상기 화학식 1로 표시되는 헤테로 시클릭 화합물이 이차 전지의 전해질, 예를 들어 리튬 이차 전지의 전해질에 포함되어 수명 특성을 향상시키는 이유에 대해서는 전기 화학적 측면에서 이하에서 보다 구체적으로 설명한다. 다만, 이는 본 발명의 이해를 돕기 위한 것으로서 본 발명의 범위가 이하 설명의 범위로 한정되는 것은 아니다.
음극 표면에서의 SEI 층은 전해질이 전극과 접촉할 때 그 계면에서 전해질 성분의 환원분해반응에 의하여 그 분해 생성물이 침착 또는 흡착되어 새로운 계면층이 형성된 것이다. SEI 층은 다공성이며, 이러한 다공성으로 인해 리튬 이온만을 투과시키고 다른 전해질 성분을 투과시키지 않는다면 전지의 성능이 더욱 향상될 수 있다. SEI 층을 형성하는 비가역적 환원분해반응은 전해질 용매 분자의 환원반응뿐만 아니라 표면 작용기의 전기화학적 환원반응과 관련이 있다.
상기 화학식 1로 표시되는 헤테로 시클릭 화합물은 전해질 용매의 환원 전위보다 높다. 상기 화학식 1로 표시되는 헤테로 시클릭 화합물이 전해질 용매의 환원 전위보다 높은 이유로는, 벤조피라진 고리의 코어에서 비공유 전자쌍을 갖는 두 개의 “N” 원자들 사이에 위치하는 탄소 원자에 연결된 수소 원자가 전자 받게 작용기(electron withdrawing group), 음극 또는/및 양극 표면과 화학적으로 반응성(reactive) 작용기, 또는 이들 조합의 작용기로 치환되어 전자를 끌어가기 때문으로 여겨진다.
이로 인해, 상기 화학식 1로 표시되는 헤테로 시클릭 화합물은 상기 전해질 용매가 전기화학적으로 환원되기 전에 환원되어 전해질에 불용한 반응 결과물을 형성하게 되고, 음극 표면에 상기 반응 결과물을 포함하는 SEI 층을 형성하게 된다.
이렇게 형성된 SEI 층은 부반응물인 가스 발생을 감소시킬 뿐만 아니라 SEI 층의 안정성을 증가시킬 수 있어, 상기 화학식 1로 표시되는 헤테로 시클릭 화합물을 포함한 전해질을 포함하는 이차 전지는 수명 특성이 향상될 수 있다.
