Hi. I know there are a lot of knowledgeable technical people here, IT specialists. I have a serious problem with typing on some sites using a US keyboard. Never on Proz or hardly ever but on some other sites, usually one, though. The letters do not match the keys I use, very often they get reversed, some silly auto predictions appear. I have been using Safari mostly. I use Apple computers, and their keyboards. Could someone help me to find a solution. Also, the spell checkers do not work or work... See more

Never on Proz or hardly ever but on some other sites, usually one, though. The letters do not match the keys I use, very often they get reversed, some silly auto predictions appear. I have been using Safari mostly. I use Apple computers, and their keyboards. Could someone help me to find a solution. Also, the spell checkers do not work or work partially, but this is less of a problem since I know the spelling of most words that I use. I type fast, so I thought the programs just could not follow at the same speed, and then I thought that the keyboards may not be compatible with some international sites. I am talking about typing in English. I am sure it will happen in other languages as well, but I hardly ever write anything in other languages, and especially type on the internet. I also thought it could have been a virus, but everything else works fine. Sometimes it gets better for a while, for a week or two, and then after some updates, especially, it gets much worse.

Set the correct keyboard Feb 12, 2016

Have you selected the correct keyboard in System Preferences?

Go to the Apple Menu -> System Preferences -> Keyboard -> Input sources and make sure you have selected the correct keyboard. i.e. the one you have actually plugged in to your computer.

I use an Apple Italian keyboard because I write in two languages (Italian and English) and this keyboard works for both. However if one of your two languages is Cyrillic, e.g. Russian and English, I imagine it's not so easy!<

Thank you. I usually type with the Feb 12, 2016

laptop keyboard. I have a regular US keyboard, although I have the Cyrillic system on it as well, but I hardly ever use it since I type slow using it , in Cyrillic. Could that be making it? It never happens when typing in Word, though—only on the internet.

…what is your keyboard layout/input method actually?

Using a wrong layout is a bad idea and this is exactly what may cause problems in certain circumstances (most common: spellcheck in programs sensitive to the input language). If you need several languages, you should better use respective layouts for them. BTW, it does not matter if you use only Latin-based or also Cyrillic/Greek etc. Just enable the required layouts and press Cmd + Space to switch.

How full is your hard drive? If you have less than 25% of free space, you *urgently* need to get rid of some stuff off your computer.

Yes, thank you. 20% left. Feb 12, 2016

It may be the insufficient memory that is causing that, then. The layout I have a regular US keyboard, I have to check everything again.

Minimal Feb 12, 2016

That's minimal - very risky. This will certainly make your computer go slowly. For a computer to do its work, it needs plenty of free space so that it can move things around temporarily and put them in new places. If it can't find enough free space, it will start slowing down. If you keep on saving more documents to your hard drive, this will reduce the free space even more and a point will come where the computer cannot do its work any more and the hard drive will crash.

I would suggest that you immediately remove as much stuff as possible from your hard drive, either by trashing it, and then emptying the trash to free up the space, or moving very large files that you might not need often to an external drive, CD, or memory stick.

If you have a lot of movies, videos, etc. I suggest you start with those. Don't remove any system files, of course. What about old downloads you'd forgotten about?

Here are a few tips:

and in general, any time you have any Mac problems, the Apple discussion forums can be very useful:

Drives (especially SSDs) do benefit from empty space but there are too many variables for blanket statements like "you need 25%". The OS, the specific model of the drive and various system settings and usage patterns play a role. SSD manufacturers also leave empty space on the drives by default (it's hidden from you so you can't fill it whatever you do). If you have a drive on which the manufacturer left more empty space, you need to leave less of your own. In any case, 25% is on the high side. 10-15% is commonly recommended but again, it varies. So, in 99% of scenarios, the 20% Lilian has is more than enough. Increasing spare area from 20% to 25% might bring some marginal improvement, in some scenarios, but I would bet a month's earnings that any improvement would be so small it would only be visible in benchmarking, not actual usage.
Also, the problem with not having enough free space is that it can slow down disk I/O operations (reading and writing files). Typing into a box in the browser is not an I/O operation, so it is extremely unlikely for having little empty space on your drive to have any effect on it.
Unsurprisingly, it has already been found out that the disk was not the problem, but I wanted to set the record straight on disk issues.
