I have written a lot about how trend trading can be a great way to put the odds in your favor when trading Forex (or anything else). Even though it is a style which is subject to draw downs, identifying and following trends has been found to be a consistently successful trading methodology, and can be followed by anyone, even novice traders.
I have looked at various entry methodologies and have tended to favor entering after pull backs which then return to the prevailing trend. However, I would like to present new research which suggests that a breakout entry style can be even more effective.
Identifying a Trend
All kinds of weird and wonderful methods exist for identifying trends, but it does not have to be complicated to be effective. I have found that simply determining whether the price is above or below its levels from 1, 3 or 6 months previously is enough to provide a statistical edge that the price will continue in that direction. The best results are obtained by using both 3 months and 6 months, although using 3 months alone has been very successful over recent years.
Pullback Entries
Continuing to keep things as simple as possible, I found that identifying pullbacks as occurring when the price makes a new 1 day low price in an upwards trend, or new 1 day high price in a downwards trend, can be very effective. I defined trend as above both the prices of 3 months and 6 months, or below both. The 4-hour Japanese candlestick making the price should have a range greater than the 30-period average true range (ATR), to show momentum in the direction of a prevailing trend. An entry is triggered if the price reaches 1 pip beyond the trend end of the candlestick during the next 4 hours. A stop loss is placed 1 pip beyond the other end of the candlestick.
Back testing this entry method against the four major Forex currency pairs over the last fifteen and a half years and considering a reasonable broker’s spread, showed it had a profitable expectancy per trade at all profit targets based upon reward to risk ratios. This is a good indication of a solid strategy:
Breakout Entries
I have always felt as a Forex trader that breakouts do not tend to work very well in trading Forex, compared to the way they work when trading stocks and commodities. It also always seemed logical to me that the pullbacks in trends would have the most profitable entries, as the price logically travels the furthest from these areas in a trend. What I was not properly appreciating was the fact that there are many “false starts” from pullbacks. Once I constructed a breakout system with a lot of filters to find entries within a trend, I was surprised to find that the results were better than those for the pullback entries shown above.
The breakout system is as follows:
1. Trade in the direction of the trend only using a 4-hour candlestick chart.
2. The 18 period SMA (simple moving average) must be the trend side of the 60 period SMA.
3. The candlestick must have a high or low beyond the trend side of the previous candlestick.
4. When the candlestick closes, the 10 period RSI (relative strength index) must be greater than 50 in an uptrend or less than 50 in a downtrend.
5. The range from high to low of the closed candlestick must be greater than the 30-period average true range (ATR).
This might seem like a lot of filtering, but all it really does is make sure that the short-term and medium-term trends are aligned with the long-term trend when the trade is entered. The significance of the moving averages lies only in that they give a very similar result to the 10-day RSI. In fact, this strategy is truly based upon the RSI – which I consider to be “the king of indicators” – being aligned on all time frames over 10 periods, from the daily time frame down to the 1 minute time frame, at the point of entry.
Performing the same back test as described previously using this entry method, surprisingly, produced a better positive expectancy at every reward to risk level below 20 to 1:
Conclusion
What these back-test results seem to show is that the breakout method is superior at achieving better results with smaller targets, while the very big moves are better caught very early in the pull-back’s turn back into the trend. In deciding which is a better approach to take in picking trend trade entries, don’t forget that taking more frequent profits should result in a compounding effect which magnifies overall profit.

