Hasta en la manía de poner sobrenombres a las personas, Ángel Arturo se parece a Labuelo; fue él quien bautizó a este último y al gato, con el mismo nombre. Es una satisfacción pensar que Labuelo sufrió en carne propia lo que sufrieron otros por culpa de él. A mí me puso Tacho, a mi hermano Pingo y a mi cuñada Chica, para humillarla, pero Ángel Arturo lo marcó a él para siempre con el nombre de Labuelo. Este de algún modo proyectó sobre el vástago inocente, rasgos, muecas, personalidad: fue la última y la más perfecta de sus venganzas.
En la casa de la calle Tacuarí vivíamos mi hermano y yo, hasta que fuimos mayores, en una sola habitación. La casa era enorme, pero no convenía que ocupáramos, según opinaba Labuelo, distintos dormitorios. Teníamos que estar incómodos, para ser hombres. Mi cama, detalle inexplicable, estaba arrimada al ropero. Asimismo nuestra habitación, se transformaba, los días de semana, en taller de costura de una gitana que reformaba, para nosotros, camisas deformes, y los domingos en depósito de empanadas y pastelitos (que la cocinera, por orden de Labuelo, no nos permitía probar) para regalos destinados a dos o tres señoras del vecindario.
Para mal de mis pecados, yo era zurdo. Cuando en la mano izquierda tomaba el lápiz para escribir, o empuñaba el cuchillo, a la hora de las comidas, para cortar carne, Labuelo me daba una bofetada y me mandaba a la cama sin comer. Llegué a perder dos dientes a fuerza de golpes y, por esa penitencia, a debilitarme tanto, que en verano, con abrigos de invierno, temblaba de frío. Para curarme, Labuelo me dejó pasar toda una noche bajo la lluvia, en camisón, descalzo sobre las baldosas. Si no he muerto, es por-que Dios es grande o porque somos más fuertes de lo que creemos.
Sólo después del casamiento de Arturo (mi hermano), ocupamos, él y yo, diferentes habitaciones. Por una ironía de la suerte lograba con mi desdicha lo que tanto había esperado: un cuarto propio. Arturo ocupó una habitación, en los fondos más inhospitalarios de la casa, con su mujer (se me hiela la sangre cuando lo digo, como si no me hubiera habituado) y yo, otra, que daba, con sus balcones de estuco y de mármol, a la calle. Por razones misteriosas, no se podía entrar en un cuarto de baño que estaba junto a mi dormitorio; en consecuencia, yo tenía que atravesar, para ir al baño, dos patios. Por culpa de esas manías, para no helarme de frío en invierno o para no pasar junto a la habitación de mi hermano casado, orinando o jabonándome las orejas, las manos o los pies debajo del grifo, quemé dos plantas de jazmines que nadie regaba, salvo yo.
Pero volveré a recordar mi infancia, que si no fue alegre, fue menos sombría que mi pubertad. Durante mucho tiempo creyeron que Labuelo era portero de la casa. A los siete años yo mismo lo creía. En una entrada lujosa, con puerta cancel, donde brillaban vidrios azules como zafiros y rojos como rubíes, un hombre, sentado en una silla de Viena, leyendo siempre algún diario, en mangas de camisa y pantalón de fantasía raído, no podía ser sino el portero. Labuelo vivía sentado en aquel zaguán, para impedirnos salir o para fiscalizar el motivo de nuestras salidas. Lo peor de todo es que dormía con los ojos abiertos: aun roncando, sumido en el más profundo de los sueños, veía lo que hacíamos o lo que hacían las moscas, a su alrededor. Burlarlo era difícil, por no decir imposible. A veces nos escapábamos por el balcón. Un día mi hermano recogió un perro perdido, y para no afrontar responsabilidades, me lo regaló. Lo escondimos detrás del ropero. Sus ladridos pronto me delataron. Labuelo, de un balazo, le reventó la cabeza, para probar su puntería y mi debilidad. No contento con este acto me obligó a pasar la lengua por el sitio donde el perro había dormido.
