My standard package is 5 windows to start with Sep 8, 2006

LEO (German-English dict), Proz glossary, Thesaurus.com, Wikipedia, Google window

And then from there I'm constantly opening up more windows.

3... and the others Sep 8, 2006

I also usually have 3 "basic" windows: proz, google and my ISP homepage.
Then I open new windows with each google search, my clients sites when they have reference material available online, etc. But when I have more than 7 windows open I close some of them because I find it difficult to manage!

Use tabs - one of the best things a browser can have.

Usually two: Multitran (a great Russian>English and >other languages online dictionary) and Google. Adding Proz.com makes it 3, but I close it sometimes.

You can use Mozilla Firefox, with tabs instead of windows, that keeps things simple.

I don't think I often have less than 10 tabs open.

Yahoo mail, Proz.com Web term search (which includes De>En Leo), two google windows and Wikipedia.

Plus usually Deja vu and Word; and Window Explorer at my music directory and Windows Media Player (listening to music while working)

I really need a faster computer.

Start with 6 tabs open in Mozilla Sep 8, 2006

I start with ProZ, Word Ref (SpanishEng), Merriam-Webster's Unabridged; M-W's SpanishEng Dict, Dicc. de la Real Academia Esp., and Wikiwords (which rapidly becomes the page I do Google searchs on). I'm so grateful to Mozilla!

I work offline and go on when I need a break (to Proz.com, of course). Then again, is that a break? I start getting involved in everyone else's translations.

The dial-up woes Sep 8, 2006

Same with me, Henry, but not by choice. DSL, cable, etc. not being available where I live, I'm stuck with a dial-up and cannot block the phone all the time. So I work offline, mark things that require online research, and then go online to work on several at once.

I hope, however, to get a second phone line installed soon that I can dedicate to Internet and fax. Then, I'll probably have 5+ windows (or tabs, if I submit to my computer guru's urgings and go to Firefox) open all the time.