Ho scritto parecchio su come una strategia di trend following possa essere un ottimo modo per portare i pronostici a vostro favore quando si investe nel trading Forex (o in qualsiasi altra cosa). Sebbene si tratti di uno stile soggetto a perdite, identificare e seguire i trend risulta essere un metodo d’investimento di successo, e che può essere utilizzato da chiunque, anche dai traders alle prime armi.
Ho osservato diversi metodi d’entrata, e personalmente tendo a preferire le entrate a seguito di cali che poi tornano in direzione del trend prevalente. Tuttavia, vorrei presentarvi anche una nuova ricerca, che suggerisce che le entrate sulle rotture possono essere addirittura più efficaci.
Identificare Un Trend
Esistono i metodi più disparati per identificare i trend, ma non dev’essere necessariamente qualcosa di complicato per essere efficace. Ho scoperto che semplicemente determinando se il prezzo si muove al di sopra o al di sotto dei suoi livelli di 1, 3 o 6 mesi fa è sufficiente a stabilire che, statisticamente, il prezzo continuerà a procedere in quella direzione. I risultati migliori sono ottenuti utilizzando sia 3 che 6 mesi, sebbene anche il solo utilizzo di 3 mesi abbia dato risultati molto positivi negli ultimi anni.
Entrate Sui Cali
Per continuare a mantenere le cose più semplici possibile, ho scoperto che l’identificazione dei pullback che si verificano quando il prezzo registra un nuovo minimo giornaliero in un trend rialzista, o un massimo giornaliero in un trend ribassista, può essere estremamente efficace. La candela giapponese generata dal prezzo dovrebbe avere un intervallo superiore all’average true range (ATR) a 30 giorni per mostrare slancio nella direzione di un trend prevalente. Si innesca un’entrata se il prezzo si muove di 1 pip oltre la fine del trend della candela durante le successive 4 ore, e si piazzerà dunque uno stop loss 1 pip oltre l’altra estremità della candela.
L’esecuzione di un back test di questo metodo d’entrata contro le quattro principali coppie di valute Forex nel corso degli ultimi 15 anni e mezzo, considerando anche un ragionevole spread da parte del broker, ha mostrato di dare aspettative positive su tutti i target di profitto sulla base del rapporto rischio/ricompensa. Ecco una buona indicazione di una strategia solida:
Entrate Sulle Rotture
Come trader Forex ho sempre pensato che le rotture tendono a non funzionare bene nel trading Forex, se confrontate a come funzionano nel trading azionario o di materie prime. Inoltre, mi è sempre sembrato logico che i cali nei trend avrebbero avuto le entrate più redditizie, poiché in un trend logicamente il prezzo si muove di più da queste aree. Quello che non stavo considerando è il fatto che ci sono molte “false partenze” dai pullback. Una volta costruito un sistema con molti filtri per trovare le entrate in un trend, sono stato sorpreso di scoprire che i risultati delle entrate sulle rotture sono stati migliori di quelle sui cali.
Il sistema di entrate sulle rotture è il seguente:
1. Investire nella direzione del trend utilizzando solo l’intervallo a 4 ore.
2. La SMA (media mobile semplice) a 18 periodi deve essere dal lato del trend della SMA a 60 periodi.
3. La candela deve avere un massimo o un minimo oltre il lato del trend della candela precedente.

5. L’intervallo tra il massimo e il minimo della candela chiusa deve essere superiore alla average true range (ATR) a 30 periodi.
Potrebbero sembrare parecchi filtri, ma in realtà tutto questo assicura che quando si apre il trade, i trend del breve e medio periodo siano allineati con quello del lungo periodo. Il significato delle medie mobili risiede nel loro dare un risultato molto simile all’indicatore RSI a 10 giorni. In effetti, questa strategia si basa realmente sull’allineamento dell’RSI (che personalmente considero il “re degli indicatori”) su tutti gli intervalli di tempo su 10 periodi, dall’intervallo giornaliero fino a quello a 1 minuto, al momento dell’entrata.
L’esecuzione dello stesso back test come descritto in precedenza ma utilizzando questo metodo d’entrata, sorprendentemente, ha prodotto aspettative di risultati migliori ad ogni rapporto rischio/ricompensa di livello inferiore a 20:1 :
Conclusioni
Ciò che sembrano mostrare i risultati del back test è che il sistema di entrate sulle rotture funziona meglio nell’ottenere migliori risultati con target più piccoli, mentre è possibile identificare meglio i movimenti più grandi quando il calo si inverte e torna a seguire il trend. Nel decidere quale sia l’approccio migliore da tenere al momento di aprire il trade, non dimenticate che ritirare frequentemente i profitti dovrebbe portare a massimizzare il risultato complessivo.

