A combination of the above

Customer - PM - delivery date

I'm just soooo organized

I added the following:
After reading some of comments below, I thought I ought to add that this is how I name folders for each project. So, any typical folder might be named as follows:

ABC - Scarlett Johansson - February 31

Just wishful thinking.... ...

Client, sub-classified by deadline. On a separate piece of paper, I write jobs down by deadline and tick them off when done.

Client, then project number Feb 26, 2016

And I archive big clients by year.
Surprisingly, I've had a few clients who were unable to assign a project number! Then I have to use the date...

My work folders are structured by customer – product – year. On a separate table, I write jobs down by date, client, job reference, language pair, deadline, invoice number and tick them off with a red pen when done and with a green pen when invoiced.

I keep a spreadsheet and number each job as it comes in. Then there are columns for:

Client's name
Title or number of job
Date received
Due date (in red, which becomes black when the job is delivered)

I update it every time the information changes. The holes where information is missing become very obvious.

I can sort for any of these parameters if I want to.

Open = not invoiced yet, and Finished, by year. Keep It Simple, Stupid is the only principle I can cope with

I have ongoing jobs where I can find them and see them until they are invoiced.
Then I move them to the current year's 'Finished' folder.

I name each job folder carefully, so that I can recognise what it is, and then they sort themselves automatically in the year's folder.

I name each job folder carefully, so that I can recognise what it is, and then they sort themselves automatically in the year's folder.

That means I open the year's folder, (or last year's or whenever in the archive), and I can quickly scroll down to each client (agency). Their jobs are grouped by date and/or end-client. If I know what I am looking for, I can find it in seconds.

Far more importantly, I make sure I can keep track of my TMs for different clients and categories. I rarely go back to the original jobs, but I use the TMs over and over again.

Client and topic/department/final client for large clients/agencies Feb 26, 2016

For those who said year/client: do you mean you keep all your work indefinitely in your computer? How big is the capacity of your computer? I transfer it to an external drive at the end of each year. And it's year/client there, OK.

Year-Month-Agency-EndClient-Project (by date). This would work for me in finding the right files but I believe there is room for improvement when it comes to the number of clicks needed. Also I might need other document for invoice list (luckily most are automated by agency, though).
