Sony confirms custom AMD RDNA 2 graphic processor, solid state drive and innovative 3D audio – without showing the new console

Sony has revealed the full technical specifications of its PlayStation 5 console.
In a blogpost, followed by a lengthy online technical briefing by lead system architect Mark Cerny, the company confirmed that the machine will feature custom versions of AMD’s Zen 2 central processor and RDNA 2 graphics unit, the latter operating at 10.28 Tflops. System memory will be 16GB. The machine will support advanced visual effects such as real-time ray tracing and will have a solid state drive (SSD).
The major news from the Cerny briefing concerned the console’s use of variable frequencies in its CPU and GPU, depending on workload. Usually the heat-generating components of a console or computer are locked at a maximum frequency to ensure the system doesn’t overheat, but the PS5 will allow the GPU and CPU to vary frequency of operation, employing AMD’s SmartShift technology to lend power to each other when games need it. The Xbox Series X graphics core is locked to 1.825GHz, but the PS5 will be able to reach 2.23GHz, suggesting the possibility of a boost in graphics capabilities in Sony’s machine.
Like Xbox Series X, the PlayStation 5 will also feature a build in SSD rather than a hard disk drive. This will mean much faster boot and loading times for games, as well as a reduction of loading times within game environments. While the Xbox Series X will include a larger capacity drive at 1tb, the PS5’s 825GB model is promising faster throughput, with 5.5GB/s as opposed to 2.4GB/s on Microsoft’s machine. PS5 will also offer an expansion slot so that users are able to plug in a secondary SSD.
Cerny also reiterated Sony’s support for advanced 3D sound, and revealed PlayStation 5’s Tempest 3D Audio engine, which he claimed should be able to support hundreds of in-game sound sources to boost the player’s sense of presence and locality. An example he gave was that, if a player is caught in the rain, the engine would recreate the sounds of individual raindrops landing around the player, rather than simply playing a stock rain sound effect. The 3D sound system will be implemented for headphones at first, but Sony is working on supporting surround sound and virtual surround sound systems.
Although both PS5 and Xbox Series X have similar innards, with both opting for AMD Zen 2 CPUs and AMD RDNA 2 graphics processors, there are significant differences in approach to architecture and system operations. From this early stage, it looks like Microsoft is going for raw but regulated power with the next Xbox, its GPU offering 12.16Tflops via 52 computer units, compared to PS5’s 36 compute units, at 10.28Tflops. Microsoft also revealed its Xbox Velocity Architecture for streaming game assets from the SSD to the screen, which promises to make 100GB of game content instantly available at any time to the developer, for richer, more detailed worlds. However, Sony’s variable frequency approach to managing power between the CPU and GPU may reap performance rewards – as long as developers utilise it in the way Sony plans.
One area Xbox Series X definitely seems to be ahead is in backwards compatibility. Microsoft has confirmed the machine will be able to play games from each previous generation of the machine, while Sony is only currently talking about backwards compatibility with PS4 titles, and even then, only a selection of them. It claims to have tested compatibility with the Top 100 PS4 games, getting most to work on the new system, but there was a lack of clarity on whether or not PS3 or earlier games would be made available and whether there would be any boost to visuals or performance. Microsoft, on the other hand, has told gaming tech site Digital Foundry that certain Xbox One games will benefit from new visual features when running on Xbox Series X, including high dynamic range (HDR) lighting effects.
The one major omission was any word on what the PlayStation 5 will actually look like. While the form factor of the Xbox Series X has been revealed, Sony is yet to show even a mock-up of the PS5. This is likely to come with another online event later in the year.

A Sony revelou todas as especificações de seu console PlayStation 5.
Em uma postagem em seu blog, seguida por um longo relatório técnico online do arquiteto de sistema chefe, Mark Cerny, a empresa confirmou que o produto apresentará versões personalizadas do processador central Zen 2 e da unidade gráfica RDNA 2 da AMD, esta última operando a
10,28 Tflops. A memória do sistema será de 16 Gb.
O console será compatível com efeitos visuais avançados, como ray tracing em tempo real, e terá uma unidade de estado sólido (SSD).
A maior novidade no relatório de Cerny diz respeito ao uso de frequências variáveis na CPU e na GPU do console, dependendo da carga de trabalho.
Normalmente, os componentes geradores de calor de um console ou computador são travados em uma frequência máxima para garantir que o sistema não se superaqueça, mas o PS5 permitirá que a GPU e a CPU variem em frequência de operação, empregando a tecnologia SmartShift da AMD para compartilhar energia entre si quando os jogos precisarem.
A principal placa de vídeo do Xbox Series X é travada em 1,825 GHz, mas o PS5 poderá chegar a 2,23 GHz, o que sugere a possibilidade de uma melhoria nos recursos gráficos no produto da Sony.

I started working with translations when I was still finishing my graduation in Languages (English & Portuguese), in 2009. Then, I worked both as a trainee for big companies and as a freelance translator. In 2011, I started to work as a regular translator in a translator agency, and in 2012 I1ve started working exclusively as a freelancer. Also, in 2012 I've finished a post-graduation course focused on Translation (English) and my final essay was about game localization for Brazilian markets. In 2016, I finish another post-graduation course on Translation, this time focused on Spanish. During this period, the major texts I worked with were from the IT, games, and health areas. I have translated several tutorials, websites, marketing material, apps, and so on. I have a large interest in the areas of Literature and Games.