-Los perros en la perrera, en las jaulas o en el otro mundo -solía decir.
Sin embargo, en el campo, cuando salía a caballo, una jauría que manejaba a puntapiés o a rebencazos, iba a la zaga. Otro día, al saltar del balcón a la acera durante la siesta, me recalqué un tobillo. Labuelo me divisó desde su puesto. No dijo nada, pero a la hora de la cena, me hizo subir por la escalera de mano que comunicaba con la azotea, para acarrear ladrillos amontonados, hasta que me desmayé. ¿Para qué amontonaba ladrillos?
La riqueza de nuestra familia no se advertía sino en detalles incongruentes: en bóvedas, con columnas de mármol y estatuas, en bodegas bien surtidas, en legados que iban pasando de generación en generación, en álbumes de cuero repujado,., con retratos célebres de familia; en un sinfín de sirvientes, todos jubilados, que traían, de cuando en cuando, huevos frescos, naranjas, pollos o junquillos, de regalo, y en el campo de Azul, cuyos potreros adornaban, en fotografías, las paredes del último patio, donde había siempre jaulas con gallinas, canarios, que nosotros teníamos que cuidar y mesas de hierro con plantas de hojas amarillas, que siempre estaban a punto de morir, como diciendo, mírame y no me toques.
Cuando quise estudiar francés, Labuelo me quemó los libros, porque para él todo libro francés era indecente.
A mi hermano y a mí no nos gustaban los trabajos de campo. A los quince años tuvimos que abandonar la ciudad para enterrarnos en aquella estancia de Azul. Labuelo nos hizo trabajar a la par de los peones, cosa que hubiera resultado divertida si no fuera que se ensañaba en castigarnos porque éramos ignorantes o torpes para cumplir los trabajos.
Nunca tuvimos un traje nuevo: si lo teníamos era de las liquidaciones de las peores tiendas: nos quedaba ajustado o demasiado grande y era de ese color café con leche que nos deprimía tanto; había que usar los zapatos viejos de Labuelo, que eran ya para la basura, con la punta rellena de papel. Tomar café no nos permitían. ¿Fumar? Podíamos hacerlo en el cuarto de baño, encerrados con llave, hasta que Labuelo nos sacó la llave. ¿Mujeres? Conseguíamos siempre las peores y, en el mejor de los casos, podíamos estar con ellas cinco minutos. Bailes, teatros, diversiones, amigos, todo estaba vedado. Nadie podrá creerlo: jamás fui a un corso de carnaval ni tuve una careta en las manos. Vivíamos, en Buenos Aires, como en un claustro, baldeando patios, fregando pisos dos veces por día; en la estancia, como en un desierto, sin agua para bañarnos y sin luz para estudiar, comiendo carne de oveja, galleta y nada más.
-Si tiene tantos dientes sin caries es de no comer dulces -opinaba la gitana que no tenía ninguno.
Labuelo no quería que nos casáramos y de haberlo permitido nuestra vestimenta hubiera sido un serio impedimento para ello. Enfermó de ira por no poder adivinar nuestros secretos de muchachos. ¿Quién no tiene novia en aquella edad? Labuelo se escondió debajo de mi cama para oírnos hablar a mi hermano y a mí, una noche. Hablábamos de Leticia. ¿La sordera o la maldad le hizo pensar que ella era la amante de mi hermano? Nunca lo sabré. Al moverse, para no ser visto, se le enganchó parte de la barba a una bisagra del armario donde tenía apoyada la cabeza, y dio un gruñido que en aquel momento de intimidad nos dejó aterrados. Al ver que estaba a cuatro patas, como un animal cualquiera, no le perdí el miedo, pero sí el respeto, para siempre.
Amenazado por el juez y por los padres de Leticia que había quedado embarazada, en una de nuestras más inolvidables excursiones a Palermo, en bañadera, mi hermano tuvo que casarse. Nadie quiso escuchar razones. Por un extraño azar, Leticia no confesó que yo era el padre del hijo que iba a nacer. Quedé soltero. Sufrí ese atropello como una de las tantas fatalidades de mi vida. ¿Llegó a parecerme natural que Leticia durmiera con mi hermano? De ningún modo natural, pero sí obligatorio e inevitable.
