Explicación: "Annualità" here is a bit of a false friend. It does not refer to the whole course year but to didactic modules pertaining to specific course years and lasting at least 50 hours
e.g. "Geography - 1st year" used to be an "annualità", whose exam you could take at any time during your studies. After passing all the exams/annualità included in a specific course, you could then prepare a final project work/ thesis and eventually obtain your final degree.
Unlike the UK system, in Italy you could not "pick & mix" your subjects. Each degree course had its set number of predefined modules.

I wasn't really clear in that past answer: what I meant is that if you take, say, three annual Physics classes during the whole of your course of study, you can count three "annualità". This system no longer current, I believe.
