Hello
I answered other, because I started to translate some years ago, but I didn't buy any software. I tried some trial versions, just to see how CAT tools work, and only last week I decided to buy my translation software.

I was translating for several years before trying out any translation software at all other than CD dictionaries. After about 3 years translating like this, someone gave me an early version of Systran (which I still have and occasionally use).
As for TM tools, I eventually got into Wordfast Classic maybe 5 years ago and am still with it, although I only use its most basic functions (for example, I still haven't worked out how to make worthwhile use of the glossaries).
Caveat: I tend to use MT programs like Systran or Google simply to give myself a rest from typing and a change of pace or technique, rather than as a panacea. I now also use speech recognition SW for the same reason, although it sometimes struggles with my Glaswegian vowels

After many years, when they started existing! I still use some of them (or newer versions). At least one (CAT tool), I used just once and discarded - probably for good!

I use OmegaT. It's simple and it runs in combination with open office. I LOVE it.

For quite a while I managed with freeware such as OmegaT, Wordfast (less than 500 TUs). I also dabbled with Across. Then I started purchasing some software, first MetaTexis, then Wordfast Classic (before Pro existed), then Studio Starter and and finally I purchased Studio when it was on sale. Hopefully that will now cover all my needs for a good while to come!

well, sort of.
I was asked if I could buy it by one of my most reliable customer, which of course I did. After that, it had paid itself off with the increase in order and output within 2 months!!!
Never regreted it and am, although it is sometimes annoying, keeping up with the newest versions of the different CAT tools which is also proving to be an advantage.

I have translated from many years as part of my other work. But when I was made redundant, -the company went bankrupt-, I decided to become a fulltime translator and immediately saw the good things about CAT tools, I then purchased the ones I like most, TRADOS and WORDFAST. Since then, I have tried others, but I get on best with either of them.
My idea is that if your use technology you should buy it.

When they first came out - and as far as I can see they have only got worse! (trados specifically was wonderfully easy to handle in the early years!)

There was no "Buy it or else" option  so this is how I voted.
My main client said that they wre shifiting over entirely to Trados and strongly suggested that I do the same. So, I either bought it or I didn't. I decided to move with the blows and keep work coming in.

I started translating many years before they ever existed, just like Interlangue. I bought my first CAT tool many years after I started translating, when they became available and started being more useful.

I've checked out the products of some major CAT tool suppliers, using them occasionally now and then. Currently, I use Studio Starter. I am more inclined to use the full version of that one in the fall.

of freelancing, I bought Trados and later Wordfast. I use them mostly when the project requires them. I only use the basic functions and am not a certified Trados user.

I use Open Office (on one of my computers) as well and I like simplicity in almost everything so I am going to give it a try!

I will never buy a translation software. These softwares were developed by people who have absolutely no idea of what thanslating actually is.
