Qualifications.
Degree: B.A. (Majors: English, German, Psychology with Hollands II).
Postgraduate Diplomas:
U.E.D. (University Education Diploma). Qualified to teach English, German, Afrikaans (at high school level).
Higher Translators' Diploma (English>Afrikaans and Afrikaans>English) of the then Department of Education, Arts and Science.
Membership of Professional Body. Was for many years a full member of the South African Institute of Translators and Interpreters (SAITINT) (which I allowed to lapse).
Have recently become a member of SATI.
Rapid Results Correspondence College. Translated and edited translations of lectures on a variety of subjects.
2 years.
Butterworths (South Africa) (Publishers of law books and university text books). Translated and edited translations (done by attorneys and advocates) for inclusion in a multi-volume encyclopaedic work entitled The South African Encyclopaedia of Forms and Precedents.
Later became one of two editors responsible for updating and annotating the Acts of Parliament for publication (in English and Afrikaans) in a 30+ volume loose-leaf major work. (Inter alia always responsible for translation of the index from English into Afrikaans.)
.NPA. Whilst at Butterworths did part-time translations for the Natal Provincial Administration (bye-laws of small municipalities) on a part-time basis.
Approx. 3 years. (Work-load eventually too much.)
SANLAM After 14 years at Butterworths moved to Cape Town where I translated full-time for Sanlam. Became second in charge of the Translation Department.
±2 years.
Left to return to Butterworths where I edited textbooks for 6 months and then once again became Managing Editor of the Statutes Department until 1990 when I resigned.
(Worked 23 years in total for Butterworths.)
