English to Spanish: Initiating Community Engagement in an Ecohealth Research Project in Southern Africa General field: Medical

Background: Community Engagement (CE) in health research ensures that research is consistent with the socio-cultural, political and economic contexts where the research is conducted. The greatest challenges for researchers are the practical aspects of CE in multicentre health research. This study describes the CE in an ecohealth community-based research project focusing on two vulnerable and research naive rural communities.
Methods: A qualitative, longitudinal multiple case study approach was used. Data was collected through Participatory Rural Appraisals, Focus Group Discussions, In-depth Interviews, and observations.
Results: The two sites had different cultural values, research literacy levels, and political and administrative structures. The engagement process included: 1) introductions to the administrative and political leaders of the area; 2) establishing a community advisory mechanism; 3) community empowerment and 4)initiating sustainable post-study activities. In both sites the study employed community liaison officers to facilitate the community entry and obtaining letters of permission. Both sites opted to form Community Advisory Boards as their main advisory mechanism together with direct advice from community leaders. Empowerment was achieved through the education of ordinary community members at biannual meetings, employment of community research assistants and utilising citizen science. Through the research assistants and the citizen science group, the study has managed to initiate activities that the community will continue to utilise after the study ends. General strategies developed are similar in principle, but implementation and emphasis of various aspects differed in the two communities.
Conclusions: We conclude that it is critical that community engagement be consistent with community values and attitudes, and considers community resources and capacity. A CE strategy fully involving the community is constrained by community research literacy levels, time and resources, but creates a conducive research environment.

Antecedentes: La Participación Comunitaria (PC) en la investigación de salud asegura que los estudios son consistentes con los contextos socioculturales, políticos y económicos donde se realiza la investigación. El mayor desafío para los investigadores son los aspectos prácticos de la PC en la investigación de salud que involucran múltiples centros. Este estudio describe la PC en un proyecto de investigación de ecosalud basada en la comunidad enfocándose en dos comunidades vulnerables e inexpertas en la investigación.
Métodos: Se usó un método cualitativo y longitudinal de estudio de casos múltiples. Se recopiló la información a través de Valoraciones Participativas Rurales, Discusiones de Grupos Focales, Entrevistas Detalladas, y observaciones.
Resultados: Los dos sitios tenían distintos valores culturales, niveles de competencia de investigación, y estructuras políticas y administrativas. El proceso de participación comunitaria incluyó: 1) introducciones a los líderes administrativos y políticos en el área; 2) el establecimiento de un mecanismo de asesor comunitario; 3) el empoderamiento de la comunidad y 4) iniciar actividades sostenibles de post-estudio. En ambos sitios el estudio empleó a oficiales como intermediarios comunitarios para facilitar la entrada a la comunidad y para obtener cartas de permisión. Ambos sitios optaron por formar Juntas de Asesor Comunitario como su mecanismo principal de asesoría junto con consejos directos de líderes de la comunidad. El empoderamiento se logró por medio de educar a los miembros comunes de la comunidad en las juntas bianuales, el empleo de asistentes de investigación de la comunidad y la utilización de la ciencia ciudadana. A través de los asistentes de investigación y el grupo de ciencia ciudadana, el estudio ha podido iniciar actividades que la comunidad continuará usar después de la terminación del mismo. Las estrategias generales desarrolladas son similares en principio, pero la implementación y el énfasis de los diferentes aspectos variaron en las dos comunidades.
Conclusiones: Concluimos que es crítico que la participación comunitaria sea consistente con los valores y las posturas comunitarios, y que considere los recursos y la capacidad de la comunidad. Una estrategia de PC que involucra enteramente a la comunidad se restringe por los niveles de competencia de investigación de la comunidad, por el tiempo y por los recursos, pero crea un ambiente conducente a la investigación.

American Literature), I have studied and worked professionally with the Spanish
language since 1997. Native to Canada, my passion for the language and my
native fluency leads Latin Americans to believe that I am originally from their
region. My dedication to studying and thriving with Spanish as my second
language was the motivation behind raising my children in Spanish. My expert
knowledge of the Spanish language is derived from a wide range of experience
including extensive travel throughout Latin America and Spain, writing academic
papers, and translating documents for various clients in the tech, health,
biology, science and social science sectors.
My interpreting experience includes interpreting for tours,
for international delegates at the Globe Series, as well as for Sustainable
Cities International at The World Urban Forum. I also have years of teaching
experience in BC's leading post-secondary institutions, as well as in private
secondary schools in Vancouver. I am an entrepreneur who provides Spanish language consultancy
services in the areas of Tutoring, Interpretation and Translation (www.SpanishInVancouver.ca).
My current focus involves teaching private Spanish lessons, freelance
translating, as well as providing contract interpreting services for Provincial
Health Services Authority and the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada, in
the Vancouver region.
I am also a member of

language professionals, as well as IAPTI, The International Association of
Professional Translators and Interpreters (Buenos Aires). I am also a proud
