Source text - English Uterine fibroids are typically diagnosed by pelvic exam or vaginal ultrasound by a gynaecologist.
There are three different types of uterine fibroids, depending on where they are located within the uterus:
1. Subserosal fibroids develop on the outer surface of the uterus, growing outward. They don’t typically affect menstrual flow, or cause excessive menstrual bleeding, but can cause pain due to pressure on other organs.
2. Intramural fibroids develop inside the uterine wall, causing it to expand. This uterine growth can be mistaken for weight gain or pregnancy. This is the most common form of fibroid, with symptoms including heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic and back pain, frequent urination and pelvic pressure.
3. Submucosal fibroids develop within the uterine cavity and can cause excessive menstrual bleeding along with prolonged menstrual cycles. These are the least common form.
