The following sections describe the process flow and important control schemes for the butadiene unit.
The Butadiene plant recovers 1, 3-Butadiene from a C4 stream, which is fed from the ethylene cracker. The feed comes via a storage sphere which holds about 2000m3 and contains between about 35 and 45% 1,3-Butadiene. Almost all the impurities in the feed are lighter than 1,3-butadiene and are removed at the top of the main washer column as raffinate. Two small purge streams (from the bottom of the butadiene column and the side of the degasser column) remove heavy impurities, while propin is removed with a purge flow at the top of the propin column.
The plant consists of three main sections – the extractive distillation section, the NMP degassing section and the purification section.

The following sections describe the process flow and important control schemes. The purpose of the FCC unit is to convert high boiling, high molecular weight gas oil components into lighter, more valuable products -such as olefin rich LPG, gasoline, kerosene and light cycle oils.
1.1 Reactor and Regenerator (D601 and D602)
The feed to the FCC is pumped on flow control through preheat exchangers, where it is heated by light cycle oil and slurry from the main fractionator. The feed is then pumped on flow control to the reactor where it feeds into the catalyst riser, along with the slurry oil recycle from the bottom of the main fractionation column. Stripping steam feeds the catalyst riser to remove light hydrocarbons on the catalyst. The cracking reactions take place in the catalyst riser. The hydrocarbon vapours fluidise the powdered catalyst and the mixture of hydrocarbon vapours and catalyst then flow upwards to the reactor D60. In the reactor vessel, the cracked product vapours are separated from the spent catalyst using a cyclone. The reactor vapour product leaves in the overhead, with the spent catalyst flowing out of the bottom. Stripping steam is used to remove any light hydrocarbons from the catalyst in the reactor bottom section. The spent catalyst then collects in a drum, with the drum level controlled by manipulating a slide valve which adjusts the catalyst outflow to the regenerator.
