The review does not mention whether commands can be disabled. In other words, can you simply disable internet applications interaction and just start dictating where you place the mouse?

As you know, we are a translation forum, is Dragon Naturally Speaking 13 (Spanish/French/Italian/Portuguese) versions also available?

Is there a MAC version?

Without a bit more info, it reads like a sales pitch for Knowbrainer instead of a review.

From a command point of view, nothing has changed in v13 Jul 28, 2014

From a command point of view, nothing has changed, from Ver. 11 - Ver. 13. You cannot disable browser commands other than switching to Dictation Mode or holding down the {Shift} Key as you dictate. You can at least disable Twitter and Facebook commands via the DragonBar Options/Commands/More Commands button.

Nuance typically releases English only versions of Dragon during the 1st roll out. There has been no mention of other languages yet but because of a new US federal insider-trading law (I forget the exact name), Nuance doesn’t even give their own reseller channel a heads up on new releases. Spanish will be the 1st non-English language to be released but French, Italian and Portuguese may take a little longer. Portuguese and Italian will not be available in the US. Unfortunately, you will probably have to go through a UK reseller.

Dragon Dictate 4 is based on the Dragon Ver. 12 speech engine. There have been no announcements as to the release of Dragon Dictate 5 but you are probably looking at about 9 months and while out-of-the-box accuracy will be equivalent to Ver. 13, Dragon Dictate 5 will probably not be equivalent to the professional versions of Dragon. Last time we checked, there were only 2 developers on the Mac side. Nuance has 100 developers on the PC side.

As far as the KnowBrainer 2014 sales pitch is concerned, this review was written for the general public. We always create a new version of KnowBrainer to coincide with Dragon releases and while KnowBrainer ads serious command capabilities that rival the professional versions of NaturallySpeaking, it would probably have little value to this forum’s membership. We have to write our reviews to accommodate as much of the public as possible.

"NaturallySpeaking Ver. 13
(available from Nuance Certified Resellers,
including KnowBrainer Inc.)"

Tom, I find your post embarrassing. A retailer who sells a product cannot be a proper reviewer of the product. If you wish to announce a new product, please do so without trying to appropriate some supposedly impartial role.

I don't use NS, so I can't judge the review itself, but I find your criticism is a little exaggerated. They weren't trying to pass off as some independent industry/magazine reviewer, but clearly stated they are resellers of the product and support services - in fact, that's what they underscore. Isn't that obvious to everyone who reads the review? It's obviously a reseller's review - I don't see where they were claiming to be "impartial" or something other than what they are.

It's true that they could state at the top that this is a reseller's review to make it clearer. But it's a minor issue.

Thanks for the heads up on other languages and Dictate for Mac!

Come back and let us know when Ver. 13 Spanish/French/Italian are available please!

You should take our review with a grain of salt Jul 29, 2014

Phil,

You make a good point but I think it’s more of a matter of balancing perspectives. Keep in mind that our review is probably just the 1st of many. Most reviewers will have no financial incentive to recommend in favor or against Ver. 13 and that makes their recommendations unbiased but unfortunately, it also potentially limits their knowledge.

I read several reviews against upgrading from Ver. 11 to Ver. 12 but almost every one of our customers were glad they upgraded for numerous reasons including the ability to turn off a lot of the new “so-called” wonderful new Ver. 11 features. Just because you can do something with an application doesn’t mean you should. Most of the reviews we read, didn’t cover this information because they didn’t know it existed.

When we do a review, we don’t just cover the positive points. We also cover the cons. Our CEO, Lunis, has been using Dragon since 1993 when you could only dictate one word at a time. He started using NaturallySpeaking, as an outsource Dragon developer, in 1996, one year before it was released to the public. He is also the one who developed the 1st version of KnowBrainer because DragonSystems, now Nuance, refused to add command capability to the consumer versions of Dragon. You should certainly take my recommendations with a grain of salt but at the same time, you may find those other reviews to be somewhat limited in the ground to cover. That’s why their reviews are frequently less than 2 pages.

We also host the world’s largest speech recognition forum which receives up to 10 times more traffic than the official Nuance forum. You’ll find a lot of KnowBrainer endorsements all over the KnowBrainer Forum; including numerous Ver. 13 endorsements.

Also note that most reviewers only use Dragon for a week before publishing their review and the reviewers who use Dragon all the time, primarily only use it for dictation. We use Dragon Pro to run nearly every aspect of our company from sending and deleting emails (with a single command) to dialing phone numbers via a $20 USB modem. As a reseller, YES, take everything we say with a grain of salt but don’t forget that Dragon includes a 30 day customer satisfaction no restock fee guarantee (on opened/installed software). You are not exactly risking the farm.
