I am translating what it looks a ledger too keep track of the monetary transactions. I am not sure what this stands for - but I suspect that it stands for ADDEBITAMENTO. If this is the case what would be the best translation? Dictionaries translate it simply as "debit", but in accounting it may actually be a charge that is credited, hence a credit. Does any body know?

James (Jim) Davis: 06:13 Jul 17, 2008: The context would help a lot. Without it all we can do is guess. Name of document. If it is a table, position of table in documents (e.g. notes to the accounts, assets section). Title of table if it is a table. Other items in table.
ela08: 06:43 Jul 17, 2008: More context - It is a table with columns reporting account numbers, dates and numbers. The last column is called "testo" and entries are giroconto, cessione, P.MA nota etc...

Unfortunately there is no other context. I was also given a reference file with addebbitamento translated as credit and that is why I was wondering... but I think that the reference may just be wrong as I see other mistakes. I suspect that "debit" is the best translation.

THANK YOU ALL!

Dare/Addetito/Addebitamento in a PRIMANOTA is the same thing.
Actually, in Double Entry Bookkeeping, you double entry Dare/Debit and Avere/Credit, that is , you debit an amount to an account and at the same time, credit to another one.

Coincido Pompeo Lattanzi: It should be short for "Addebitamento" hence probably "debit" or maybe better "charge an account", but as Jim says only some context would help.

Most likely - agree with Jim that more context would help

In view of the fact that this is a column heading I would use debits
