thermal winds/breezes
Explicación:
Caused by the difference in temperature between the land and sea at different times during the day and night. Sea breeze (virazón) occurs during the day when the land is hotter than the sea, causing the heated air to rise and cooler air from the sea to be sucked landwards. Land breeze (terral) occurs at night when the sea releases its heat, the air rises and the wind blows offshore.
Both breezes are coastal but can add to the effect of larger wind patterns causing strong winds at midday. This can often be felt in summer in Spain, the wind rising from a gentle morning breeze to a fresh force 5 or 6 at lunchtime, dropping as the sun sets. to call both "sea breezes" in a sailing context would be incorrect. the quoted phrase is a blatant lie as the only ideal setting for learning to windsurf is a sheltered, enclosed bay. either that or you get up at the crack of dawn, before the sea breeze sets in.

marine activities

Explicación:
the suffix ada in catalan often refers to an activity involving the root

eg. a costellada is an event where you get together with friends, barbecue the chops and then eat them

if the writer is from any of the Paisos Catalans, he may have been influenced by the local tongue when writing in Spanish

you can probably improve on the actual expression, but that's the idea IMHO

Discrepo  Peter Guest: not so. Marinada is a well known term for winds occurring on the coast

Discrepo  Peter Guest: 'fraid not. swell is , ola de fondo, and the precise, though not widely known term, is maretón

-> Thanks, Peter, However, how can one translate a 'blatant lie'? Would it be possible to windsurf with a slight swell? Being used to the open Atlantic, I can't imagine sea without at least a slight swell. I'm also no expert, as you must have realised!

Discrepo  Peter Guest: sea breeze is only half the answer, the other is land breeze. Both are thermal winds