En los primeros tiempos de mi desventura, le dejaba cartas encendidas debajo del felpudo de la puerta o esperaba que saliera de su cuarto para dirigirle dos o tres palabras, pero el terror de ser descubierto y Ángel Arturo que nos espiaba, paralizaron mis ímpetus.
Cuando Ángel Arturo nació, oh vanas ilusiones, creíamos que todo iba a cambiar. Como carecía de barbas y anteojos, no advertíamos que era el retrato de Labuelo. En la cuna celeste, el llanto de la criatura ablandó un poquito nuestros corazones. Fue una ilusión convencional. Mimábamos, sin embargo, al niño, lo acariciábamos. Cuando cumplió tres años, era ya un hombrecito. Lo fotografiaron en los brazos de Labuelo.
En la casa todo era para Ángel Arturo. Labuelo no le negaba nada, ni el teléfono que no nos permitía utilizar más de cinco minutos, a las ocho de la mañana, ni el cuarto de baño clausurado, ni la luz eléctrica de los veladores, que no nos permitía encender después de las doce de la noche. Si pedía mi reloj o mi lapicera fuente para jugar, Labuelo me obligaba a dárselos. Perdí, de ese modo, reloj y lapicera. ¡Quién me regalará otros!
El revólver, descargado, con mango de marfil, que Labuelo guardaba en el cajón del escritorio, también sirvió de juguete para Ángel Arturo. La fascinación que el revólver ejerció sobre él, le hizo olvidar todos los otros objetos. Fue una dicha en aquellos días oscuros.
Cuando descubrimos por primera vez a Ángel Arturo jugando con el revólver, los tres, mi hermano, Leticia y yo, nos miramos pensando seguramente en lo mismo. Sonreímos. Ninguna sonrisa fue tan compartida ni elocuente.
Al día siguiente uno de nosotros compró en la juguetería un revólver de juguete (no gastábamos en juguetes, pero en ese revólver gastamos una fortuna): así fuimos familiarizando a Ángel Arturo con el arma, haciéndolo apuntar contra nosotros.
Cuando Ángel Arturo atacó a Labuelo con el revólver verdadero, de un modo magistral (tan inusitado para su edad) este último rió como si le hicieran cosquillas. Desgraciadamente, por grande que fuera la habilidad del niño en apuntar y oprimir el gatillo, el revólver estaba descargado.
Corríamos el riesgo de morir todos, pero ¿qué era ese nimio peligro comparado con nuestra actual miseria? Pasamos un momento feliz, de unión entre nosotros. Teníamos que cargar el revólver: Leticia prometió hacerlo antes de la hora en que nieto y abuelo jugaban a los bandidos o a la cacería. Leticia cumplió su palabra.
En el cuarto frío (era el mes de julio), tiritando, sin mirarnos, esperamos la detonación, mientras fregábamos el piso, porque se había inundado, junto con Buenos Aires, el aljibe del patio. Tardó aquello más que toda nuestra vida. ¡Pero aun lo que más tarda llega! Oímos la detonación. Fue un momento feliz para mí, al menos.
Ahora, Ángel Arturo tomó posesión de esta casa y nuestra venganza tal vez no sea sino venganza de Labuelo. Nunca pude vivir con Leticia como marido y mujer. Ángel Arturo con su enorme cabeza pegada a la puerta cancel, asistió, victorioso, a nuestras desventuras y al fin de nuestro amor. Por eso y desde entonces lo llamamos Labuelo.
Translation - English The Offspring
Even in the frenzy of name calling, Ángel Arturo resembles Labuelo; he was the last to be baptized with this name, along with the cat. It is satisfying to think that Labuelo experiences first-hand what others suffered because of him. To humiliate us he called me Tacho, my brother Pingo, and my sister-in-law Chica, but Ángel Arturo was always labelled with Labuelo. Somehow, his face, his characteristics and his personality were projected onto the innocent offspring; it was the last and the most perfect of his revenges.
