Introduction
After the Y2K hysteria and since the dot-com slowdown, financial institutions have been going through a transitional period with their IT investments.
Some institutions are in a continuous acquisition mode, expanding into new markets or products, or both.
Still other institutions are using this period to better assimilate recent investments and to reconcile their IT spending priorities with their business strategy.
During this transition, many bank IT organizations have faced several conflicting challenges:
they must contain costs, manage increasing complexity, and adapt to changing business requirements.
Over the past year, some bank executives have hesitated in developing strategic IT initiatives, particularly as regulatory requirements have created some uncertainty about priorities in boardrooms and at industry conferences.
Institutions with primarily a retail focus have been less affected, while corporate bankers have borne the brunt of the issues surrounding corporate implosions (for example, Enron, Worldcom, and Parmalat).
The purpose of this white paper is to engage both business and IT executives at banks in a dialogue about how they address their institution’s vision of the future.

Meeting Banking’s Business Requirements
What is the downside to an institution if its management puts strategic initiatives on hold for a year or two?
This age-old question never goes away for some institutions.
Other institutions revisit the question whenever there is an earnings shortfall for whatever reason.
Regardless of the economic and regulatory climates, institutions should be actively evaluating and prioritizing their strategic initiatives and the role IT should play.
This task is too important to postpone or treat in a “business as usual” manner.

XXXXXXX surveyed banks in North America, Europe, and Asia Pacific during the fourth quarter of 2003 to determine their key business drivers for 2004. Our findings concluded that the key business drivers (see Table 1) center around three basic themes:
cost, regulations, and the competitive marketplace.
Most of the surveyed institutions cited the following initiatives as their most important ones for 2004:
Infrastructure, back office, and reporting for cost-related reasons;
Compliance and risk management for regulatory reasons; and
Customer management, performance management, and front-office initiatives for market-related reasons.
Banks Can Put Theory into Action
Given these drivers and initiatives, the answers to the two questions at the beginning of this paper are now positioned for their relevance to bankers.
Clearly, improving productivity and controlling costs with high reliability are desirable objectives for any bank.
The Nome_Piattaforma has an enviable record of productivity and reliability, proven over two decades.

Nel quarto trimestre del 2003, XXXXXXX ha svolto un'indagine presso il management di banche nordamericane, europee e della regione Asia-Pacifico, allo scopo di individuare i principali fattori che supportano gli obiettivi aziendali per il 2004. Le conclusioni di tali indagini sono che tali principali fattori trainanti (v. Tab. 1) ruotano attorno a tre temi fondamentali:
costi, normative e mercato molto competitivo.
La maggior parte degli intervistati citano le seguenti iniziative come le più importanti per le loro banche per il 2004:
infrastruttura, back office e redazione di report per motivi legati ai costi;
conformità alle normative e gestione del rischio relativo; e infine:
gestione clientela, gestione delle performance e iniziative front-office per ragioni legate al mercato.
Passaggio dalla teoria alla pratica
Dati questi fattori trainanti e date queste iniziative, possiamo ora dare le risposte alle due domande poste all'inizio di questo articolo, procedendo in base alla loro rilevanza per i dirigenti delle banche.

Introduction
Pills are formed when fibres on a fabric surface "tease out" and become entangled during wear.

Examples of extreme situations are found in fabrics containing strong fibres versus fabric containing weak fibres.
A consequence of the strong fibre is a rate of pill formation that exceeds the rate of wear-off. This results in an increase of pilling with an increase of wear.
With a weak fibre the rate of pill formation competes with the rate of wear-off. This would result in a fluctuation of pilling with an increase of wear.
There are other constructions that the surface fibre wear-off occurs before pill formation.
Each of these examples demonstrates the complexity of evaluating the surface change on different types of fabric.
The ideal laboratory test would accelerate the wear processes a), b) and c) by exactly the same factor and would be universally applicable to all fibre, yarn and fabric types.
No such test has been developed. However, a test procedure has been established in which fabrics can be ranked in the same order of fuzzing and pilling propensity ss is likely to occur in end-use wear.
The modification to the very widely adopted Martindale abrasion testing machine on which this part of ISO 12945 is based is described in a publication by H. Knecht: Neue Methode zur Prüfung der Pillingneigung, in Wirkerei und Strickerei Technik, 38 (1988), 12, p. 1309.

This part of ISO 12945 specifies a method for determination of the resistance to pilling and surface change of textile fabrics using a modified Martindale method.

3. Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this part of ISO 12945 the following terms and definitions apply.
3.1 Fuzzing
Roughing up of the surface fibres and/or teasing out of the fibres from the fabric, producing a visible surface change

3.2 pills
Entangling of fibres into balls (pills) which stand proud of the fabric and are of such density that light will not penetrate and will cast a shadow

4 Principle
A circular test specimen is passed over a friction surface comprising the same fabric or, when relevant, a wool abradant fabric, at a defined force in the form of a Lissajous figure, with the test specimen able to rotate easily around an axis through its centre, perpendicular to the plane of the test specimen.
Fuzzing and pilling are assessed visually after defined stages of rub testing..
5 Apparatus
5.1 Martindale abrasion testing machine, as described in ISO 12947-1, modified in accordance with 5.2.
The test apparatus consists of a base plate carrying the pilling tables and drive mechanism.
The drive mechanism consists of two outer drives and an inner drive which cause the specimen holder guide piate to trace a Lissajous figure.
The specimen holder guide plate ts moved horizontally by the drive mechanism in such a way that every point of the guide plate describes the same Lissajous figure.
The Lissajous movement changes from a circle to gradually narrowing ellipses, until it becomes a straight line, from which progressively widening ellipses develop in a diagonally opposite direction before the pattern is repeated.
The specimen holder guide plate is fitted with bearing housings and low friction bearings which carry the specimen holder guide spindles.
The lower end of each specimen holder spindle is inserted into each corresponding specimen holder body.
The specimen holder consists of a body, specimen holder ring and optional loading weight.
The apparatus is fitted with a pre-settable counting device which measures each revolution of one of the outer drives.
Each revolution is taken as a pilling rub and sixteen revolutions as a complete Lissajous figure.
5.2 Drive and base plate attachments
5.2.1 Drive.
Movement of the specimen holder guide plate carrying the specimen holder bearing housings and bearings and consequently the specimen holders themselves is performed by the following units:
a) two outer synchronised drive units with the distance of the axis of the drive units from their central axis of (12 ±0,25) mm;
b) Central drive unit, with the distance of the axis of the drive unit from its central axis of (12 ± 0,25) mm.
The maximum stroke of the specimen holder guide plate in both the length and traverse directions is (24 + 0,5) mm.
5.2.2 Counter, for counting the pilling rubs and measures to an accuracy of 1 rub.

Introduzione

Quando invece la fibra è debole, la velocità di formazione delle palline è in competizione con la velocità di asportazione; ciò si traduce in un andamento fluttuante del pilling man mano che il capo viene indossato.
Vi solo poi altri tipi di tessuto in cui l'asportazione della fibra superficiale si verifica prima della formazione delle palline.
Questi tre esempi di situazioni "al limite" dimostrano quanto sia complessa la valutazione delle modifiche della superficie su diversi tipi di tessuto.
Il test ideale di laboratorio dovrebbe fare in modo che vengano accelerati nella stessa misura i processi di usura (a), (b) e (c) e dovrebbe essere applicabile a tutti tipi di fibre, filati e stoffe.

3. Termini e definizioni

4 Principio
Un provino circolare viene fatto passare su una superficie di attrito costituita dallo stesso tessuto o, se è il caso, da un tessuto abradente di lana, con una pressione di contatto predefinita, in modo che vengano descritte delle figure di Lissajous, con il provino che è in grado di ruotare agevolmente attorno a un asse passante per il suo centro e perpendicolare al piano del provino stesso.
Il fuzzing e il pilling vengono valutati dopo un numero determinato di prove di sfregamento.
5 Apparecchiatura
5.1 Macchina di abrasione di Martindale, così come viene descritta in ISO 12947-1, modificata in accordo con 5.2.
L'apparecchiatura utilizzata per le prove è costituita da una piastra di base che sostiene le tavole di pilling e il meccanismo di trasmissione del movimento.
Tale meccanismo è costituito da due organi di trasmissione esterni e un organo di trasmissione interno, che fanno sì che la piastra di guida del portaprovino descriva delle figure di Lissajous.
La piastra di guida del portaprovino viene spostata in senso orizzontale dal meccanismo di trasmissione del movimento, in modo tale che ogni punto della suddetta piastra di guida descriva le medesime curve di Lissajous.
Il movimento di descrizione delle figure di Lissajous, inizialmente circolare, diventa ellittico, con le ellissi che diventano gradualmente sempre più strette, fino a diventare una linea retta; a questo punto vengono descritte delle ellissi sempre più larghe, ma lungo la diagonale opposta, sino a formare un cerchio. A questo punto il ciclo si ripete.
La piastra di guida del portaprovino è dotata di alloggiamenti con cuscinetti e cuscinetti a basso attrito che supportano gli alberini di guida del portaprovino.
L'estremità inferiore di ciascun alberino è inserita nel corpo del portaprovino corrispondente.
Il portaprovino è costituito da un corpo, un anello e, eventualmente, da un peso.

5.2.1 Organo di trasmissione.
Il movimento della piastra di guida del portaprovino, che sostiene gli alloggiamenti dei cuscinetti e i cuscinetti del portaprovino, e, di conseguenza, i portaprovini stessi, viene effettuato mediante:
a) 2 organi di trasmissione esterni sincronizzati, con una distanza dell'asse dell'organo di trasmissione rispetto al suo asse centrale pari a (12 ± 0,25) mm;
b) un organo di trasmissione centrale, con una distanza dell'asse di detto organo rispetto al suo asse centrale pari a (12 ± 0,25) mm.
