Office 365 and real-time previews Oct 8, 2015

Hi Steve,

As an Office 365 'Click-to-Run' user, I haven't been able to display real-time previews since Studio 2014.

Do you happen to know if SP1 will finally resolve this issue in Studio 2015? That would be greatly appreciated (although I'm aware of the CTRL-SHIFT-P workaround).

Many thanks.

You've made an incorrect assumption about the latest upgrade to Microsoft Office. For Office 365 subscribers, the move to Office 2016 is free, so it's not necessarily a case of only paying to upgrade once piece of software and not another. Secondly, in some cases, the upgrade to Office 2016 is forced. I had to reinstall my OS recently and when reinstalling Office, only 2016 was available. There is no longer an option to install an earlier version of Office or to revert back once the 2016 upgrade has taken place.
This means that the upgrade is not a choice for some people and believe me, many people aren't happy with Microsoft either for this situation.

Added to all this, I really don't like the argument of 'why pay to upgrade once piece of software and not another'? As freelancers, we have to make some very careful decisions around money. In an ideal world, we all want to upgrade our software as often as possible, but in reality we have to prioritize. While I agree that upgrading Trados should be a priority for most translators, we can't always do it immediately. We do it when we can afford it and no one should feel forced to do it, especially if you've only owned a particular version for a year or two.

... but it is not us who are forcing you to upgrade. We have to move the software on to the best of our ability to meet the needs of the majority of our users. If we had to spend time attempting to make older versions support features of the new ones then this would be a considerable cost to us as a business. The effect of this is that the upgrade in 2014 would probably not be free either. It's a long time since we charged for updates within the same version but having to do a major piece of work on it would very likely cause this to happen.

So in many ways I think the best solution is to include a maintenance contract as a necessary business expense and spread it out over the year. This way it's more easily digested and keeping up with the latest versions of all your software becomes an operational decision rather than a financial one.

How to go back to Office 2013 Oct 8, 2015

If someone wants to go back to Office 2013, there's only one way to do that: you must have your old installer. Ask friends, the installation file is not assigned to a specific person/computer, as it seems. Then you have to log in using your Microsoft account. A friend has just saved me. I WILL upgrade to Trados Studio 2015, but not right now. Having a one-person company, I have more urgent financial needs and upgrade to Freelance Plus is quite expensive. At least now I have time to prepare.

Hi Sam,

Its not Studio that causes the problems here- but indeed the Microsoft 365 (cloud) version.
-We do seem to get blamed a lot for circumstances out of our control
Microsoft are simply not providing the MSI installer with some versions-

http://kb.sdl.com/#tab:homeTab:crumb:7:artId:5013

As this topic of 365 (Cloud) version keeps popping up- I did some personal research yesterday on MS forums and it seems clear ONLY locally installed versions will ever have the MSI.
It appears (from the forums) this is because 365 etc. is subscription based and if you do not continue to pay then you lose the right to access the software/files etc.
If the MSI were to be available- then MS cannot control this.

As a professional translator I personally would want to ensure I have a full local (MSI) install at least on the main machine to ensure you retain full working capability

Unless the Office version you opt for is delivered with the MSI- there can only ever be a workaround it would seem.

Thanks for your prompt response, Steve.

I do appreciate that it must be frustrating when Trados gets the blame for everything short of war, flood and famine. The problem is that Studio 'interfaces' with so many different applications that it's often hard for users to know exactly where each problem lies and who can fix it.

I only asked because I saw the following note a few weeks ago, just below the table on your linked page: "The SDL Development team are aware of this problem and are working on a solution." That's why I thought it must be something relatively straightforward to resolve on SDL's side.

Anyway, you're absolutely right that it's better to have a full local install, even it means shelling out a bit more to Microsoft, which it inevitably will do.

Thanks again.

You're right and I'm sorry if my post sounded like it was accusing SDL specifically. It is not SDL forcing us to upgrade, but the situation. And in my case, and probably many others, it was pretty much out of our control, short of cancelling subscriptions to Office, etc.
My comment was more taking issue at the financial argument of why we should be looking to upgrade Trados asap to keep up with all other software. Comparing a free Office upgrade to shelling out over $800 for Trados is not a fair comparison. I'm well aware that for many the cost of upgrading Trados is significantly cheaper, but for those of us on older/different versions of Trados, the cheaper upgrade path is not available.

Incidentally, after a large outcry, MS has recently implemented the option to roll back to Office 2013. I have decided to do this to retain maximum compatibility with my version of Trados.

Office 365 version Oct 9, 2015

Rob, what Version of Office do you have? Because it seems that the downgrade option's availability depends on the version of your Office 365 subscription. My friend has some horribly expensive Enterprise version and he has got that option right from the start. I have Small Business Premium and I don't see the downgrade option or maybe I don't know where to look.

Due to a bit forced upgrade, I've got a large discount from Polish software provider and purchased Trados Studio 2015, but I'm waiting for SP1 before I will reinstall Office 2016. SDL is NOT guilty of everything, short of flood and war. Micro$oft is ;-P BTW, Trados Studio 2015 has many new cool functions, even though the colours are ugly - white, grey and.. more grey. Fifty shades of Trados hehe

So does this mean that if you purchase Office 2016 in the download version then the real-time preview will be supported?

It appears that CLOUD based versions will never have this option based on MS forums.

Although the 365 version is a seemingly cheap option you are not getting full functionality or the reliability of a full version or even any guarantees you can access 365 when you need to.
MS make it very clear that if they are unable to verify your license on a regular monthly basis- access will be stopped to the office environment and therefore to your saved files.

I would therefore strongly advise you always to opt for a locally installed version (not just for real time preview reasons) to ensure that you have full functionality.

Once we have thoroughly tested Office 2016 we will update our websites and KB accordingly.

Type in any language what's going on and that you want your Office 2013 back and they'll call you and send you an e-mail with a link to your appropriate language version. Just don't be surprised if they call from India at 11 p.m., as was in my case And just think that a bunch of trained monkeys in Polish MS support centre, after switching me from one department to another, finally decided that sending me the installation file to an older version of Office is Mission Impossible for them. Yes, Micro$oft is evil. But they can be also nice and helpful, if they call from India Hope that helps! Greetings from cold PolandCollapse
