I understand 'arte plastica' to mean an 'expressive art'... although that dosen't really seem to fit as a standard "classification" to me... any ideas?

Explanation:
Spanish uses "artes plásticas" for what English simply calls "[visual] art" because unqualified "artes" in Spanish most often includes the performing arts. For example, in Spanish, "artista" usually refers to an entertainer/performer, whereas in English, "artist" usually suggests a painter/sculptor/etc. i.e a creator of visual art.
