El triatlón es un deporte olímpico que se practica sobre distintas
distancias y comprende tres disciplinas de resistencia
realizadas de forma consecutiva, siendo la más popular y
ampliamente reconocida la que combina natación a estilo
libre, ciclismo y carrera a pie1.
En la práctica del triatlón se deben controlar aspectos como
la intensidad en cada segmento, la distribución del esfuerzo,
la ingesta de nutrientes adecuada, y sobre todo, el control
de una buena hidratación2. Para minimizar o evitar los efectos
de la deshidratación, los atletas se deben asegurar de
estar bien hidratados antes, durante y después del ejercicio3.
Así, con el fin de prevenir posibles casos de deshidratación
durante las pruebas que no beneficiarán a los deportistas,
es necesario establecer unas pautas de hidratación4,5.
A pesar de que la práctica de triatlón va en aumento, existen
pocas referencias que muestren los cambios en la composición
corporal y balance hídrico durante la práctica de este
deporte. Se ha mostrado cómo al finalizar un triatlón de larga
distancia (Ironman) los deportistas pierden un 2,3% de
masa corporal6, mostrándose perdidas mayores en lugares
con una mayor temperatura y humedad relativa.
Roger et al. concretaron, en un estudio realizado en un
triatlón que consistió en 21km de piragüismo, 97km de
ciclismo y 42km de carrera a pie, que la pérdida de masa
corporal fue de 1,9% aproximadamente y correspondía a la
tasa de sudoración (TS), producción de orina y pérdida de
agua por la respiración7. Las ganancias de agua exógenas y
endógenas sustituyeron cerca de un 90% de agua corporal
total (ACT) perdida, por lo que es importante reponer
los líquidos perdidos adecuadamente, ya que puede
verse afectado tanto la salud como el rendimiento de los triatletas7,8.

The triathlon is an Olympic sport comprising three consecutively completed endurance disciplines across varying distances. The most popular and widely known triathlon combines free-style swimming, cycling, and running1.
During a triathlon, factors must be monitored such as intensity during each component, effort distribution, adequate nutrient intake, and, above all, proper hydration control2. To minimize or avoid the effects of dehydration, athletes must ensure that they are well-hydrated before, during, and after exercise3. Thus, to prevent possible dehydration detrimental to an athlete in competition, hydration guidelines must be established4 5.
Although triathlons are increasingly common, few sources document changes in body composition and water balance in athletes practicing this sport. Evidence indicates that when completing a long distance triathlon (e.g. the Ironman), athletes lose 2.3% of their body mass, showing greater losses in locations with higher temperatures and relative humidity6.
Roger et al. confirmed in the study of a triathlon consisting of 21 km of canoeing, 97 km of cycling, and 42 km of running, that approximate body mass loss was 1.9% and corresponded to sweat rate, urine production, and loss of water through respiration7. Exogenous and endogenous water gains replaced approximately 90% of the Total Body Water (TBW) lost, demonstrating the importance of adequately replacing fluids. Source text - Spanish Desde mi ventana alcanzo a ver gran parte de la ciudad. Pero hace mucho que la ciudad dejó de interesarme.
Me entretengo mirando el colegio, aquí al lado. La rutina de siempre: a las ocho, el bullicio de la entrada; a las diez el estruendo del recreo; las horas tranquilas durante las clases; la salida impaciente a las tres. Después, el silencio. Por las noches, el colegio parece un gran barco abandonado.
Pero hace tres días, todo cambió. Los adultos se fueron, comenzó la toma y los alumnos hicieron del colegio su cuartel. Por las noches el barco se llena de luces y de voces, de murmullos y carreras.
Y hay uno, Nicolás, que vaga solitario, como perdido. Y escribe. Ahora mismo lo alcanzo a divisar en la sala 6 con el cuaderno abierto.
Viernes
TERCER DÍA EN TOMA
Acabamos de salir de la última reunión de hoy. Nos pasamos el día en reuniones; es una especie de enfermedad que no sé si podré soportar. Escribo desde mi saco de dormir, en la Sala 6 del segundo piso. Aquí es más tranquilo que abajo donde la mayoría duerme hacinada en la Sala 2, entre la “cocina” y la “enfermería”. Es decir, entre las salas que decidieron servirían para preparar la comida (bastante escasa y mala a estas alturas) y para curar a los enfermos y heridos (que no ha habido ninguno).
En estos tres días de toma el colegio ha cambiado y los alumnos también. Están las sillas amontonadas afuera, las mesas pegadas a las ventanas, sacos de dormir en el suelo. Y aunque la mayoría anda todavía de uniforme, se ven distintos, o yo los veo distintos.
