English to Spanish: The Role of the Art Museum General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting
Source text - English Fine art has historically influenced, and continues to influence, (even if the ways in which this influence operates aren't always evident) the daily lives of people of all social classes and educational backgrounds.
Art carries powerful messages and critiques of our collectively experienced reality, reflecting society’s greatest accomplishments or admonishing its most bitter failings. At its bravest, art can challenge society's core assumptions and seek to force self-reflection.
When an individual interprets a work of art, he or she contributes to the creation of new meaning around this art, and a complex and far-reaching communicational process begins. This process will lead to the penetration of art into different levels of discourse that will in turn affect thought far outside of the art world.
Nevertheless, the pertinence of art for all citizens does not mean that a certain professional skill is not required to properly preserve, store, and display art; or that to fully grasp what is trying to be communicated and to participate in the meaning-creation process there isn't a certain intellectual competence in play. Precisely here is where lies the importance of the art museum. It is the role of an art museum to make artistic culture, the interpretation of which might require certain information and analytical tools, available to people of all social groups, so that art becomes physically, and symbolically, accessible.

Translation education
Bachelor's degree - Université de Montréal
Experience
Years of experience: 17. Registered at ProZ.com: Aug 2010.
Having grown up in a Spanish-speaking family (with multilingual parents), within an Anglo community in the mountains of Costa Rica, translation has always been a part of my life. Aside from my two native languages, English and Spanish, I've developed perfect fluency in French through prolonged periods of study and residence in France and Quebec. This culminated with a Bachelors degree in Comparative Literature and Philosophy from Université de Montréal in 2009.
I recently sought, due to my love for language, an internship at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City where I am currently doing editing and translation work for the publications department.
I am familiar with the prescriptions of the Chicago Manual of Style but can accommodate to others if need be. Spanish is of course always regulated by the Real Academia Espanola.
