Hello,

Thomas is correct (thanks for stepping in!), each sender creates the list when selecting freelancers to contact through the Directory. The list can include as little as 1 freelancer, if the client wants to contact a single freelancer found on the directory without visiting their profile, up to 100 freelancers at the same time.

If you visit http://www.proz.com/translator-directory/ and make a search, you will see that each freelancer has a checkbox next to their name. If you check that box, the number next to "Candidates in batch mail list" will increase to show there is one member in that list. That is the list we are referring to here, not a general list. (If you do test this, note that you can later clear the test members in your list by clicking on "Clear List").

To sum it up, this is not a general list, but one created by each potential client before contacting freelancers. That is why blocking specific users from contacting you is a great way to avoid repeat messages from outsourcers who contact you often without also harming the possibility of being contacted directly through the directory by other potential clients.

I hope this explains! If you have any further question, don't hesitate to ask.

Best regards,
Alejandro

I received another one of those emails today from another agency, and not for the first time from that agency either. Since I now know that it is the sender who creates this list (although it is an email list created on Proz.com by checking names on a translator list generated by Proz.com), I will for the moment either ignore them or, if it gets too annoying, first ask the agency to take me off their list and if that doesn't help ask Proz.com to do something about it.

One question Alejandro. You mentioned earlier that individual members can be blocked from sending you emails through Proz.com but Jo seems to think that's not possible. Can you please elaborate on that, specifically with regard to these email lists? And must people creating such lists be Proz.com members (paid? unpaid?) to be able to create such an email list?

Although I don't like that anyone can just mass-email up to 100 colleagues (is that the number?) and word everything exactly like a job posting and will most likely never reply to you when you send them a reasonable answer but contact you again and again with new emails, ...

... I do believe this list can act as another filter mechanism for bad apples. Not what we really envisioned as something we would do here, but at least this would be a more positive way of looking at the issue.

A suggestion - Alejandro? Apr 2, 2016

When an outsourcer creates such an email from the directory, would it be possible for the system to include a one-liner at the top of the email saying something like this:
*The following email was sent to XXX recipients*

or in the subject line:
[sent to XXX recipients]

where XXX is replaced by the number of recipients.
That number is available, as it is automatically counted while selecting the recipients.

What do you think?

I agree that such emails are a nuisance Apr 2, 2016

I get many such emails too, and not only from proz.com.

I have learned to take it as part of life and just ignore them or just deflect them to the trash folder. It just takes a few seconds, and I do this clean-up once or twice a week.

I would hesitate to tweak the profile setting to block such emails, as it is quite possible that 1 in a million such junk email may yield a paying work proposition - I wouldn't want to miss that.

I like the idea.

Competitors to your profile - but in fact it's not that Apr 4, 2016

I don't know if it is a new feature following this thread, but there is info that I hadn't noticed before in the Visitor history:
In the "Visitors" tab (paying users) in your profile, when you click the "Came from" link from the directory (such as Search: Specialty: Electronics / Elect Eng, From: English, To: French), you now have the directory with ticked translators, including you. So it tells you how many competitors you stand against if you check that tab after receiving a mass job request*.
Knowing this and the IP address where the search was performed, you can easily decide how relevant it is to reply to an associated "Proz.com Member" message.

Curiously, all 5 searches in my first page showed 25 recipients including me. Would it be the new maximum allowed (did I read 100 earlier)?

BTW, I liked the embedded IP address link to MelissaData that used to be in force on the Visitors tab to tell you in one click where the search originated from, but it was discontinued some years ago. Now I have to copy-paste the IP address to MelissaData, which is not as convenient.

Philippe

*However, I would think that outsourcers who just tick translators without checking their profiles are not included in the Visitors list. But the lack of entry for that outsourcer (IP address) will also show that they send job requests without even checking to whom!

***EDIT: Well done Thomas below, I did tick boxes as well for "test" purposes... I cleared the list and no tick reappears on any link.
So my post is irrelevant!***

Is it possible that you did a directory search previously and ticked those 25 translators back then? I think it remembers your last selections and shows them again.

I just tried it out with a few of the links on my Visitors tab and I get two ticked translators for each of those – the two translators I selected the other day when (for the purpose of this very thread) I wanted to try out the bulk message feature myself.

I also checked it Apr 4, 2016

with one of the links of my visitors' tab and there was no translator ticked.
I didn't do any directory search previously, so Thomas seems to be right.

This could be a very useful feature though in order to know to how many translators a mail you received has been sent and to judge whether it is worthwile to respond...

I would really very much welcome it!

The info in the Visitor tab is not necessarily linked to any mass email we receive through the directory.
Plus, if we have to jump through hoops to get that sort of info, then it beats the purpose, which is quickly decide to read the email or delete it right away.

I posted a suggestion above - it seems Alejandro has not read it yet - with an idea of an easier solution. The email itself should have that information (the number of recipients) - see above.

Hello,

You can restrict who can contact you by profile message from the Email Preferences page. A link to it is included in every message sent through the Directory. The block lists are located below the general message preferences, so you may have to scroll down a bit to find them.

To clarify, only full members can contact up to 100 freelancers at a time through the Directory. The limit for non-members is 25. Those who are not logged-in to an account cannot send batch emails.

Adding a line to batch messages showing how many recipients it had could be a good idea. Thank you for the suggestion, Katalin!

I hope this explains. Please let me know if you have any further question.

Best regards,

So if you are a member, you can reach more translators. It could be well-meant but in effect it allows many paying-and-cheap agencies to get an even greater pool of willing translators and bother people like me. I will just delete their messages - that way at least one of their 100 emails doesn't find its intended target.
