Hi,

If the toolbar is greyed out then perhaps the shortcuts are not supported for this filetype? The ctrl+comma will work when you are in the target segment and are adding tags, or placeables that are coming from the source.

Hi Anatolian,

An SDLXLIFF file is language pair specific, this means it marks the language pair within the background of the bilingual file so for example Turkish would be TR and English could be EN-UK or EN-US.

Even though a glossary is multilingual, the bata base - the term recognition window needs to respect the language codes within the current bilingual file open within the Editor Window. So it’s during the adding of the Termbase the Termbase indexes (language pair lookup) need to be confirmed and match that of what you have open for translation.

If you are getting a red dot, it may indicates there is a conflict between what language pair you have noted within your SDLXLIFF and what you have available in your glossary.

It could be that your Termbase only allows for EN-UK in the meantime you have a EN-US SDLXLIFF file open?

You see when you create a Termbase you specify if you want to include all sub-languages in which case it would not matter if it’s a UK or US SDLXLIFF file. However by default the “include sub language” is disabled in which case it would be pedantic on the exact language match when refereeing to what you have open in the editor window.

So in short, check the Termbase language pairs and also look to see if the 'include sub language' field is checked.

G'day everyone

Today I received a TTX file that is partially pre-translated. I tried pre-translating it again against the client's TM, with the setting "100%", so that (in theory) any non-100% pre-translated matches would be changed to the source text, but that doesn't happen. So, how can I turn a pre-translated TTX file into a non-translated TTX file?

Hello

I've recently bought Trados 2011 and am having real trouble formatting my target text. My toolbar is showing at the top of the screen but it's greyed out and therefore I can't use any of the options (bold etc.). To make things worse, when following the manual, the 'Ctrl + comma' command doesn't do anything! As a user of MemoQ I'm a totally baffled, as I've never experience such problems before!

I am translating an Excel file containg double spaces between words using Trados 2007 (Workbench and TagEditor). When I get a perfect or partial match, the double spaces automatically multiply to five spaces.
How do I avoid that?
The client wants to keep the double spaces.
Please, don't tell me to use Studio!