You should always use some kind of hard stop loss that is entered into your trading platform.
When your stop losses are hit, it can feel like a slap in the face. If the price then comes back in the direction that you originally wanted it to go, the anguish increases even more. You will need to ignore these feelings and instead be grateful that your stop loss limited the maximum amount you could possibly lose. Sooner or later you will be grateful that you had the stop in
place.Experts sometimes trade without hard stop losses. They can get away with this because they are experts and because they are probably using little or no leverage. Ignore these methods, for your own safety.
The most common mistake people make is assuming that stop losses should be put in a place where they will not get hit unless the trade is a real loser. That is one way to arrange things, but there is nothing wrong with using tighter stop losses as with most breakout strategies they produce higher profits over time. This is because the best trades usualy spend little or no time in negative territory. However, most new traders cannot stand the psychological pain of trading strategies with low win rates, so newer traders can find it much easier to use stops in a traditional way.
Regarding how much you should risk per trade, you should always risk a defined amount of your capital. If you are using a strategy that tells you that every trade you make has the same chance of winning, then you should bet the same amount of your account on each trade.
Figures of 1% or 2% are often quoted, we suggest instead that you risk no more than 0.5% per trade. This may seem over-conservative, but it gives a beginner the chance to trade with less pressure and worry. Losses will be less painful and easier to forget. You can always raise the amount when you have a well-established track record of trading profitably with real money.

The related subjects of leverage, margin and position sizing are not only widely misunderstood, they are also usually the key reasons why traders “blow up” their trading accounts. That’s why it is very important to make sure you understand the basics, which can be explained quickly and simply.
What is Leverage in Forex?
Leverage is your total maximum possible borrowing ratio.
Let’s say that a trader deposits $100 with a Forex broker who allows a maximum leverage of 100 to 1 (this would usually be written as 100:1).
This means that the broker will allow the trader to control maximum funds totaling 100 times his deposit of $100, i.e. $10,000.
Many people trading Forex don’t even understand there is a nominal value to the trades they make. For example, 1 lot of USD/JPY is worth $100,000. Your broker offering maximum leverage of 100 to 1 will not let you buy or sell 1 full lot of USD/JPY unless you have at least 1% of that nominal value deposited in your trading account (1% of $100,000), which is $1,000.
Depending upon market conditions, brokers may require even more than the advertised maximum leverage, which is just the furthest they are ever willing to go under the best circumstances. If conditions are very volatile, brokers typically lower the effective maximum leverage available.
Going back to our example of the trader depositing $100 with a Forex broker giving a maximum leverage of 100:1, that trader could buy or sell at most 0.1 lots of USD/JPY. This is because $100 X 100 = $10,000 and that is worth one tenth of a lot of USD/JPY.
What is Margin in Forex?
Margin is the minimum cash deposit required by the broker to cover any open trades. It is sometimes expressed as a percentage.
Using our previous example, a trader who wishes to buy or sell 0.1 lots of USD/JPY with a Forex broker offering a maximum leverage of 100:1 must deposit at least $100 as “margin” to cover that trade. Margin can be calculated as follows: Trade Value divided by leverage. Here, that is $10,000 divided by 100, equaling $100. Expressed as a percentage, the broker requires a margin deposit of 1%.
What is Position Size in Forex?
“Position size” is the quantity of what is being traded. Every currency pair is quantified by a standardized amount known as a “lot”. The value of a lot fluctuates between currency pairs. For example, as already mentioned, 1 lot of USD/JPY is always worth $100,000 while 1 lot of EUR/USD is always worth €100,000. Note that this means that unless EUR/USD is trading at 1.0000, the real values of 1 lot of USD/JPY and 1 lot of EUR/USD are going to be at least a little different. All lots are not equal!
Most brokers’ platforms express position sizes in terms of lots. Some display other measurements such as nominal value or their own unitary system. It is important to understand how your broker is quantifying position sizes. Traders tend to think in terms of how much cash and how many pips they wish to risk on a trade, making a quick mental calculation of value per pip, and then translating that into lot size. It is a good idea to use a position size calculator, as the cash value per pip fluctuates with market movements.
What is “True Leverage”?
A trader might open an account with a broker offering maximum leverage of 100:1. If you ask the trader how much leverage he or she has, they may reply, 100 to 1. This is true in a sense, but it is not their “true leverage”, which can fluctuate from moment to moment. True leverage is how leveraged you are from your trades open in the market at any given time.
As an example, let us imagine a trader opening an account and depositing $10,000. His broker offers him maximum leverage of 100 to 1. He opens a position (a trade) in EUR/USD with a nominal value of $10,000. How leveraged is he? Not leveraged at all! He has no true leverage, because his total exposure to the market is not more than his cash deposit. Even if his trade were to fall to a value of zero, he could not possibly lose more than he deposited.
True leverage is calculated as the total nominal value of all open trades divided by account equity (i.e. how much in cash the account would be worth if all open positions were closed).
Going back to our example, let’s imagine our trader opens another position with a nominal value of $10,000. He is now leveraged at 2 to 1 (we can ignore the small difference that might occur due to the first trade being in floating profit or loss), because he has two open positions, each worth $10,000.
Risk of Margin Call
A “margin call” is when your broker tells you that you do not have sufficient funds in your account to cover all your liabilities. The expression dates from the days before the internet, when trades were made over the telephone. If your margin was not enough to cover your losing trades, your broker would call and require that you either deposited more margin, or gave up on your account and accepted it as empty.
The same thing happens today, instantly and electronically, without the call.
You can use your true leverage to understand your risk of having your account wiped out, or subject to catastrophic losses from which recovery is usually extremely difficult or even impossible.
For example, if your true leverage is 2 to 1, then an adverse total price movement over all your open trades of 50% will wipe out your account.

