I am currently translating a brief for a large community centre and am struggling to find something that would capture "polarité urbaine" in this context. I was thinking about focal point but am not quite sure it is appropriate.

urban polarity
Explanation:
You give the context as "a brief for a large community centre", but then say in the Discussion section "It's an academic term, but general readers won't understand it." Briefs for community centres aren't intended for "general readers", but for professionals who understand concepts such as "urban polarity". Note that it is not just an "academic term", but one that is used by planners as well as academics.

Hence, two key elements emerge when studying the concept of urban polarity. The first is the dynamic relation that is established between polarities.

As KudoZ is for posting terms and not whole sentences, I have homed in on the term that you have identified as causing trouble. Obviously, the community centre would be only one (minor?) contributor to creating an urban polarity.

Thank you. I thought I had responded sooner but it looks like my answer was not saved!! I was worried "polarity" would be too literal but your excellent explanation showed me otherwise!! You were right, this is not aimed at the general public but at specialists (it was another poster who had made a comment about that, not me!). Thank you for your help.
