Only with my main clients - to tell them I can't take any work until I get back.

If you mean connected to my e-mails and customers - no. I set autoreply. Vacation is time for me and my Family and I don't feel like sharing it with anyone else. We all work very hard and I feel we deserve a break.

Yes! Oct 17, 2014

I’m always connected. I don’t take long vacations any more: the last time I did that my children were still at home, meaning a long time ago. Nowadays, I tend to take a few long weekends throughout the year and an odd day here and there whenever I feel like it but I’m never too far away from my computer…

My thoughts exactly. I do not read work emails while on holiday. I let my main clients know in advance I will not be available and I set up an autoreply message on my emails.

My workload is all but regular so I happen to have unexpected days off while home doing nothing and to receive offers while travelling (which I do pretty often). So, I always take my laptop with me and try to arrange my holiday time also according to my clients needs. If there is something I've learnt from doing this: if you have a low period in your work, just book a flight and pack. You can be assured you're suddenly going to receive plenty of offers!

Yes, but... Oct 17, 2014

If I'm abroad, I turn off data roaming so I don't receive emails unless I have a WiFi connection. That means I'm not tempted to read anything while I'm out and about.

I'll also set up an out of office auto-response so anyone who emails me knows I'm away and can contact another translator if they need something urgently. My regular clients will already know I'm away. The auto-response lets me relax and not worry about getting back to people.

Vacations are for wimps Oct 17, 2014

I must admit I do check my email on holiday, just in case I finally land that dream job subtitling Scandi porno films

I love the opportunity to "move office" and mix work with experiencing new places. It keeps my creativity flowing and my brain young. However, I do once a year set aside a trip to be completely disconnected from anything that can remotely resemble computers and technology.

Vacations are just cleverly disguised opportunities to work Oct 17, 2014

My wife wanted to go to a Backstreet Boys concert in another state earlier this year. We had to rent a car (mine's falling apart, but I love it too much to sell it). The car rental guys learned about the growing Hispanic population in the area and how important it would be for them to start implementing multilingual material in their offices. The concert/Backstreet Boy folks learned about the dangers of MT (which they use to translate the Spanish parts of their website) and about one of my wife's projects, Copadacards.com, for new online/offline marketing resources. And finally, the zoo across the street received a full blast of my translation app, which was specifically designed for them. Gaby was singing, dancing and stealing guitar picks from Brian, while I was furiously typing on my cellphone, loading a live feed of their polar bear cam into my example site - http://www.projectartt.com/zoo_example_main.html.

I guess we all have different interests.

Yes Oct 17, 2014

Yes, because our profession is dying and we have to check if there's a potential project to do later at home.