While these numbers might look frightening, you might think that your stop loss orders will protect you from a catastrophic loss.
This is not necessarily correct. Most of the time stop loss orders are triggered with no slippage or with a very small amount of slippage. However, consider that during the Swiss Franc uncoupling of January 2015, most traders who had a true leverage against the Swiss Franc of more than 3 to 1 were completely wiped out, as most Forex brokers ended up quoting enormous price fluctuations without allowing any traders to exit for about an hour or so after the surprise announcement.
The interplay of risk and leverage is a complicated and controversial subject and I will turn to that in the second part of this article, to follow soon.

Che Cos’è La Dimensione Delle Posizioni Nel Forex?
La “dimensione delle posizioni” è la quantità di quello che viene scambiato. Ogni coppia di valute è definita da una quantità standard conosciuta come “lotto”. Il valore di un lotto fluttua fra le coppie di valute. Ad esempio, come già menzionato, 1 lotto USD/JPY vale sempre 100.000$, mentre 1 lotto EUR/USD vale 100.000€. Da notare che questo significa che a meno che l’EUR/USD non venga scambiato a 1.0000, il valore reale di un lotto USD/JPY e di 1 lotto EUR/USD sarà leggermente diverso. Non tutti i lotti sono uguali!
La maggior parte delle piattaforme dei broker esprime la dimensione delle posizioni in termini di “lotti”. Alcuni utilizzano altri sistemi di misurazione come il valore nominale, o il loro proprio sistema unitario. È importante comprendere come il vostro broker quantifica la dimensione delle posizioni. I traders tendono a pensare in termini di quanti soldi o quanti pips sono disposti a rischiare su un trade, facendo un rapido calcolo mentale del valore per pip, che poi si traduce nella dimensione del lotto. È una buona idea utilizzare un calcolatore di dimensioni delle posizioni, poiché il valore del denaro per pips fluttua con i movimenti di mercato.
Che Cos’è La “Vera Leva Finanziaria”?