Until we were older, my brother and I shared a bedroom in a house on Calle Tacuarí, Buenos Aires. The house was huge but Labuelo believed it was better if we didn’t have separate rooms. Real men shouldn’t be too comfortable. Inexplicably, my bed was pushed up against the wardrobe. Also, during the week, our room was used as a sewing repair shop by a gypsy who fixed old shirts for us. On Sundays it became a pie and cake storeroom so that Labuelo could give them as gifts to two or three ladies in the neighbourhood. Labuelo had forbidden us from eating the cakes.
For my sins I was left-handed. When I used my left hand to write or to cut meat at dinner Labuelo would slap me and send me to bed without food. As penance to weaken me, he knocked two of my teeth out. In summer I would tremble with fear wearing a winter coat. To cure me, Labuelo left me outside in the rain; barefoot on the floor tiles wearing only a nightshirt. If I didn’t die it is because God is great or because we are stronger than we believe.
It was only after my brother Arturo married that we had separate rooms. It was ironic that through my misfortune, I got what I had always wanted: my own room. Arturo and his wife’s room was in the most inhospitable part of the house and I was in another part, with marble columns and a balcony looking over the street. My blood runs cold when I think of them together. For reasons unknown, I could not use the bathroom next to my bedroom, so I had to cross two courtyards to go to the bathroom. So that I didn’t freeze in winter, or have to pass by my brother’s marital room just to go to the toilet or to have a wash, I killed the jasmine plants that nobody ever watered, except me.
I remember my childhood, not as being happy but it was less bleak than my adolescence. For a long time I believed that Labuelo was the porter of the house. I believed this for seven years. In a luxurious entrance with a glass door that sparkled as blue as sapphires and as red as rubies, sat a man, always reading a newspaper, in his shirtsleeves, wearing worn-out trousers, he could not be the porter. Labuelo spent his life in that hallway, so that he could prevent us from going out or to oversee our outings. The worst part was that he slept with his eyes open; even when he was snoring and dreaming he saw what we did or what the flies around him did. Getting around him was difficult but that is not to say it was impossible. Sometimes we escaped from the balcony. One day my brother brought a lost dog in, and, so that he didn’t have to deal with it he gave it to me as a gift. We hid it behind the wardrobe. It’s barking gave it away. Labuelo blew the dog’s head off with a bullet, testing both my weakness and his aim. Not content with just doing this, he made me lick the spot where the dog had died.
“The dog is in a kennel, in cages or in another world” he would say.
Nevertheless, he left for the country on horseback, whipping and kicking the pack of hounds that were lagging behind. Another day, I sprained my ankle after leaping from the balcony during siesta. Labuelo watched from his seat. He didn’t say anything but at dinner, he made me climb the ladder to pile bricks on the roof, until I fainted. Why did I need to pile bricks on the roof?
The wealth of our family was incongruous : in vaults, with marble columns and statues, well stocked cellars, with inheritances passed from generation to generation, embossed leather albums, full of pictures from family occasions, a host of retired servants who from time to time got fresh eggs, oranges, chickens or tat as gifts and in el campo de Azul whose pastures adorned in photographs, the patio walls, where he always had cages with hens and canaries which we had to look after and iron tables with yellow-leaved plants, which were always about to die, like saying, ‘look at me but do not touch me’.
When I wanted to study French, Labuelo burned my books, because to him, all French books were indecent.
My brother and I did not like fieldwork. At 15 years old we had to leave the city to bury ourselves in that estancia de Azul. Labuelo made us work alongside the farmhands, which would have been funny had we not been at the mercy of their punishment because we were too ignorant or clumsy to carry out the work.
