Office in my home Apr 22, 2015

I have turned a bedroom into an office. It's lined with bookshelves on three walls and the closet is filled with supplies. A U-shaped desk sits in the middle.

Movement to promote translators' offices Apr 22, 2015

Although translators working in companies are a tiny minority compared to the thousands of independent contractors, I think it's time to get up and promote the translator's office: a place of quiet, interruption-free space with plenty of room for books and writing space. And a nap cot.

I've worked inside top-notch software companies and hospitals...and their offices stink to heaven. We translators don't need and don't like those bullpens or open office plans because they invite noise and interruptions, which are detrimental to producing excellent translation work.

Get out and tell others.

Home Office Apr 22, 2015

My office space is really just a corner of my open plan living room/kitchen setup. Next to the window

Deks in open space Apr 22, 2015

I rent a desk in an open office (which is usually quiet) an I love it. Interesting people and a clear separation of home and work.

Office in my home Apr 22, 2015

I used to have a very nice rented office outside of my home and that worked pretty well for some years. When my youngest daughter left the nest I decided it was time to move my office home...

But only figuratively these days.

I'm not the world's tidiest person so mixing home and office would be a recipe for disaster. I also like to work in complete silence.

So living in a farmhouse and working in an outbuilding is almost the perfect solution.

The cockerels can drive you crazy at times and it's not ideal tax-wise, but I love the 10-yard commute.

An office in my appartment Apr 22, 2015

I used to use an area of the living room, but after my daughter moved out I have converted her room into my office - and that's just perfect*!

I live in a studio, so my workplace is my room, my bedroom, and my kitchen at the same time. I like small, cosy places

Exactly what ... Apr 22, 2015

NeilMac said ... I have my office in the corner of my open plan living/kitchen/dining space.

My desk is faces a window from which I have a view of the mountains and is at a right angle to the other windows from which I have a view of the sea.

And I think I've answered this before ....

like Neil and Diane Apr 22, 2015

My office is the back of a large kitchen/dining area in my 3rd storey flat, next to the window,
from which I can see the driveway/parking area behind the house, and my white 1998 Subaru Legacy Outback, and neighboring properties.
I'm close to the stove and tea pot, which is essential. Can't translate without tea!

Room in home? Office in home? What's the difference? Apr 22, 2015

If you have an office in your home it will be in a room. If you work in a room in your home it will be fitted out for you to use as an office. Why these two "different" categories?

Wherever I am at the time Apr 22, 2015

So far since Monday:

At my desk in my office
At a colleague's desk - someone wanted a private meeting in my office
In the doctor's waiting room
On the table in my living room
In the armchair in my living room
On the sofa in my living room
On my bed
In the cafeteria in my mother's care home
In the armchair in my mother's room in her care home
In the car
On the train

None of these are infrequent for me.

So do I qualify to be termed a peripatetic translator?

I said 'room in home' because it is also my bedroom. It is not a dedicated office.
