to reveal private information in the forum, but it might be interesting to see the statistical results across the poll group as a whole, to get an idea of how much people generally budget for it. I know that a lot of people do no formal CPD at all, whereas others always seem to be jetting off to conferences and the like.

I don't spend any money on formal CPD May 3, 2014

My work is my CPD. Besides that, I read books and articles in specialised areas. Over the years, I have attended a few conferences and webinars, but I must say that have been time and again disappointed as the information they provide could often be summarised onto one sheet of paper.

PS My annual spending on books and magazines is extremely variable: from a minimum of 400 €/year to...?

It varies May 3, 2014

In general, my work is my CPD.

This year, however, I will be attending the FIT-Congress in August. These EUR 300.00+ will be my only spendings for CPD in 2014.

nope, I just keep working; May 3, 2014

When I really feel that something might be useful or dubious, then I just find out free and available info or ask colleagues--no need to pay.

Thayenga, could you (both as a mentor and student) explain how and when your investment would pay off, if any? With some purpose or just in case?

TY

Shocking! May 3, 2014

I'm horrified that nearly 75% of respondents pay less than €200 a year on CPD! No wonder translators have such a low profile.... Even going to one conference costs at least €300, plus your travel and accommodation costs on top, but in my view is invariably money well spent! I've been to a number of ProZ and ITI events over the years and don't think I've ever come back empty-handed - be it contacts who have subsequently sent me work (or vice versa), tips on translation tools or just a new app... The social and networking side is invaluable too, especially in an isolated profession such as ours. I regard it as an investment in my business and absolutely essential if you're to grow and develop in what you do best. I've been translating professionally for over 30 years now, but that doesn't mean I ever stop learning....Collapse

On my current financial circumstances, available free time and necessity.

I think a distinction ought to made between 'passive" CPD such as researching content, reading books and self-teaching at home and 'active' CPD such as traveling to conferences, courses, etc. outside which involves a more substantial financial outlay.
Any 'professional' is so by virtue of the fact that he or she is constantly pushing him- or herself to grow and self-improve as an individual.

CPD is part of a professional's territory. After all, you never hear of CPD among navvies or construction workers, do you?

My thoughts exactly. I think I have only ever come across one useful webinar to date, a free one on Studio 2014 which I found very helpful in making a decision on whether to buy it or not (I did and I haven't been disappointed).

And you certainly won't find me at conferences. When/if I socialise, I prefer to meet people who do something different and not keep talking about the "translation industry" etc. It's good to leave that "bubble" occasionally.

Of course I strive to improve all the time, but I don't need any fancy acronyms for that. Since I don't draw a line between my "professional" and my private life, much of what I do privately influences my work in one way or another and vv.