Il suo broker gli offre una leva massima di 100 a 1. Il trader apre una posizione (un trade) sul cross EUR/USD con un valore nominale di 10.000$. A quanto corrisponde la sua leva finanziaria? A zero! Il trader non ha vera leva finanziaria, perché l’esposizione al mercato non è altro che il suo deposito di denaro. Anche se il trade scendesse a valore zero, non potrebbe perdere più di quanto depositato.
La vera leva finanziaria si calcola dividendo il valore nominale di tutti i trades aperti per il capitale dell’account (ad esempio, quanto varrebbe effettivamente l’account se tutte le posizioni aperte venissero chiuse).
Tornando al nostro esempio, immaginiamo che il nostro trader apra un’altra posizione con un valore nominale di 10.000$. ora la sua leva è di 2 a 1 (possiamo tralasciare la piccola differenza che potrebbe derivare dalla fluttuazione fra profitti o perdite del primo trade), perché ha due posizioni aperte, ognuna del valore di 10.000$.
Rischio di Margin Call
Si parla di “margin call”, o chiamata a margine, quando un broker vi dice che non disponete di fondi a sufficienza nel vostro account per poter coprire tutte le vostre passività.
L’espressione risale a prima di internet, quando i trades venivano effettuati per telefono. Se il vostro margine non era sufficiente a coprire i trades in perdita, avreste ricevuto una telefonata dal vostro broker che vi chiedeva di depositare un margine maggiore, o di chiudere l’account e accettare che fosse vuoto.
Oggi succede la stessa cosa, istantaneamente ed elettronicamente, senza telefonata.
Potete utilizzare la vostra vera leva finanziaria per comprendere i rischi di vedere il vostro account spazzato via, o soggetto a perdite catastrofiche dalle quali la ripresa è generalmente molto difficile, se non impossibile.
Ad esempio, se la vostra vera leva è di 2 a 1, un movimento di prezzo totalmente contrario a tutti i vostri trades aperti spazzerebbe via il 50% del vostro account.
Ecco una tabella che mostra il massimo movimento contrario possibile fino a prosciugare il vostro conto, a seconda dei vari livelli di vera leva finanziaria:

Questi numeri possono spaventare, e potreste pensare che gli ordini di stop loss vi proteggeranno da una perdita catastrofica.
Questo non è propriamente vero. La maggior parte delle volte gli ordini di stop loss vengono innescati senza slittamento, o con una quantità irrisoria. Tuttavia, considerate che durante il disaccoppiamento del Franco svizzero a gennaio 2015, la maggior parte dei traders che avevano una vera leva contro il Franco superiore a 3 a 1 sono stati completamente spazzati via, poiché la maggior parte dei broker Forex ha finito quotare enormi fluttuazioni di prezzo senza permettere ai traders di uscire per circa un’ora dopo l’annuncio a sorpresa.

WTI Crude Oil
The WTI Crude Oil market initially fell on Tuesday but found the $52 level to be supportive enough to turn things around and form a hammer. That being the case, it’s likely that the market will continue to go higher, and if we can break above the top of the candle, the market could then reach to higher levels. We get the Crude Oil Inventories announcement coming out during the day, so having said that I believe that pullbacks could appear, but they should in the end of being buying opportunities. Because of this, the market should then reach towards the $55 level above, which has been resistance in the past. I believe that the market has already made up its mind that it wants to go higher.
Natural Gas
Natural gas markets fell during the day but continue to find support near the $3.10 level. Because of this, I believe that the buyers are simply accumulating currently, and that the gap from the move a couple of weeks ago should continue to offer support. The 50-day exponential moving average breaking above the 100-day exponential moving average on the chart will have attracted a lot of longer-term buyers. On a break above the top of the candle for the session on Tuesday, I think that the market then goes to the $3.25 level above, and then eventually the $3.33 level above. I have no interest in shorting, least not until we break below the $3 level, which of course is something that doesn’t look very likely. Because of this, I think that short-term “buy on the dips” type of trade will continue to be a mainstay of what we see.
If we did break below the $3 level, I feel that this market would probably fall apart. However, that isn’t going to happen anytime soon from what I’m seeing on the chart.