Los del Centro de Alumnos se prepararon para la toma y durante la semana pasada trajeron secretamente sacos de arroz, paquetes de tallarines, latas de atún y salsa de tomate. Pero las reservas se agotan y ya no dan para alimentarnos. Podríamos mejorar nuestra dieta si tuviéramos acceso al casino del colegio. Daría cualquier cosa por unas galletas de chocolate o por unas barras de cereal. O simplemente por una bolsita de azúcar. Petrosi, el encargado de la cocina, pasó ese detalle por alto: no tenemos ni un gramo de azúcar.
Sin embargo, el casino está bien cerrado con reja y candados. Fuimos varios los que hoy, tras la escuálida cena, propusimos, una vez más, romper la reja y entrar. “Nada de saqueos”, dijeron los del Centro de Alumnos. “No por ahora”, agregaron conciliadores. “Debemos dar una imagen intachable”, concluyeron. El rumor es que como Aldo es el hijo del dueño del casino, y como también forma parte de la Directiva del Centro de Alumnos, no se atreven a dar la orden. Pero falta poco, digo yo por lo bajo, hambriento.
En la “enfermería”, dos chicas de tercero medio pasan allí el día, limándose las uñas y arreglándose el pelo. Se hacen trenzas, se tiñen el pelo y se maquillan. Ofrecen sus servicios de peluquería a las demás niñas, pero hasta el momento solo sus melenas son las que han pasado de café oscuro a un rojo verdoso bastante extraño. Los del Centro les repiten que se pueden hacer turnos, que no es necesario que estén ellas hacienda guardia a todas horas. Pero ambas resoplan: dicen que como van a estudiar medicina son las que están mejor preparadas. En la pizarra escriben algunas recetas: “Antes de atender una herida, hay que limpiarse las manos con alcohol”. O frases misteriosas, como “Nunca se sabe lo que puede tener un herido”.
La que más me gusta es la Receta para la Rehidratación, escrita en un costado de la pizarra y que no borran nunca:

I entertain myself by watching the school next door. The same routine as always: at 8, the bustle of entering; at 10, the thunder of recess; the tranquil hours during classes; the impatient departure at 3. After, silence. At night the school is like a great abandoned ship.
But three days ago everything changed. The adults left, the occupation began, and the students made the school their headquarters. At night the ship is full of lights and voices, murmurs and rushing around.
And there’s one boy, Nicolás, who wanders alone as if lost. And he writes. At this very moment I can just make him out in Room 6 with his notebook open.
Friday
THIRD DAY OF THE OCCUPATION
We just got out of the last meeting of the day. We spend the day in meetings. It’s a sort of disease I don’t know if I can stand. I’m writing from my sleeping bag in Room 6 on the second floor. It’s quieter here than downstairs where most people are piled into Room 2 between the “kitchen” and the “infirmary.” That is to say, between the rooms they decided would be for making food—very limited and bad at this point—and to cure the sick and injured—of which we’ve had zero.
During these three days of occupation the school has changed and the students too. Chairs are stacked outside, tables against the windows, sleeping bags on the floor. And even though most students are still in their uniforms, they look different. Or maybe I see them differently.
The Student Council prepared for the occupation, and last week they secretly brought in bags of rice, packages of noodles, and cans of tuna and tomato sauce. But the stash has been used up and now there’s nothing much to eat. We could improve our diet if we had access to the school cafeteria. I would give anything for some chocolate cookies or some cereal bars. Or even for a little packet of sugar. Petrosi, the guy in charge of the kitchen, overlooked that detail. We don’t even have a gram of sugar.
The cafeteria is padlocked, anyway. Today—after a terrible dinner—a bunch of us proposed again that we break into the cafeteria. “No stealing,” the Student Council said. “Not for now,” some sympathizers added. “We should have a flawless image,” they concluded. The rumor is that since Aldo’s dad is the head of the cafeteria, and since he’s part of the Student Council Board, they wouldn’t dare give the go-ahead.
“But not for long,” I said quietly, hungry.
Two girls from the 11th grade spend the day in the “infirmary” filing their nails and fixing their hair. They dye their hair, they braid their hair and they put on makeup. They’ve offered their hairstyling services to the rest of the girls, but so far they’re the only ones whose hair has gone from dark brown to a very strange greenish-red. The Council keeps telling them they can take turns—that it’s not necessary for them to be the ones standing guard all day. But they both get huffy and say that since they’re the ones who are going to study medicine, they’re the most prepared. On the chalkboard they write directions: “Before attending to a wound, you must wash your hands with rubbing alcohol.” Or they write mysterious expressions like “You never know what an injury may have.”
My favorite is the Recipe for Rehydration written on a side of the board that they never erase.
