Source text - English The GFDL Modular Ocean Model (acronym MOM) is a three-dimensional primitive equation general ocean circulation model. The model is intended to be a flexible tool for exploring ocean and coupled air-sea applications over a wide range of space and time scales. Although MOM is first and foremost an ocean modeling research tool used by researchers at NOAA's Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL), MOM has been made available as a service to the oceanographic community.
The GFDL ocean models are all essentially based upon the same set of prognostic and diagnostic equations, and share most of the same assumptions and approximations. Central to these models is the numerical implementation of a form of the primitive equations cast in spherical coordinates (since the vertical axis is specified in terms of depth, the GFDL ocean models may be referred to as z-coordinate models). However, the Fortran code structure, physical parameterizations and diagnostic options available in the various GFDL ocean model codes have differed greatly.
The GFDL Modular Ocean Model is intended to be a flexible tool for exploring ocean and coupled air-sea applications over a wide range of space and time scales. The model can be configured for many uses. At GFDL, MOM has been used in applications ranging from coarse resolution global climate change simulations, to high resolution simulations of the Gulf Stream and its related mesoscale eddies, to studies of phenomena such as El Nino in the tropical Pacific. Many researchers use MOM in very idealized configurations, in order to examine some of the more basic aspects of ocean circulation.