We rarely got new clothes; if we did get them they were bought in the sales in the worst shops and were either too big or too small and were the colour of milky coffee which really depressed us. We had to wear Labuelo’s old shoes, which should have already been thrown out, with paper stuffed in them so that they fit. We weren’t allowed to drink coffee. Smoking? We used to lock ourselves in the bathroom to smoke, until Labuelo took out the lock. Women? We always got the worst women and at the best of times we were only allowed five minutes with them. Dances, theatres, amusements, friends, were all forbidden. No-one could believe it. We never went to carnival parades or held a mask in our hands. We lived in Buenos Aires but it was like living in a monastery, swilling down the patio and scrubbing the floors twice a day, like being in the desert with no water to wash ourselves and without light to study, we ate mutton and hardtack, nothing else.
“If you have so many teeth without cavities it is because you don’t eat sweets” believed the gypsy woman who had nothing.
Labuelo didn’t want us to get married and to have allowed us to wear nice clothes would have been a serious impediment to this. It made us sick with anger that we could not follow our boyhood dreams. After all, who didn’t have a girlfriend nowadays? One night, Labuelo hid under my bed so he could hear my brother and I talking. We were talking about Leticia. I don’t know if it was deafness or wickedness that made him think she was my brother’s lover. We will never know. When leaving the room, never to be seen, he caught his beard on the cupboard door hinge that he had been leaning his head on; his growl left us terrified of intimacy. Seeing him on all fours like an animal didn’t make me fear him less but I did lose all respect for him, forever.
On our most memorable trip to Palermo, Leticia got pregnant on the open-top bus. Threatened by the Judge and Leticia’s parents my brother had to marry her. Nobody would listen to reason. Strangely, Leticia did not confess that I was the father of the unborn child. I will be single forever. I suffered this cruel act as one of the many misfortunes of my life. Did it seem natural that Leticia would sleep with my brother? It was in no way natural but it was mandatory and inevitable.
In the early days of my misery, he left hate mail under the doormat or waited to leave his room to speak two or three words but the terror of being discovered, and Ángel Arturo spied on us, it paralysed my drive.
When Ángel Arturo was born, we thought everything would change, oh what wishful thinking! As he had no beard or glasses we were not aware that he was the spitting image of Labuelo. In his sky blue cot his cries softened our hearts a little. It was a pipe dream. Nevertheless, we doted on him and caressed him. When he was just three years old, he was already a little man. He was photographed in Labuelo’s arms.
Everything in the house was for Ángel Arturo. Labuelo didn’t deny him anything, not even the telephone which he only let us use for five minutes at 8am, nor the locked bathroom door, or the electric bedside lamp which we were forbidden from using after midnight. If he asked for my watch or my fountain pen to play with, Labuelo made me give them to him. I lost them both this way. Who would give me another?
The unloaded gun with its ivory handle which was stored in Labuelo’s desk drawer also served as a toy for Ángel Arturo. The gun fascinated him so much that he forgot about all other objects. It was a joy in those dark days.
When my brother, Leticia and I first found out that Ángel Arturo played with the gun, we all gazed out into the distance, surely thinking the same thing. We smiled. No smile was as shared and ineloquent.
The next day one of us bought a toy gun from the toy shop (we never spent money on toys but that gun cost a fortune). We familiarized Ángel Arturo with the gun, practicing aiming it at us.
When Ángel Arturo masterfully - which was so unusual for his age - attacked Labuelo with the real gun, he laughed as if he was being tickled. Unfortunately, great as was the child’s ability to point and pull the trigger, the gun was unloaded.
We ran the risk of dying but that was insignificant compared to our present misery. We had a happy moment together. We had to load the gun. Leticia promised to do it before grandson and grandfather played cowboy and Indians. She kept her word.
In the cold room (it was July), shivering, not looking at each other, we waited to hear the blast, whilst we scrubbed the floor, because it was flooded, along with Buenos Aires, by the well in the courtyard. It had never taken so long to do – but it was worth the wait! We heard the blast. It was a happy moment, for me at least.
Ángel Arturo owns the house and our revenge now, but perhaps not Labuelo’s revenge. I could never live as husband and wife with Leticia. Ángel Arturo with his enormous head up against the door screen, he victoriously waited for our misfortunes and the end of our love. So, since then we called him Labuelo.
