Source text - Spanish La polinización es uno de los procesos ecológicos fundamentales para mantener la viabilidad y diversidad de las angiospermas y es una interacción ecológica que tiene importantes consecuencias para los servicios de los ecosistemas y para la producción de plantas cultivadas (Pimentel et al. 1997, Allen-Wardell et al. 1998, Kearns et al. 1998, Norberg 1999, Cunningham et al. 2002, Kremen et al. 2002, Klein et al. 2007). Cerca de 35% de la producción global de alimentos de origen vegetal proviene de plantas que dependen de polinizadores y un tercio de la dieta de los seres humanos está constituida por verduras, legumbres y frutas polinizadas por insectos, de los cuales más del 90% son abejas (Klein et al. 2007).
La diversidad y la abundancia de polinizadores, en especial de abejas, está relacionada con aumentos en el amarre de semillas y frutos de muchas especies vegetales
(Rathcke and Jules 1993, Aizen and Feinsinger 1994, Steffan-Dewenter and Tscharntke 1999, Kremen et al. 2002, Klein et al. 2003b, Ricketts et al. 2004) aunque la relación entre diversidad de polinizadores y polinización de cultivos depende de otros factores tales como la eficiencia de cada especie polinizadora en cada cultivo, la dinámica de las poblaciones de polinizadores y la competencia por polinizadores entre plantas cultivadas y silvestres (Balvanera et al. 2001). Sin embargo, los servicios ambientales no están determinados
necesaria o exclusivamente por la biodiversidad, sino que pueden derivarse también de la biomasa y de otros atributos de las biotas (Myers 1996).
El café (Coffea arabica L.) es una especie autocompatible,
la cual puede o no beneficiarse de los polinizadores animales. Sin embargo, altos números de visitas por insectos polinizadores, en especial por la abeja melífera (Apis mellifera L.), se correlacionan con aumentos en el amarre y el peso de los frutos de café (Raw and Free 1977, Manrique and Thimann 2002, Roubik 2002, Klein et al. 2003a). La diversidad y abundancia de insectos visitantes de las flores del café difieren en cada sistema de cultivo y estos parámetros
están determinados en parte por la cercanía, la densidad y la extensión de los parches de vegetación natural asociados con el cultivo (Klein et al. 2002, Klein et al. 2003b, Kremen et al. 2004, Ricketts 2004, Olschewski et al. 2006).
Estudios previos han examinado varios aspectos de la polinización por insectos en cafetales, tanto en lugares donde el café es nativo, como en sitios donde es una planta introducida como cultivo, incluido México. Sin embargo, el presente es el primer estudio realizado en México considerando varios tipos de manejo de los cafetales e incluyendo en el diseño experimental diferentes tratamientos de polinización.
Los objetivos de este estudio fueron evaluar la diversidad y abundancia de los insectos polinizadores y su importancia en la producción de café, mediante el estudio de las posibles relaciones entre tratamientos de polinización (amarre, retención y tamaño de frutos de café), bajo diferentes tipos de manejo, y su relación con algunos factores bióticos y abióticos.
Translation - English Pollination is an ecological process fundamental for the maintainance of the viability and diversity of flowering plants. It is an interaction with important consequences for the ecosystems services and for crop production (Pimentel et al. 1997, Allen-Wardell et al. 1998, Kearns et al. 1998, Norberg 1999, Cunningham et al. 2002, Kremen et al. 2002, Klein et al. 2007). At a global scale, almost 35% of the food obtained from plants comes from species that depend on pollinators to set fruit or produce seeds. One third on the human diet is made up of vegetables, legumes and fruits pollinated by insects, 90% of which are bees (Klein et al. 2007).
The diversity and abundance of pollinators, especially bees, have been related to an increase of seed and fruit set in many plants (Rathcke and Jules 1993, Aizen and Feinsinger 1994, Steffan-Dewenter and Tscharntke 1999, Kremen et al. 2002, Klein et al. 2003b, Ricketts et al. 2004). However, the relationship between pollinator diversity and crop pollination may also depend on other factors such as pollination efficiency of the different species of pollinators, population dynamics of the pollinator species and the competition between cultivated and wild plants for pollinators (Balvanera et al. 2001). Moreover, environmental services are not exclusively or necessarily determined by biodiversity, but can also be determined by biomass or other features of the biotas (Myers 1996).
Coffee (Coffea arabica L.) is a self-compatible species, which may or may not benefit from pollination by animals. However, a high number of visits by pollinating insects, especifically honey bees (Apis mellifera L.), are correlated with increase in fruit set and fruit weight (Raw and Free 1977, Manrique and Thimann 2002, Roubik 2002, Klein et al. 2003a). The diversity and abundance of insects that are floral visitors, are different in each cultivation system and these parameters are determined in part by the density and the distance to natural vegetation patches associated with the crop (Klein et al. 2002, Klein et al. 2003b, Kremen et al. 2004, Ricketts 2004, Olschewski et al. 2006).
Previous studies have examined several aspects of insect pollination in coffee farms, both in areas where coffee is native and areas where it has been introduced, including Mexico. Our study is the first one carried out in Mexico which takes into consideration different management systems and diffent pollination treatments.
The goals of this study are: to evaluate the diversity and abundance of insect pollinators and their importance in coffee production and the influence of biotic and abiotic factors and pollination treatments on the response of coffee, measured as changes in fruit set and retention and in size of the coffee beans produced.

What is it about bees that make them so interesting? To most people, hive products, especially honey, spring to mind. To others, stings are first. Human interactions with these fascinating creatures, especially honeybees, are ancient. Even though there are several species of honeybees (Chapter VI – 25), and within the Western honeybee that is familiar in around the world there are many races (including the infamous “killer” or Africanized honeybee) (Chapter VI – 24), the world of bees comprises as many as 20 to 40,000 species. So, what is a species and what is a bee?
Bees can be thought of as specialized vegetarian wasps. They eat pollen, not meat, for protein (Chapter VI –25). They get protein from flowers (Chapter X –40) where they also obtain nectar, their energy fuel for flying (Chapters I – 3, V –18 & VI –20) and other activities (Chapters III – 10, IV – 13, V – 17 to 20). They are the micro-manipulators of flowers and bring about pollination, a process vital to human food and fibre production and to the sustainability of natural land-based ecosystems (Chapter X – 45). Some bees can be kept (Chapters XI – 46 to 51), but most are truly wild animals.
This book is mostly about the bees that human beings use. Bees are insects, they are animals, and they are part of the web of life on planet Earth. So how do they fit into the diversity of life? The science of taxonomy is the classification of life. It also includes the defining, describing and naming of species. At the level of species, organisms are referred to by two names, i.e., Genus and species of the binomial system, which together make up the scientific name. Simply put, species are reproductively isolated from each other: most can not interbreed at all, or at least if they do, fail to produce viable offspring. Chapters VI – 24 & 25 discuss the taxonomy of bees from the level of Order through genus and species to subspecies and races (see also below).