Il mercato del petrolio greggio WTI inizialmente è sceso martedì, trovando però sufficiente supporto al livello 52$ da invertire il trend e formare un martello. È probabile che il mercato continuerà a salire, e se riuscissimo a rompere oltre il top della candela, il mercato potrebbe raggiungere livelli alti. Oggi avremo i dati sulle scorte di greggio, perciò credo potremmo assistere a dei pullback, anche se alla fine dovrebbero essere opportunità d’acquisto. Per questo il mercato dovrebbe dirigersi verso il livello 55$ al di sopra, che in passato ha fornito resistenza. Credo che il mercato abbia già fatto la propria scelta, e vuole salire.
Gas Naturale
I mercati del gas naturale sono scesi durante la giornata, continuando però a trovare supporto nei pressi del livello 3,10. Per questo credo che attualmente gli acquirenti stiano semplicemente aumentando , e che il gap dal movimento di un paio di settimane fa dovrebbe continuare ad offrire supporto. La rottura della media mobile esponenziale a 50 giorni oltre quella a 100 giorni avrà attirato parecchi acquirenti che operano nel lungo periodo. Con una rottura oltre il top della candela per la sessione di martedì, penso che il mercato salirebbe al livello 3,25$, e alla fine al 3,33$ al di sopra. Non ho alcun interesse ad andare short, o almeno non fin quando non avremo rotto al di sotto del livello 3$, cosa che sembra davvero improbabile. Per questo penso che “l’acquisto sui cali” nel breve periodo continuerà ad essere il tipo di trading prevalente.
Se rompessimo al di sotto del livello 3$, sento che il mercato probabilmente subirebbe un crollo. Ad ogni modo, non è qualcosa che accadrà a breve, da quello che vedo nei grafici.

• Remove50% of the position as profit when the price reaches 20 pips in profit and leave the remainder of the position to ride.
Short Trade 1
• Go short following a bearish price action reversal on the H1 time frame immediately upon the next touch of1.0746.
• Place the stop loss 1 pip above the local swing high.
• Move the stop loss to break even once the trade is 20 pips in profit.

The best method to identify a classic “price action reversal” is for an hourly candle to close, such as a pin bar, a doji, an outside or even just an engulfing candle with a higher close. You can exploit these levels or zones by watching the price action that occurs at the given levels.
EUR/USD Analysis
This pair rose quite strongly, but it was really all due to the sharp rise in the British Pound bringing the Euro along in its wake. The result was a break up above a consolidating triangle and the flipping of resistance at 1.0712 to probable support. The price is now close to a very crucial level at 1.0746 which is confluent with the psychologically important number of 1.0750. This area may now act as strong resistance. There is still no long-term trend, with the price up on 3 months but down over 6 months, so successful trades in either direction are quite possible.

Analisi EUR/USD
Questa coppia è salita in modo molto forte, ma è stato dovuto interamente al brusco aumento della Sterlina inglese, che ha portato con sé anche l’Euro. Il risultato è stata una rottura al di sopra del triangolo di consolidamento e l’inversione della resistenza all’1,0712 in probabile supporto. Ora il prezzo è molto vicino ad un livello davvero cruciale, l’1,0746, che confluisce con l’importante livello psicologico 1,0750. Quest’area ora agisce come forte resistenza. Ancora non c’è un trend nel lungo periodo, con il prezzo che si muove oltre i prezzi di 3 mesi fa, ma al di sotto di quelli di 6 mesi fa. Sono dunque possibili trades profittevoli in entrambe le direzioni.
