試譯失敗經歷
初做自由翻譯，稿源不得不仰賴譯社。兩週來，我聯絡了數十家，或在其網站上註冊，或直接發郵件至其人事部郵箱，但只有四家安排試譯——內地兩家，美國一家，新加坡一家。上海和美國的兩家試譯結果已出，沒想到均為不合格。

上海的這家譯社是否肯請我我本不在乎，雖其網站設計考究，頗有專業之風，但試譯文字頗難而價格奇低。因其為首家給我安排試譯的譯社，加之我想了解自己水平，試譯之時我不敢有絲毫馬虎，細細查閱資料，百來英文字耗了足足兩小時有餘。信心滿滿交上去，沒想到被判為「差。不理解原文，譯文詞不達意」。好在考評人修改後的譯稿返還給了我。我一看，他把我譯文中一個雜技團（Gravity and Other Myths）的譯名「不信邪馬戲團」（注：現在想來應該譯成「不信邪雜技團」，畢竟馬戲團和雜技團還是有差別）改成了「萬有引力與其他神話」。顯然，這裡的「myths」非神話，而是「an idea or story that many people believe, but which is not true」，近於中文「迷信」一詞。其實不查字典，僅憑此雜技團的名字也可知這個myth不是神話，因為gravity非神話，而該名字暗示gravity也是myth。由此可知，myth亦非神話。文中提到該雜技團要表演「freefall」，看來他們認為萬有引力不過一myth罷了，扣上「不信邪」的帽子也不冤。
原文中還有幾句話當如何理解我和考評者分歧較大。限於譯者之職業規矩，我就不在此公佈了。
令我驚訝不解的是美國那家譯社也告知我我的譯文不合要求。其所出譯題為三小段平實淺易的文字，而且還是我拿手的文體。我左思右想實在想不出問題出在哪裡。可惜該譯社說公司規定，譯稿評後不得返還譯者本人，說是為省時間云云。
大家有何試譯經歷不妨也分享一下。如果還有好的經驗分享，那再好也沒有了。

我想很多老译员根本就不试译的。一来是评审的标准有待考究，二来是试译成功了了不一定保证有稿子。关于这个试译的问题，proz上已经讨论过千百遍了，建议你搜一下一论坛，自然你就找到答案了。：）

有时一个难的短语，你解出来了可是多数人的理解程度到不了那个水平，判分的人不懂，所以就会认为你是错的。

jyuan说得很对，不过从你提出来的实例还可以吸取另外一种教训：名称翻译往往跟普通语句翻译不同。你对这个名称的理解明显是正确的，但是因为名是直接称涉及到品牌和身份的，所以外语名称一般还是归自己来选取，杂技团未自定中文名，译者就没有权利为它创造中文名，而是用直译的方式来反映原名。

正如前邊一些同仁所說，不識貨而可操生殺大權的人多的是，不過，試譯還是歸試譯，不信邪是不得的，一切要從俗，拿下份Job才說，對myth一詞花了這麼筆墨去解釋，活躍在這論壇同行當然是非常信服，但對那些混飯吃的草包審批，實相等於對牛彈琴。祝你下次順利過關。

I agree with all the posters above. Also, the name of a company indeed has to be treated a little differently as Phil mentioned.
I agree with Kenny. When it comes to an acrobatic troupe, a name such as "Gravity & Other Myths" really has an implicit meaning of defying gravity and common myths. But how to handle it in a test does pose a dilemma. As Phil said, most of the time these people are just looking for a word-for-word correspondence.

支持试译精神！我也是这么过来的，其实每个人的职业成长过程不同，试译属于可行的方法之一。

莫過於這個“假皇家剧院”，假字當然無錯，錯在我中文水平低，以為萬有引力是假的，神話是假的，就連這個皇家劇院也是假的，其實這些迷思，用一個“在”字便可消除。替試譯者不值就是這樣的翻譯也可勝出，實無話可說。
