Histological sections and impression smears (AMENT) of intestinal mucosa biopsies have been proved to be the most reliable method for detecting giardiasis.

Alternatively, scabs can be soaked overnight in sterile water or saline to sufficiently moisten them so that the undersurface of the scab can be used to make effective impression smears by firmly pressing this surface on to a microscope slide.
