Children and adults should be expected to make mistakes, win and lose at different stages of their lives, and get graded for it. Grading is one of several ways of measuring performance, whether in school, sports or professions.

I think children should learn to face loss, competition and failure in order to learn to develop healthy coping mechanisms. If a child is protected from the consequences of losing or failure, he or she will likely develop an unhealthy sense of entitlement, like life is unfair to him/her and that the world owes him/her something.
