ii SURFING SYMBOL OF FLOW AND COMPLEXITY
a. Philosophie

ii. SURFING: SYMBOL OF FLOW AND COMPLEXITY
The sport of surfing has a bearing on several fields of knowledge. The complexity of life and social organizations are the centre of contemporary debates. The world’s limited resources, globalization and new advanced technologies lead us to question the future prospects for mankind on a planet menaced by an exponential population growth, the consequently increasing poverty in the poorest countries, and the major ecological threat as a result of global warming caused by atmospheric pollution.
Experts in all fields try to measure the likely effects of these upheavals and formulate new concepts for a different comprehension of the world, involving new communication tools, new modes of organization and management in order to meet these challenges.
a. Philosophy
Deleuze was the first to discuss the relationship between surfing and philosophy. In Deleuze’s ABCD, he says that what pleased him most after the publication of PLI2 was not the letters he received from academics but the one he had from a surfers’ club. Deleuze has an artistic and poetic line of thought that concentrates on the aesthetic phenomenon rather than on moral or religious concepts. He thus emphasises the importance of sensations3. In “Nietsche and philosophy” Deleuze defines the tragic as a multiple joy, with which we can liken to the image of the surfer who plays dangerously with the waves where a fall can be fatal.
As Deleuze puts it: “The difficulty in philosophy is how to acquire a consistency without losing the infinite into which thought plunges (the chaos in this respect has a mental as much as a physical existence)”4. Deleuze has expressed on several occasions his keen interest in the sport of surfing. In surfing as in life, individuals are confronted with unpredictable events which makes both life and surfing so rich. In this context it is the waves which one must choose with the best potential in terms of strength and shape that will provide for the best note. Mobility is a temporal, spatial and “productive” activity providing the opportunity to formulate new concepts related to existence. With regards to surfing, this is about formulating the optimum reaction of the surfer according to his/her ability in relation to the characteristics of the chosen wave. According to Deleuze, the production of events involves speed and slowness, be it the mobility of intelligence or of desire. In fact, the surfer tries to organise the chaos (as a proposition), to design the best trajectories with originality and give the spectators a new vision of the environment.
