Diatoms can be used as indicators of past and present environmental conditions in estuaries. This is because many diatom species have clearly defined, and frequently narrow, preferences for particular habitats (e.g. there are open water-planktonic, plant dwelling-epiphytic, fine sediment-epipelic and sand associated-episammic species) and water quality conditions.
